Development of sign phonology in Kata Kolok.

Much like early speech, early signing is characterised by modifications. Sign language phonology has been analysed on the feature level since the 1980s, yet acquisition studies predominately examine handshape, location, and movement. This study is the first to analyse the acquisition of phonology in the sign language of a Balinese village with a vibrant signing community and applies the same feature analysis to adult and child data. We analyse longitudinal data of four deaf children from the Kata Kolok Child Signing Corpus. The form comparison of child productions and adult targets yields thre

Fingerspelling as a pathway to deaf children's reading: a scoping review.

The role of fingerspelling or manual alphabet for reading among deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals has been of great interest in research. What can decades of research on fingerspelling and reading among deaf individuals tell us about how fingerspelling aids deaf children's reading development? This scoping review was, therefore, undertaken to explore: (a) What is the relationship between fingerspelling and reading?, (b) In what ways do fingerspelling abilities promote reading skills?, and (c) What is known about using fingerspelling to teach reading? We identified 26 studies that were scree

Recognition of Signed Expressions in an Experimental System Supporting Deaf Clients in the City Office.

The paper addresses the recognition of dynamic Polish Sign Language expressions in an experimental system supporting deaf people in an office when applying for an ID card. A method of processing a continuous stream of RGB-D data and a feature vector are proposed. The classification is carried out using the k-nearest neighbors algorithm with dynamic time warping, hidden Markov models, and bidirectional long short-term memory. The leave-one-subject-out protocol is used for the dataset containing 121 Polish Sign Language sentences performed five times by four deaf people. A data augmentation meth

The Comparison of the Morphological and Syntactic Awareness Skills of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students Regarding Agreement and Tense Categories that Exist in Verbs in Reading Activities with those of Students Without Hearing Disabilities.

The difficulties in learning skills that deaf and hard of hearing students encounter stem from morphology and syntactic morphology (morpho-syntax) and it is clear that there are limited studies related to these. In this study, it is aimed at examining hearing and deaf and hard of hearing students' morpho-syntactic actions which are compatible with the Turkish Sign Language and the awareness skills of these actions in the time categories. In total 122 students; 57 deaf and hard of hearing students from secondary and high school and 65 hearing students have participated this study. The data is g

Adapted cuing technique: facilitating sequential phoneme production.

ACT is a visual cuing technique designed to facilitate dyspraxic speech by highlighting the sequential production of phonemes. In using ACT, cues are presented in such a way as to suggest sequential, coarticulatory movement in an overall pattern of motion. While using ACT, the facilitator's hand moves forward and back along the side of her (or his) own face. Finger movements signal specific speech sounds in formations loosely based on the manual alphabet for the hearing impaired. The best movements suggest the flowing, interactive nature of coarticulated phonemes. The synergistic nature of spe

Conversational-Communicative Experience and Theory of Mind: A Study of Diverse Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children.

PURPOSE: Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children's language development and delays are well documented, yet less is known about their delays in theory of mind (ToM) development. Importantly, conversational-communicative experiences, language competence, and teacher/parent influences loom large. The present study examined ToM development and the potential factors underlying such delays in DHH children varying in the nature of their conversational-communicative experiences, particularly their hearing and signing experiences. METHOD: Three groups of 5- to 9-year-old DHH children were tested betw

Language Use and Identity in Minority Hungarian and Hungarian-Romanian Deaf Families.

This paper discusses language use and identity patterns in families set up by deaf partners living in Romania, where at least one of the spouses belongs to the ethnic Hungarian minority. Language use and transmission of identity to children in ethnically homogenous (Hungarian) or heterogeneous (Hungarian-Romanian) families of deaf are explored. The research is based on a survey conducted among members of the ethnic Hungarian Deaf community (including ethnic Romanian spouses), life-path interviews with selected deaf persons and interviews with special school educators. The research results deno

Concurrent Predictors of Supplementary Sign Use in School-Aged Children With Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

PURPOSE: Manual sign is a common alternative mode of communication taught to children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Gesture use is positively related to later increases in vocabulary and syntactic complexity in typical development, but there is little evidence supporting the use of manual sign for children with CAS. We sought to identify the communicative functions of signs and gestures produced by children with CAS and to identify concurrent factors suggesting which children are more likely to benefit from sign-supported speech intervention. METHOD: Measures of receptive and expres

The interaction of the visuo-spatial and the vestibular system depends on sensory experience in development.

In hearing individuals, vestibular and visuo-spatial functions seem to be functionally linked. Previous studies have suggested that congenitally deaf individuals are at a higher risk for vestibular problems, which in hearing adults have often been found to be associated with impairments in visuo-spatial processing. However, communicating in a sign language provides extensive practice in visuo-spatial processing, which might counteract negative effects of vestibular impairments. Here, we investigated whether the functional link between vestibular and visuo-spatial functions is mandatory, that i

Naming and categorization in young children: v. manual sign training.

