Trajectories of parental neglect in multicultural families: A social determinants of health approach to heterogeneous developmental pathways from childhood to adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Parental neglect is the most prevalent form of child maltreatment in South Korea, and children in multicultural families are disproportionately exposed. Social determinants of health offer a useful lens for understanding heterogeneous neglect pathways, yet longitudinal evidence is limited. OBJECTIVE: To identify distinct longitudinal trajectories of child-reported parental neglect in Korean multicultural families and to examine how baseline social determinants differentiate class membership. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Data came from a nationally representative panel of 2186 fourth

"Social Anxiety Disorder Carved at its Joints": evidence for the taxonicity of social anxiety disorder.

Previous findings suggest that social anxiety disorder may be best characterized as having a dimensional latent structure (Kollman et al., 2006; Weeks et al., 2009). We attempted to extend previous taxometric investigations of social anxiety by examining the latent structure of social anxiety disorder symptoms in a large sample comprised of social anxiety disorder patients (i.e., putative taxon members) and community residents/undergraduate respondents (i.e., putative complement class members). MAXEIG and MAMBAC were performed with indicator sets drawn from a self-report measure of social anxi

Socioeconomic differences in cancer survival: a review of the evidence.

In the discussion of social inequalities in health there has been much debate on the role of medical care. Large differences in cancer incidence and mortality from cancer have been consistently observed. To understand the potential importance of socioeconomic differences in prompt detection and treatment of cancer it is essential to have data on cancer survival. These have been examined less extensively than differences in cancer incidence. We have reviewed 42 studies on social class differences in cancer survival. Twenty-three studies were conducted in North America, and 15 in western Europea

Shift work, confounding and death from ischaemic heart disease.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relation between shift work and death from ischaemic heart disease (IHD) and evidence for confounding by social class and healthy shift worker effects. METHODS: A case-referent study nested within an industrial cohort was used. Cases (n = 635) were cohort members who died of ischaemic heart disease (ICD 410-414) during 1950-98 aged 75 or under. Referents were matched on age and year of starting work at the site and were alive at time of case's death. Shift work status was determined from historical personnel records and pre-employment weight, height, blood pressu

Alcohol, methylxanthine-containing beverages, and colorectal cancer in Córdoba, Argentina.

The relationship between social class indicators, body mass index (BMI), selected life-style habits (alcohol, coffee, maté and tea drinking) and colorectal cancer was investigated in a case-control study conducted between 1993 and 1997 in Córdoba, Argentina, a relatively high mortality area of colorectal cancer. Cases were 190 patients below age 80 years with incident, histologically confirmed colorectal adenocarcinomas, and controls were 393 patients admitted to hospital for a wide spectrum of acute, non-neoplastic disorders. Higher social class, based on occupation of the head of the househo

Psychological status of patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion undergoing bimaxillary surgery: A comparative study.

Skeletal Class III malocclusion can significantly impact psychological well-being. Although bimaxillary surgery is a well-established corrective intervention, its psychological effects are not fully understood. This study aims to investigate changes in self-esteem, sensitivity to criticism, and social appearance anxiety following surgery to inform targeted nursing interventions for psychological adaptation. This comparative study included 205 participants: 150 patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion who underwent bimaxillary surgery, and a control group of 55 individuals without malocclu

Risk and Emotion Among Healthy Volunteers in Clinical Trials.

Theorized as objective or constructed, risk is recognized as unequally distributed across social hierarchies. Yet the process by which social forces shape risk and risk emotions remains unknown. The pharmaceutical industry depends on healthy individuals to voluntarily test early-stage, investigational drugs in exchange for financial compensation. Emblematic of risk in late modernity, Phase I testing is a rich site for examining how class and race shape configurations of emotion and risk. Using interview data from 178 healthy trial participants, this article examines emotion and risk as mutuall

Social-environmental resiliencies protect against loneliness among HIV-Positive and HIV- negative older men who have sex with men: Results from the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS).

