Circadian rhythm of body temperature (CRT) is altered in endogenous depression and many psychiatric disorders. Even the sleep pattern is disrupted. Sleep deprivation alleviates symptoms in depression. The present study was conducted to find the role of noradrenergic innervation to the pineal gland in bringing about the effect of REM sleep deprivation (REMSD) on the CRT. Adult male Wistar rats (n = 12) divided into 2 groups were used for the study. The group I rats (n = 6) underwent superior cervical ganglionectomy and the group II rats (n = 6) were sham ganglionectomised. After recovery rats w

UNLABELLED: The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is related with the COVID-19 pandemic. Recent spike protein variations have had an effect on the transmission of the virus. In addition to ACE-2, spike proteins can employ DC-SIGN and its analogous receptor, DC-SIGNR, for host evasion. Spike variations in the DC-SIGN interaction region and role of DC-SIGN in immune evasion have not been well defined. To understand the spike protein variations and their binding mode, phylogenetic analysis of the complete GISAID (Global Initiative for Sharing Avian Influenza Data) data

PURPOSE: The prevalence of rapid eye movement obstructive sleep apnea (REM-OSA) varies among reports. It remains unclear whether or not patients with REM-OSA experience more severe daytime sleepiness and poorer sleep quality than those with sleep-stage-independent obstructive sleep apnea (IND-OSA). We investigated the prevalence of REM-OSA in a Korean population sample and determined whether or not REM-OSA was associated with poor sleep quality and daytime sleepiness.
METHOD: In this retrospective study. we defined "REM-OSA 1" as an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ≥ 5 and AHIREM/AHINREM ratio ≥ 2.

We investigated effects of NREM and REM predominant sleep periods on sleepiness and psychomotor performances measured with visual analog scales and the psychomotor vigilance task, respectively. After one week of stable sleep-wake rhythms, 18 healthy sleepers slept 3hours of early sleep and 3hours of late sleep, under polysomnographic control, spaced by two hours of sustained wakefulness between sleep periods in a within subjects split-night, sleep interruption protocol. Power spectra analysis was applied for sleep EEG recordings and sleep phase-relative power proportions were computed for six

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) is a prodromal neurodegenerative disease of misfolded alpha-synuclein (P-SYN) with a high risk of phenoconversion to a clinically apparent synucleinopathy (including Parkinson's disease, multiple system atrophy, or dementia with Lewy bodies) over 15 years.
OBJECTIVES: To determine rates of cutaneous P-SYN deposition in iRBD, to quantify changes in PSYN deposition over time, and to determine if P-SYN deposition patterns and amounts predict phenoconversion to a specific type of synucleinopathy.
CLINICAL TRIAL PROTOCOL: In

Rapid eye movement sleep (REMS) has historically been associated with anecdotal 'creative insights', possibly due to the fantastical and ostensibly illuminating nature of its associated phenomena (dreams). REMS, characterised by rapid eye movements, muscle atonia, and high-energy neuronal activity, has been linked to memory consolidation and information processing, particularly regarding the formation of novel associations or reintegration of consolidated memories into new cognitive networks. However, studies in these domains have largely used methodology which deprived subjects (animal or hum

Central sleep apnea (CSA) occurring predominantly during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep represents an unusual clinical phenomenon, as CSA typically occurs during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. We present the case of a 32-year-old male with severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), with an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) of 65.5/hr, who exhibited central apneas mainly during REM sleep (central apnea index: 35.9/hr in REM vs. 5.2/hr in NREM), along with concurrent alpha-delta sleep pattern during slow-wave sleep. The patient was taking tramadol 100 mg and pregabalin 300 mg daily for chronic back pa

OBJECTIVES: The pathogenesis of isolated rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorders (iRBD) is poorly understood. The severity of RBD may reflect its pathogenesis.
METHODS: We compared motor function and non-motor symptoms (NMSs) between iRBD patients and healthy volunteers. We correlated motor function, NMSs, and striatal dopaminergic activity with RBD severity using video-polysomnography.
RESULTS: Twenty-one iRBD patients and 17 controls participated. The Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale part III scores were higher in patients compared to controls (p < 0.001). There was no differen

