The present study is an initial examination of the extent to which the environmental characteristics of bars and social behaviors that women engage in when drinking in this setting are associated with bar-related aggression. As expected, several environmental characteristics (e.g., young patrons, pool playing) and social behaviors (e.g., alcohol consumption, leaving the bar with strangers) were associated with more severe bar-related aggression experienced by women during the past year. These results shed light on the significant problem of bar-related aggression against women and can potentia

The present study utilized an empirically derived coding system to identify content categories in the spontaneous verbalizations of social phobics in the context of a short-term cognitive-behavioral group therapy. The coding system was applied successfully to segments of transcriptions of eleven group sessions. Evaluation of changes in the content categories utilized by two subjects over the course of the life of the group indicates the usefulness of this coding system in identifying meaningful shifts in cognitive processes during treatment.

This study examined parenting styles, Type A behavior in parents and children, and social competence in children. Fifty 1st-6th grade children, parents, and their teachers participated. Type A behavior in parents was associated with a controlling style of parenting, but not with pressuring the child to achieve. Parenting styles of achievement pressure and high control were related to impatient and aggressive behaviors in children, as measured by the MYTH, a teacher-scored Type A behavior instrument. In addition, impatience and aggressiveness in the children were negatively correlated with the

Various approaches exist to quantify the aging process and estimate biological age on an individual level. Frailty indices based on an age-related accumulation of physical deficits have been developed for human use and translated into mouse models. However, declines observed in aging are not limited to physical functioning but also involve social capabilities. The concept of "social frailty" has been recently introduced into human literature, but no index of social frailty exists for laboratory mice yet. To fill this gap, we developed a mouse Social Frailty Index (mSFI) consisting of seven dis

Social experiences are an integral part of normative development for youth and social functioning difficulties are related to poor outcomes. Youth with anxiety disorders, and particularly social anxiety disorder, experience difficulties across many aspects of social functioning that may place them at risk for maladjustment. The goal of this paper was to compare social experiences of youth across anxiety diagnoses and examine whether treatment is helpful in improving social functioning. Ninety-two children (age 7-12 years; 58% male; 87.0% White) with a primary diagnosis of generalized anxiety d

OBJECTIVE: There is growing interest in the role of transdiagnostic processes in the onset, maintenance, and treatment of mental disorders (Nolen-Hoeksema & Watkins, 2011). Two such transdiagnostic processes-rumination and reappraisal-are the focus of the present study. The main objective was to examine the roles of rumination (thought to be harmful) and reappraisal (thought to be helpful) in adults with social anxiety disorder (SAD).
METHOD: We conducted a randomized controlled trial of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with 75 adults with SAD and examined pre- to post-CBT changes as well a

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are cell-derived small membrane vesicles and circulate throughout the body, but the impact of circulating EVs on brain function and behavior remains elusive. Here, we report that wild-type (WT) mouse blood, particularly EVs, increases sociability in socially impaired immunodeficient Rag1-/- male mice, mimicking the effects of WT T cell transfer. These EVs are localized to neurons and regulate PKCε expression, GABAA receptor synaptic localization, and inhibitory postsynaptic signaling in prefrontal cortex (PFC) pyramidal neurons. Injection of Rag1-/- EVs supplemente

The ability to detect and respond to threat signals in the environment, including those conveyed by the distress of a familiar social partner, is fundamental to survival and disrupted in a range of neuropsychiatric conditions. This study identifies oxytocin receptor (Oxtr)-expressing neurons within the lateral parabrachial nucleus (lPBN) of mice as a key node in the neural circuitry underlying threat-related and social behaviors. These Oxtr neurons are activated by aversive stimuli and by observing demonstrator mice in stressful situations, including foot shock or inflammatory pain. Chemogenet

PTCHD1 is an X-linked three-exon gene associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and/or intellectual disability (ID). Mice lacking Ptchd1 exon 2 (Ptchd1Δexon2) exhibit hyperactivity and learning impairments, but do not recapitulate ASD-like traits. Through mapping of clinically reported loss-of-function mutations in human patients, we determined that PTCHD1 exon 3 is a high-risk locus. We therefore generated an alternative Ptchd1 knockout mouse model by targeting Ptchd1 exon 3 (Ptchd1Δexon3) using CRISPR/Cas9. Our analyses revealed that two major PTCHD1/Ptchd1 transcripts-a (full-length) a

