Wall Shear Stress Measurements Based on Ultrasound Vector Flow Imaging: Theoretical Studies and Clinical Examples.

Wall shear stress (WSS) is considered as a key factor for atherosclerosis development. Previous WSS research based on pulsed wave Doppler (PWD) showed limitations in complex flows. To improve accuracy for nonlaminar flow, a commercial ultrasound vector flow imaging (UVFI)-based WSS calculation is proposed. Errors for PWD are presented theoretically when flow is not laminar. Based on this, simulations of WSS calculations between PWD and UVFI were set up for different turbulent flows. Our simulations show that UVFI has obviously better performance than PWD in WSS calculations. Wall shear stress

The mechanistic effect of bromelain and papain on tenderization in jumbo squid (Dosidicus gigas) muscle.

Jumbo squid (Dosidicus gigas) muscle is rather hard and tough, which directly affects consumer acceptance. In this study, the tenderization effect of bromelain and papain on squid muscle during enzymolysis is examined and compared with an untreated control and water-treated sample. Squid mantle were incubated with different solutions (water, bromelain, and papain solution) for 40 min in a 30 °C water bath. Then, the mantle samples were subjected to water holding capacity (WHC) analysis, texture evaluation, biochemical determination, and histological observations. The results revealed that brom

Context-dependent function of ROS in the vascular endothelium: The role of the Notch pathway and shear stress.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) act as signal molecules in several biological processes whereas excessive, unregulated, ROS production contributes to the development of pathological conditions including endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis. The maintenance of a healthy endothelium depends on many factors and on their reciprocal interactions; in this framework, the Notch pathway and shear stress (SS) play two lead roles. Recently, evidence of a crosstalk between ROS, Notch, and SS, is emerging. The aim of this review is to describe the way ROS interact with the Notch pathway and SS protect

Process performance of parallel bioreactors for batch cultivation of Streptomyces tendae.

Batch cultivations of the nikkomycin Z producer Streptomyces tendae were performed in three different parallel bioreactor systems (milliliter-scale stirred-tank reactors, shake flasks and shaken microtiter plate) in comparison to a standard liter-scale stirred-tank reactor as reference. Similar dry cell weight concentrations were measured as function of process time in stirred-tank reactors and shake flasks, whereas only poor growth was observed in the shaken microtiter plate. In contrast, the nikkomycin Z production differed significantly between the stirred and shaken bioreactors. The measur

Altering mucus rheology to "solidify" human mucus at the nanoscale.

The ability of mucus to function as a protective barrier at mucosal surfaces rests on its viscous and elastic properties, which are not well understood at length scales relevant to pathogens and ultrafine environmental particles. Here we report that fresh, undiluted human cervicovaginal mucus (CVM) transitions from an impermeable elastic barrier to non-adhesive objects sized 1 microm and larger to a highly permeable viscoelastic liquid to non-adhesive objects smaller than 500 nm in diameter. Addition of a nonionic detergent, present in vaginal gels, lubricants and condoms, caused CVM to behave

Modified PMMA cements for a hydrolysis resistant metal-polymer interface in orthopaedic applications.

Amongst the many factors influencing the long-term stability of cemented hip prostheses, the interface between the implant and bone cement is considered to be one of the most susceptible to failure. Osteolysis and loosening of the implant can occur by the interaction of mechanically and/or hydrolytically induced bond failure of the metal-cement interface. In this work, an improvement of the hydrolysis resistance of the titanium-bone cement interface was obtained by cement modification with a bifunctional coupling agent combined with a tribochemical TiO2-modification of the metal surface. An exploratory study of loading and morphometric factors associated with specific failure modes in fatigue testing of lumbar motion segments.

BACKGROUND: There is currently little information regarding factors associated with specific modes of motion segment failure using a fatigue failure model. METHODS: Thirty-six human lumbar motion segments were fatigue tested using spinal compressive and shear loads that simulated lifting a 9 kg weight in three torso flexion angles (0 degrees, 22.5 degrees, and 45 degrees). Twenty-five segments failed via fatigue prior to the 10,000 cycle maximum. These specimens were visually inspected and dissected so that the mode(s) of failure could be determined. Failure modes included endplate fractures

Bead bed microfluidic device for testing mechanical embolization of shear-thinning hydrogels.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide, despite advancements in therapeutic strategies such as chemotherapeutics, immunotherapy, and transarterial chemoembolization (TACE). The development of embolic agents with enhanced delivery precision and therapeutic efficacy, particularly shear-thinning biomaterials (STBs), has opened new avenues for localized, sustained, and combination cancer therapies. However, current in vitro and ex vivo models for embolic agent testing are limited in their ability to recapitulate the intricate architectur

Spatiotemporal mapping of plantar shear forces during human walking using a flexible thin-film sensor.

During walking, the foot is subjected to complex vertical and shear ground reaction forces, which play critical roles in gait mechanics and the development of foot pathologies. However, plantar shear stress has been less investigated due to measurement difficulties. This study aimed (1) to evaluate the accuracy of a newly developed thin-film shear force distribution sensor in measuring plantar pressure and shear stress during walking, and (2) to characterize the spatiotemporal features of plantar shear loading throughout the stance phase. Five healthy male adults participated in walking experi

Effect of Er: YAG laser dentin pretreatment on composite bonding: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

This review aims to systematically evaluate the effect of Er: YAG laser dentin pretreatment on the shear bond strength (SBS) of composite resin, by comparing it with conventional mechanical caries removal and etch-and-rinse techniques. Two researchers independently searched in PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and EMBASE for literature (January 2020-December 2024), identifying 13 in vitro studies. A meta-analysis (95% confidence interval) was then conducted using RevMan 5.3. While Er: YAG laser showed comparable SBS to mechanical preparation (P = 0.05), it underperformed etch-and-rinse

Mussel-inspired robust and waterproof soybean protein adhesives enhanced with phenolated lignosulfonate for wood bonding.