Following pre-training with everyday objects, 8 children aged from 2 to 4 years learned to produce one manual sign (fists placed one above the other, in front of body) to one stimulus and an alternative manual sign (shoulders touched with ipsilateral hands) to the other stimulus, with each of three pairs of different arbitrary wooden shapes (Set 1). The six stimuli then were presented in category match-to-sample tests, which all subjects passed. Three of the children were next trained to produce the manual signs (denoted as fist/shoulder) for an additional six arbitrary stimuli, Set 2. All 3 c

Apraxia and aphasia for a visual-gestural language.

Since signed languages utilize visual-gestural channels, their study allows a unique opportunity for insight into the ways language and gesture may be represented in the brain. The separability of apraxia and aphasia for sign language was examined in four deaf signers who had unilateral brain damage, three to the left hemisphere and one to the right hemisphere. These patients were administered various tests for apraxia and a test of pantomime recognition. The patient with damage to the right hemisphere was not apraxic as we would expect. For the patients with damage to the left hemisphere, all

Functional demands and consequences of manual communication.

Sign language is the fourth most commonly used language in the United States. Despite the frequent need for this unique upper limb function, little is known regarding the demands and consequences of signing. This article (1) reviews 15 signers with upper limb abnormalities to determine how the abnormalities affect their signing, and (2) explores overuse syndromes in six sign language interpreters. Because of the way the sign language is constructed, only the most severe, bilateral limb abnormalities affect signing, and no extraordinary measures beyond standard, high quality hand care is requir

Narrative reconstruction in deaf and hearing children: A comparative study in the context of Arabic diglossia.

This study explores the narrative skills of deaf and hearing children within the context of Arabic diglossia, a linguistic environment characterised by significant differences between spoken dialects and formal written language. Using Stein and Glenn's (1979) and Bruner's (1991) frameworks, the research analyses the narrative constructions of 13 hearing and 13 deaf children in Kuwait. The findings reveal that hearing children, benefiting from consistent exposure to spoken and formal Arabic, produced more coherent and detailed narratives compared to deaf children. Hearing participants also demo

Use of pointing in parent-child interactions by hearing children of deaf and hearing parents: A follow-up from 1- to 3-years of age.

Pointing plays a significant role in communication and language development. However, in spoken languages pointing has been viewed as a non-verbal gesture, whereas in sign languages, pointing is regarded to represent a linguistic unit of language. This study compared the use of pointing between seven bilingual hearing children of deaf parents (Kids of Deaf Adults [KODAs]) interacting with their deaf parents and five hearing children interacting with their hearing parents. Data were collected in 6-month intervals from the age of 1;0 to 3;0. Pointing frequency among the deaf parents and KODAs wa

Auditory brainstem implantation in children with hearing loss: Effect on speech production.

Auditory brainstem implantation (ABI) is a recent technique in children's hearing restoration. Up till now the focus in the literature has mainly been the perceptual outcomes after implantation, whereas the effect of ABI on spoken language is still an almost unexplored area of research. This study presents a one-year follow-up of the volubility of two children with ABI. The volubility of signed and oral productions is investigated and oral productions are examined in more detail. Results show clear developmental trends in both children, indicating a beneficial effect of ABI on spoken language

The importance of morphemic awareness to reading achievement and the potential of signing morphemes to supporting reading development.

The ability to access and understand the meaning of multi-morphemic words is essential for age-appropriate literacy growth as well as for achievement in other participants, such as science and social studies, which are so print-dependent. This paper provides a theoretical basis for focusing on the morphology of English when teaching students who are deaf or hard of hearing to read through a review of the literature on the role of morphology in reading for both hearing students and those with a hearing loss. In addition, the authors review the empirical literature on Signing Exact English (SEE)

Language can shape the perception of oriented objects.

Seeing an object is a natural source for learning about the object's configuration. We show that language can also shape our knowledge about visual objects. We investigated sign language that enables deaf individuals to communicate through hand movements with as much expressive power as any other natural language. A few signs represent objects in a specific orientation. Sign-language users (signers) recognized visual objects faster when oriented as in the sign, and this match in orientation elicited specific brain responses in signers, as measured by event-related potentials (ERPs). Further an

A case of 'sign blindness' following left occipital damage in a deaf signer.

We report on a right-handed, deaf, life long signer who suffered a left posterior cerebral artery (PCA) stroke. The patient presented with right homonymous hemianopia, alexia and a severe sign comprehension deficit. Her production of sign language was, however, virtually normal. We suggest that her syndrome can be characterized as a case of 'sign blindness', a disconnection of the intact right hemisphere visual areas from intact left hemisphere language areas. This case provides strong evidence that the neural systems supporting sign language processing are predominantly in the left hemisphere

Inclusive Research Environments for Deaf and Hard of Hearing English Speakers.

In recent years, an increasing number of deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH) undergraduates have chosen to study in STEM fields and pursue careers in research. Yet, very little research has been undertaken on the barriers and inclusive experiences often faced by D/HH undergraduates who prefer to use spoken English in research settings, instead of American Sign Language (ASL). To identify barriers and inclusive strategies, we studied six English speaking D/HH undergraduate students working in research laboratories with their eight hearing mentors, and their three hearing peers sharing their experie
