Synchronous Epstein-Barr virus-associated skull base and adrenal smooth-muscle tumors in an 8-year-old girl with recent Epstein-Barr virus infection.

Epstein-Barr virus-associated smooth-muscle tumors are rare tumors seen in immunocompromised patients. Most cases occur in the context of AIDS and organ transplantation, and very rarely in the setting of congenital immunodeficiency, with only 5 case reports of the latter published so far in the literature. The authors report the case of a previously healthy 8-year-old girl with headaches and precocious puberty who was found to have a large skull base lesion. There was a synchronous left adrenal lesion. She underwent resection of the skull base lesion and a left adrenalectomy. Thorough evaluati

Comparison of the diagnostic accuracy of contrast-enhanced MRI and diffusion-weighted MRI in the differentiation between uterine leiomyosarcoma / smooth muscle tumor with uncertain malignant potential and benign leiomyoma.

PURPOSE: To compare the diagnostic accuracy of contrast-enhanced (CE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) in the differentiation between uterine leiomyosarcoma (LMS) / smooth muscle tumor with uncertain malignant potential (STUMP) and benign leiomyoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A consecutive cohort of 8 LMS/STUMP and 25 benign leiomyomas underwent pelvic MRI exam at 3T. Two radiologists independently evaluated images based on CE-MRI (central nonenhancement at equilibrial phase) and DWI (hyperintensity on b = 1000 s/mm2 and hypointensity on apparent diffusion coeffic

Benign female genital tract smooth muscle tumors with adipocytic differentiation: A morphologic, immunohistochemical and MDM2 fluorescence in situ hybridization study of 44 conventional lipoleiomyomas and lipoleiomyoma variants.

Leiomyomas with adipocytic differentiation typically occur in the uterus although they may arise at several sites in the female genital tract. While these are most commonly spindled leiomyomas with a component of adipocytic tissue ("conventional lipoleiomyomas"), there is a relatively ill-defined assortment of leiomyoma variants with adipocytic differentiation. We performed a morphologic, immunohistochemical and MDM2 gene amplification analysis of a large series of gynecologic leiomyomas with adipocytic differentiation to better define the clinicopathologic spectrum. Forty four tumors from 44

Latent Epstein-Barr virus infection demonstrated in low-grade leiomyosarcomas of adults with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, but not in adjacent Kaposi's lesion or smooth muscle tumors in immunocompetent patients.

BACKGROUND: Incidence of smooth muscle tumors is increased in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection and organ transplant recipients. Smooth muscle tumors in immunocompromised patients often occur in unusual locations and exhibit evidence of latent infection by clonal, presumably tumorigenic, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). OBJECTIVE: To investigate the presence of EBV latent infection in smooth muscle tumors in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and in immunocompetent patients. DESIGN: Twenty-two extrauterine, extraintestinal smooth muscle and myofibroblastic tumors we

FTIR Microspectroscopy as a new probe to study human uterine lesions: Characterization of tumor cell lines from uterine smooth muscle cells and evaluation of EPA and DHA in vitro treatments.

During their life, women are likely to develop uterine diseases, which often compromise their fertile and perimenopausal age. Besides benign lesions like leiomyomas, several malignant neoplasms can occur, such as the uterine leiomyosarcoma, which represents the most frequent malignancy among the rarest uterine cancers. It presents several variants similar to both benign and malignant neoplasms, and sometimes it shares symptoms with the benign counterpart. In this scenario, for a correct diagnosis and a successful prognosis, it is mandatory to detect new reliable markers which strengthen histop

Concurrent Epstein Barr virus-associated smooth muscle tumor and myeloid sarcoma of the liver and acute myeloid leukemia in a patient post kidney transplant: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Epstein Barr virus-associated smooth muscle tumors (EBV-SMT) are rare neoplasms that can occur in immunocompromised individuals. The native or transplanted liver is the most commonly involved site in post transplant patients. Systemic therapies have been utilized in EBV-SMT with modest activity. CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe a 23-year-old female kidney transplant recipient who presented with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and hepatic myeloid sarcoma (MS). Although it was not recognized initially, her liver biopsy revealing MS at diagnosis was posthumously found to have synchronous E

Epstein-Barr virus-associated adrenal smooth muscle tumors and disseminated diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in a child with common variable immunodeficiency: a case report and review of the literature.