Objective: To characterize electroencephalogram (EEG) power in different frequency bands during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Methods: Retrospective data on 151 patients were collected and divided into three groups: primary snoring group (AHI < 5/h), mild-moderate OSA group (6 ≤ AHI < 30/h), and severe OSA group (AHI ≥ 30/h). EEG recordings in the frontal, central, and occipital regions were extracted from both REM and NREM sleep, to compute the normalized spectral power densities in the delta, theta, alph

OBJECTIVES: REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), with its main clinical symptoms of nightmares with dream-enacting behavior, is considered as a possible precursor of neurodegenerative disease. Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is known to be capable of provoking RBD-like symptoms by apneic event related arousals. The two sleep related pathologies must coincide in a relevant number of individuals because of overlapping prevalence in similar age groups. Until now RBD symptoms coexisting with OSAS are rarely described in scientific literature and in fact considered as OSAS mimicking RBD.

Many patients with schizophrenia present with impaired cognitive functioning and sleep disturbances. Dissociated stages of sleep represent instability within distinct sleep regulatory cerebral networks. Previous studies found increased rates of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep abnormalities in patients with schizophrenia and a positive association with psychopathology. In this study, we examined if sleep stage dissociation and REM sleep instability was associated with neurocognitive functioning in a sample of medicated patients with schizophrenia. The analyses were performed on 31 baseline polys

OBJECTIVE: To validate a questionnaire focused on REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) in a community-based sample.
BACKGROUND: RBD is a parasomnia manifested by recurrent dream enactment behavior during REM sleep. While confirmation of RBD requires the presence of REM sleep without atonia on polysomnography (PSG), a screening measure for RBD validated in older adults would be desirable for clinical and research purposes.
METHODS: We had previously developed the Mayo Sleep Questionnaire (MSQ) to screen for the presence of RBD and other sleep disorders. We assessed the validity of the MSQ by com

OBJECTIVE: To validate a questionnaire focused on rapid eye movement sleep (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) among participants in an aging and dementia cohort.
BACKGROUND: RBD is a parasomnia that can develop in otherwise neurologically-normal adults as well as in those with a neurodegenerative disease. Confirmation of RBD requires polysomnography (PSG). A simple screening measure for RBD is desirable for clinical and research purposes.
METHODS: We had previously developed the Mayo Sleep Questionnaire (MSQ), a 16 item measure, to screen for the presence of RBD and other sleep disorders. W

The brain's capacity for information processing depends on precisely regulated energy dynamics. Yet how metabolic supply adapts to shifting computational demands across brain states remains unclear. Using wide-field fluorescence imaging through the intact skull of live mice, we simultaneously monitored brain blood volume (BBV), astrocytic pyruvate, and neuronal ATP levels during natural sleep. We found that large-scale metabolic dynamics are coupled to neuronal activity but reorganize in a state-dependent manner. During non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, theta-band electrocorticogram (ECoG)

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is thought to be a cortical state closer to wakefulness than non-REM sleep, yet a few brain regions regulate both states. This study identifies the glutamatergic neurons in the lateral periaqueductal gray (LPAG) that are specifically activated during wakefulness and REM sleep, as demonstrated by fiber photometry and optic tetrode recordings. Chemogenetic inhibition of LPAG vesicular glutamate transporter 2 (Vglut2) neurons reduced REM sleep and wakefulness while boosting non-REM sleep; their activation induced wakefulness, with high theta power and immobility. This study challenges the assumption that REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a marker of severe Parkinson's disease (PD) progression. Using two-sample Mendelian randomization, we found no causal link between PD progression and RBD. Interestingly, RBD exhibited a potential protective effect on motor and composite PD progression, warranting further investigation.