RATIONALE: Loneliness is associated with negative health outcomes, such as cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, dementia, physical functional decline, depression, and increased mortality risk, among HIV- positive and HIV-negative older men who have sex with men (MSM). Given these negative health outcomes, it is imperative to identify factors that minimize loneliness in these vulnerable groups. OBJECTIVE: We sought to examine whether social-environmental resiliencies-defined as an individual's level of support, social bonding, and psychological sense of community among gay men-buffer

Impact of Social Determinants of Health on Outcomes for Patients with Adult Congenital Heart Disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The study of adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD) is a rapidly growing field; however, more research is needed on the disparities affecting outcomes. With advances in medicine, a high percentage of patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) are advancing to adulthood, leading to an increase in the number of ACHD. This creates a pressing need to evaluate the factors, specifically the social determinants of health (SDOH) contributing to the outcomes for ACHD. RECENT FINDINGS: A myriad of factors, including, but not limited to, race, education, and socioeconomic statu

Marital status: association with social and economic circumstances, psychological state and outcomes of pregnancy.

We examined the association of marital status with economic, social and psychological factors and with the outcomes of pregnancy (defined as onset of labour, type of delivery, live and still births and birthweight). The study population was 1431 white women consecutively booking for antenatal care. Birth registrations were inspected. Of 278 women who were unmarried during pregnancy, 61 per cent were cohabiting, 26 per cent were living with adults other than the father and 13 per cent were living alone. Compared with the married women, unmarried women overall were, on average, younger, less edu

Determinants of marital happiness and unhappiness rated by alcoholics and their wives.

Alcoholic husbands and their wives generally agreed that the major aspects of marital happiness dealt with the quality of interpersonal relations. "Undesirable vices (excessive gambling, drinking, etc.)" ranked first as contributing to marital unhappiness while their absence was ranked 27.5 by the husbands and 9.5 by the wives as contributing to marital happiness. The elimination of undesirable habits may resolve much marital misery but it does not necessarily follow that as unhappiness decreases happiness will increase.

Influence of socioeconomic status on community-acquired pneumonia outcomes in elderly patients requiring hospitalization: a multicenter observational study.

BACKGROUND: The associations between socioeconomic status and community-acquired pneumonia outcomes in adults have been studied although studies did not always document a relationship. The aim of this multicenter observational study was to determine the association between socioeconomic status and community-acquired pneumonia outcomes in the elderly, in the context of a public health system providing universal free care to the whole population. METHODS: A total of 651 patients aged > or =65 years hospitalized due to community-acquired pneumonia through the emergency departments of five Spanish

Risk factors for Neisseria meningitidis carriage in a school during a community outbreak of meningococcal infection.

As part of the management of an outbreak of meningococcal infection, 119 school contacts of an index case were swabbed for nasopharyngeal carriage. In a cohort study, risk factors for Neisseria meningitidis carriage were ascertained by means of a questionnaire, completed by 114 (96%) of those swabbed. Twenty five (21%) cultures were identified as "neisseria positive'; of which there were 18 (15%) Neisseria meningitidis isolates, 2 (2%) Neisseria lactamica isolates and 5 (4%) showed contaminants only. Two (2%) carriers were identified as harbouring the implicated outbreak strain. Single variabl

Obesity class versus the Edmonton Obesity Staging System for Pediatrics to define health risk in childhood obesity: results from the CANPWR cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Disease severity in paediatric obesity is usually defined using the body-mass index (BMI). Although informative at the population level, its usefulness on an individual level has limitations. The use of a clinical staging system-Edmonton Obesity Staging System for Pediatrics (EOSS-P)-in identifying health risk has been proposed. This study aimed to examine the association between BMI class and EOSS-P stage. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was done in children with obesity aged 5-17 years who enrolled in the Canadian Pediatric Weight Management Registry (CANPWR) between May 31,