This article reports the clinical and the histological features in a 7-year-old girl affected by common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) who developed multiple Epstein-Barr virus-associated tumors, represented by bilateral adrenal smooth muscle tumors (EBV-SMT) and multifocal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. The EBV-SMTs showed features compatible with a benign or at least a low-malignant potential neoplasm. A peculiar feature observed in both EBV-SMTs was the occurrence of numerous lymphocytes intermingled with the spindle cells, which consisted of CD3+ CD5+ T-cells, with a predominant cytotoxi

Tumor Necrosis Factor-α-Induced Protein-8-like 2 Transfected Adipose-Derived Stem Cells Regulated the Dysfunction of Monocrotaline Pyrrole-Induced Pulmonary Arterial Smooth Muscle Cells and Pulmonary Arterial Endothelial Cells.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is characterized by pulmonary arterial endothelial cell (PAEC) dysfunction and pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cell (PASMC) activation. For decades, the therapies for PAH based on stem cells have been shown to be effective. Meanwhile, tumor necrosis factor-α-induced protein-8-like 2 (TIPE2) promote the viability of human amniotic mesenchymal stem cells. Therefore, we aimed to explore the role of TIPE2 in adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) and the function of TIPE2-transfected ADSCs in the regulation of PAH. We first explored the role and underlying molecu

Transcriptional Suppression of CPI-17 Gene Expression in Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells by Tumor Necrosis Factor, Krüppel-Like Factor 4, and Sp1 Is Associated with Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Vascular Hypocontractility, Hypotension, and Mortality.

Vasodilatory shock in sepsis is caused by the failure of the vasculature to respond to vasopressors, which results in hypotension, multiorgan failure, and ultimately patient death. Recently, it was reported that CPI-17, a key player in the regulation of smooth muscle contraction, was downregulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in mesenteric arteries concordant with vascular hypocontractilty. While Sp1 has been shown to activate CPI-17 transcription, it is unknown whether Sp1 is involved in LPS-induced smooth muscle CPI-17 downregulation. Here we report that tumor necrosis factor (TNF) was critic

Inflammatory leiomyosarcoma shows frequent co-expression of smooth and skeletal muscle markers supporting a primitive myogenic phenotype: a report of 9 cases with a proposal for reclassification as low-grade inflammatory myogenic tumor.

Inflammatory leiomyosarcoma (ILMS) is a very rare soft tissue tumor that usually follows an indolent clinical course, but long-term follow-up studies are lacking. Recent publications primarily focused on its genetic profile characterized by a near haploid genome. One study also showed these tumors to have upregulation of genes known to be crucial for skeletal muscle differentiation. Nevertheless, immunohistochemical expression of skeletal muscle markers, as well as markers that would help to distinguish ILMS from a long list of relevant differential diagnostic entities, has not been extensivel

Interleukin-4 and 13 induce the expression and release of monocyte chemoattractant protein 1, interleukin-6 and stem cell factor from human detrusor smooth muscle cells: synergy with interleukin-1beta and tumor necrosis factor-alpha.

PURPOSE: Interstitial cystitis is characterized by an increased number of activated MCs in the detrusor muscle. However, to our knowledge the factors that influence the anatomical relationship between MCs and HDSMCs are unknown. MCP-1, IL-6 and SCF have a critical role in the regulation of MC development, signaling and function. We investigated whether HDSMCs are capable of expressing and releasing MCP-1, IL-6 and SCF in response to IL-4, IL-13, IL-1beta and tumor necrosis factor-alpha. MATERIALS AND METHODS: HDSMCs were isolated and cultured using an explant technique. Protein expression, an

Prospective Detection of Germline Mutation of Fumarate Hydratase in Women With Uterine Smooth Muscle Tumors Using Pathology-based Screening to Trigger Genetic Counseling for Hereditary Leiomyomatosis Renal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome: A 5-Year Single Institutional Experience.

Pathology-based screening of uterine smooth muscle tumors (uSMT) for morphology suggestive of fumarate hydratase deficiency (FH-d morphology) has been proposed as a method to identify women at increased risk for hereditary leiomyomatosis renal cell carcinoma (HLRCC) syndrome. For 5 years our clinical diagnostic practice has evaluated all women with any type of uSMT for FH-d morphology (defined, at low magnification, as staghorn shaped blood vessels and alveolar pattern edema and, at high magnification, as tumor macronucleoli surrounded by a halo and cytoplasmic eosinophilic globules) and, when

Large lipoleiomyoma of the uterine body.