OBJECTIVE: Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), the causative agent of tuberculosis (TB), is spread through the air. Although extensive data has shown that TB case notifications decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic, there is little known about the extent to which these reductions were due to a decrease in transmission, rather than delays in healthcare seeking and diagnosis. We used data from CONTEXT, a population-based cross-sectional study which enrolled newly diagnosed cases of extensively drug-resistant (XDR) or pre-extensively drug resistant (pre-XDR) TB in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa from

Neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders such as autism and schizophrenia are devastating brain illnesses that are often associated with deficits in social behaviors. Thus, understanding the molecular mechanisms contributing to the etiology underlying these social defects will be critical in developing therapeutic strategies for these disorders. Here, we have identified a crucial role of carboxyl-terminus (C-tail) of Neuroligin 2 (NL2), a cell adhesion molecule highly enriched at inhibitory synapses, in social behaviors. Indeed, we have found that genetic deletion of NL2 C-tail in mic

Social behaviors are essential for both reproduction and survival. Human and animals exhibit distinct patterns of social interaction following trauma experienced during puberty, which are shaped by the complex interplay between environmental and biological factors. Although neuropeptides and early life stress (ELS) influence social behavior, it remains unclear whether the regulation of neuropeptides in response to ELS further modulates social behavior. Two sex neuropeptides, oxytocin (OT) and arginine vasopressin (AVP), exert profound effects on social behaviors. Therefore, we investigate the

It is imperative to acknowledge the potential impact of various environmental factors on the development of developmental disorders. Among these factors, the maternal immune response induced by the onset of infectious diseases during pregnancy emerges as a notable consideration. The study elucidates the behavioral and morphological abnormalities of the cerebral cortex caused by maternal immune response during pregnancy, emphasizing the significance of maternal immunity in this context. To this end, a mouse model of prenatal infection was established, inducing a congenital immune response analo

Stress is the body's physiological reaction to a dangerous or threatening situation, leading to a state of alertness. This reaction is necessary for developing an effective adaptive response to stress and maintaining the body's homeostasis. Chronic stress, caused mainly by social stress, is what primarily affects the world's population. In the last decades, the emergence of psychological disorders in humans has become more frequent, and one of the symptoms that can be observed is aggressiveness. In the brain, stress can cause neuronal circuit alterations related to the action of hormones in th

Abnormal accumulation of insoluble α-synuclein (α-Syn) inclusions in neurons, neurites, and glial cells is the defining neuropathology of synucleinopathies, including Parkinson's disease (PD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and multiple system atrophy. Accumulation of α-Syn inclusions in the amygdala has been well-documented in post-mortem studies of PD and DLB brains, as well as preclinical animal models of these conditions. Though α-Syn pathology is closely associated with neurodegeneration, there is a poor correlation between neuronal loss in the amygdala and the clinical features of PD a

Individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) experience overall emotion regulation difficulties, but less is known about the long-term role of such difficulties in cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for SAD. Forty-six patients with SAD receiving internet-delivered CBT, and matched healthy controls (HCs; n = 39), self-reported the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS-SR), and participated in anticipatory speech anxiety behavioral experiments. Patients were measured at seven time points before, during and after CBT over a total period of 28 months

While our understanding of long-term disability after traumatic brain injury (TBI) has habitually focused on cognitive and sensorimotor functioning, it is increasingly appreciated that changes in social function for survivors of a brain injury are common and have a profound impact on one's quality of life. In this chapter, we highlight the consequences of TBI on social behavior, taking into account evidence from studies of patient populations as well as from preclinical animal models. After first considering the protracted nature of the development of social behavior across the lifespan, inclu

Social isolation has been linked to a range of psychiatric issues, but the behavioral component that drives it is not well understood. Here, a genome-wide associations study (GWAS) was carried out to identify genetic variants that contribute specifically to social isolation behavior (SIB) in up to 449,609 participants from the UK Biobank. 17 loci were identified at genome-wide significance, contributing to a 4% SNP-based heritability estimate. Using the SIB GWAS, polygenic risk scores (PRS) were derived in ALSPAC, an independent, developmental cohort, and used to test for association with self

Maternal stress during pregnancy is prevalent and associated with increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in the offspring. Maternal and offspring immune dysfunction has been implicated as a potential mechanism by which prenatal stress shapes offspring neurodevelopment; however, the impact of prenatal stress on the developing immune system has yet to be elucidated. Furthermore, there is evidence that the chemokine C-C motif chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2) plays a key role in mediating the behavioral sequelae of prenatal stress. Here, we use an established model of prenatal restraint stress in