Plant protein-based adhesives are favored for their cost-effectiveness and environmental friendliness. However, the low reactivity of plant protein and inherent water sensitivity of its adhesive significantly limits their scalability and broader application. Drawing inspiration from mussels, we developed a robust and waterproof bio-based adhesive reinforcing soybean protein (SP) with lignosulfonate. Specifically, the lignosulfonate was modified with phenol and epoxidated to synthesize phenolated lignin epoxy resin (PLEP), which was then added into SP matrix. The resulting adhesive demonstrated

Ligament shear strain stiffening arises from unaligned fibers and is amplified by axial strain.

The medial collateral ligament is subject to a combination of shear and tensile loading via passive joint rotation or a combination of joint rotation and valgus loading in the knee. However, empirical characterizations of ligament mechanics usually consider only pure tensile or simple shear loading, and such isolated loading conditions may not fully capture the structure-function relationships under physiological conditions. For example, stretch of off-axis ligament fibers may inherently enhance load transfer and shear resistance within the tissue. Our objectives were to characterize the effec

Influence of near-wall PIV data on recirculation hemodynamics in a patient-specific moderate stenosis: Experimental-numerical comparison.

BACKGROUND: Recirculation zones within the blood vessels are known to influence the initiation and progression of atherosclerotic lesions. Quantification of recirculation parameters with accuracy remains subjective due to uncertainties in measurement of velocity and derived wall shear stress (WSS). OBJECTIVE: The primary aim is to determine recirculation height and length from PIV experiments while validating with two different numerical methods: finite-element (FE) and -volume (FV). Secondary aim is to analyze how FE and FV compare within themselves. METHODS: PIV measurements were performed

High Frequency Components of Hemodynamic Shear Stress Profiles are a Major Determinant of Shear-Mediated Platelet Activation in Therapeutic Blood Recirculating Devices.

We systematically analyzed the relative contributions of frequency component elements of hemodynamic shear stress waveforms encountered in cardiovascular blood recirculating devices as to overall platelet activation over time. We demonstrated that high frequency oscillations are the major determinants for priming, triggering and yielding activated "prothrombotic behavior" for stimulated platelets, even if the imparted shear stress has low magnitude and brief exposure time. Conversely, the low frequency components of the stress signal, with limited oscillations over time, did not induce signifi

A biomechanical approach to distal radius fractures for the emergency radiologist.

Distal radius fractures are the most common upper extremity fracture and account for approximately one sixth of all fractures treated in US emergency departments. These fractures are associated with significant morbidity and have a major economic impact. Radiographic evaluation of distal radius fractures is frequently performed in the emergency department setting, has a profound impact on initial management, and is essential to assessing the quality and relative success of the initial reduction. While the most appropriate definitive management of distal radius fractures remains controversial,

The Effect of the Stress State, Testing Temperature, and Hardener Composition on the Strength of an AlMg5/Epoxy Metal-Polymer Joint.

The regularities of the effect of a complex stress state on the strength of an AlMg5/epoxy adhesive joint are experimentally studied at -50 and +23 °C in tension+shear and compression+shear tests with different normal-to-shear stress ratios. The tests use modified Arcan specimens and Brazil-nut-sandwich specimens, with the lateral faces of the adhesive layer having a shape of a mushroom-like "ridge" aimed at reducing stress concentration at the specimen edges. Evaluation of a 4-META adhesive cement.

This study investigated the shear bond strength of a new 4-META adhesive cement (C & B-Metabond) to dentin and Ni-Cr-Be alloy (Rexillium III). Fifteen human molar teeth had dentin bonding sites prepared by grinding away the enamel on a water-cooled abrasive wheel to a 600 grit. Fifteen metal alloy specimens were cast, ground to a 600 grit, and air abraded with 50 micron alumina. The 4-META cement was applied to the dentin and metal in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. After 24 hours in water at 37 degrees C, the shear bond strengths were recorded. The mean bond strength to denti

Effects of normal stress on shear properties and acoustic emission characteristics of bonded rock-concrete interfaces.

Direct laboratory shear tests, accompanied by acoustic emission (AE) monitoring, were performed to examine the influence of normal stress (ranging from 4 to 16 MPa) on the shear behavior and acoustic emission characteristics of bonded granite-concrete interfaces. The findings indicate that an increase in normal stress correlates linearly with enhancements in peak shear strength, residual strength and shear stiffness, while also facilitating a transition from ductile to brittle modes. Furthermore, elevated normal stress induced a 'double peak stress' phenomenon following softening, which intens

Unraveling the effects of surface functional groups and assembly orientations on the interfacial mechanics of MXene/Silk composites.

Interfacial regulation is the core and an urgent scientific issue for optimizing the performance of MXene-based biocomposites. This study uses all-atom molecular dynamics (AAMD) simulations to systematically investigate the coupling effects of Ti3C2Tx surface terminal groups (-O and -OH) and silk fibroin (SF) chain orientations (0°, 45°, and 90°) on the interfacial mechanical properties of MXene-based biocomposites. Equilibrium analysis demonstrates that the Ti3C2(OH)2 terminal groups construct the strongest hydrogen bond network, yielding the maximum interfacial binding energy. Shear simulati