Large or giant lipoleiomyoma of the uterine corpus is a rare condition. A 70-year-old Japanese woman consulted our hospital because of a pelvic mass and abnormal uterine bleeding. Physical examination showed a mass in the pelvis. Blood laboratory test showed anemia and leukocytosis. Cholesterol, triglyceride, glucose, and hemoglobin A1c were normal. Tumor markers (CEA, CA19-9, CA125, SCC, and CA72-4) were normal. Imaging modalities including ultrasound and computed tomography revealed a characteristic large (8 × 8 × 9 cm) tumor in the posterior aspect of the uterine body. The tumor was charact

Actin expression in neural crest cell-derived tumors including schwannomas, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors, neurofibromas and melanocytic tumors.

Tumors that originate from neural crest-derived cells represent a heterogeneous group of neoplasms including benign and malignant tumors with melanocytic and schwannian differentiation. The immunophenotype of these tumors is well known but little is known about the expression of smooth muscle/myofibroblastic markers in these tumors. A total of 590 neural crest-derived tumors (50 benign schwannomas, five malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors, 80 neurofibromas, 240 nevocytic nevi, 115 primary melanomas, and 100 melanoma metastases) were studied with respect to alpha-smooth muscle actin and mu

Smoothelin is a specific marker for smooth muscle neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract.

Smoothelin is a smooth muscle-specific cytoskeletal protein exclusively found in differentiated smooth muscle cells. This contrasts with other smooth muscle proteins (eg, h-caldesmon, alpha-smooth muscle actin, desmin, smooth muscle myosin), which are expressed in proliferative (early) stages of smooth muscle development and occasionally in other cell types (striated muscle, myofibroblasts, myoepithelial cells, pericytes). Smoothelin has been shown to be expressed predominantly in visceral smooth muscle and to a lesser extent in vascular smooth muscle. Smoothelin expression in mesenchymal tumo

Low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma with intracardiac extension. Evolution of extensive smooth muscle differentiation and usefulness of immunohistochemistry for its recognition and distinction from intravenous leiomyomatosis.

This case, a rare example of low-grade endometrial stroma sarcoma with extensive smooth muscle differentiation which extended to the inferior vena cava and cardiac chambers closely resembling intravenous leiomyomatosis grossly and microscopically, illustrates the importance of extensive sectioning and the usefulness of immunohistochemistry. Although spindle cell components arranged in interlacing bundles consistent with smooth muscle differentiation were recognizable in the primary tumor (on retrospective review), extensive smooth muscle differentiation in the recurrent tumors masked prototypi

Successful transoral videolaryngoscopic surgery for leiomyoma in the base of the tongue.

Leiomyomas are benign tumors with smooth muscle differentiation that occur most frequently in the uterine myometrium. They are uncommon in the head and neck region. We report a rare case of tongue base leiomyoma successfully resected with transoral endoscopic surgery. A 14-year-old male was found to have a tongue base tumor. The tumor located in the right tongue base. It had a smooth surface and no deep invasion. The tumor was resected with transoral videolaryngoscopic surgery. There were no serious adverse events requiring further intervention. Histologically, the tumor was composed of densel

Ultrastructural study of glomus tumor.

The fine structure of five cases of glomus tumor was described. All of the cases showed a solid type, and the glomus cells were shown to be typical or modified smooth muscle cells. The authors' conclusion is that the glomus cells were not derived from pericytes, but from smooth muscle cells of vascular part of the glomus, and are thought to be a specialized smooth muscle cell tumor.

Cotyledonoid dissecting leiomyoma of the uterus: a case report of a benign uterine tumor with sarcomalike gross appearance and review of literature.

Cotyledonoid dissecting leiomyoma (Sternberg tumor) is a very rare variant of uterine smooth muscle tumor with an unusual and alarming gross appearance. Including our case, approximately 20 cases were reported in the literature. A 27-year-old woman presented with pelvic mass. A 41-cm fungating rubbery mass with placenta-like appearance adhering to the posterior uterine surface and extending to the left broad ligament and pelvic cavity was observed. An intraoperative frozen section was requested, and a diagnosis of a benign smooth muscle tumor was given. Total abdominal hysterectomy and bilater

Nodular smooth muscle metaplasia in multiple peritoneal endometriosis.

We report here an unusual presentation of peritoneal endometriosis with smooth muscle metaplasia as multiple protruding masses on the lateral pelvic wall. Smooth muscle metaplasia is a common finding in rectovaginal endometriosis, whereas in peritoneal endometriosis, smooth muscle metaplasia is uncommon and its nodular presentation on the pelvic wall is even rarer. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of nodular smooth muscle metaplasia occurring in peritoneal endometriosis. As observed in this case, when performing laparoscopic surgery in order to excise malignant tumors of in
