[Treatment of selective mutism].

Selective mutism is a communication disorder of childhood in which the child does not speak in specific social situations despite the ability to speak in other situations. A literature review was completed in order to provide practical guidelines for the assessment and treatment of children with selective mutism. There are many different behavioral approaches in the treatment of this disorder, e.g. contingency management, shaping, stimulus fading, escape-avoidance, self-modeling, learning theory approaches. A clearer diagnostic understanding of the disorder as part of anxiety or oppositional d

Social psychological analysis of facilitated communication: implications for education.

Despite lack of empirical support, facilitated communication was rapidly adopted and used with individuals who have severe communication disorders. An overview of the psychological literature was provided here to support theoretical explanations for this rapid adoption. The literature suggests that cognitive biases, ambiguous stimuli, and biases in data may be associated with a tendency to adopt interventions such as facilitated communication. Psychosocial influences associated with autism, the helping relationship, and the professional career cycle may enhance a readiness to adopt alternative

Improving Developmental Abilities in Infants With Tuberous Sclerosis Complex: A Pilot Behavioral Intervention Study.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a rare genetic syndrome that confers risk for neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability. Delays in social communication and early cognitive abilities are observable as early as 9 months of age in children with TSC; however, there have been no studies of early behavioral intervention in TSC. We conducted a pilot study of an evidence-based, parent-mediated behavioral intervention focused on improving early social communication and play skills in 5 children with TSC (aged 1-3 years). Participants showed mainten

Physical activity and addressing emotional needs can help reduce medication dependence in autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that causes deficits in social interactions, communication skills, intellectual limitations, and self-injurious behaviors. Common systemic comorbidities include gastrointestinal issues, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. Recent study has found a link between gut microbiota alterations and neurobehavioral symptoms in children with ASD. Physical activity and exercise therapy have been demonstrated to promote communication and social interaction while also positively influencing microbiota composition. This research intends to high

The moderating role of sexual identity centrality in the association between gay community stress and social anxiety among sexual minority men.

Gay community stress has been linked to social anxiety among sexual minority men; however, the moderating role of identity-related processes (e.g., sexual identity centrality) has yet to be examined in this association. The present study investigated the association between gay community stress and two measures of social anxiety (i.e., self-reported social anxiety symptoms and interviewer-based diagnostic assessment of social anxiety disorder), as well as the moderating role of sexual identity centrality. Data come from the baseline assessment of a randomized controlled trial testing an LGBTQ-

Social competence and friendship formation in adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Friendship formation (making friends, keeping friends, and having successful interactions with peers and adults) constitutes a critical developmental-social milestone for adolescents. This process can be especially challenging for adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, whose attentional problems may negatively affect their social skills (verbal and nonverbal language) and who fail to appreciate the complexity and nuances of adolescent communication. They often do not respond to feedback cues. They may be perceived as "immature," lacking empathy, and loners and losers, they

Within- and between-twin comparisons of risk for childhood behavioral difficulties after preterm birth.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth and multiple gestation are independently associated with adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. The objective of this study was to describe risks of screening positive for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and anxiety in preterm-born twin children by zygosity (monozygotic, dizygotic) and birth order (first-born, second-born). METHODS: Caregivers of 349 preterm-born twin pairs (42% monozygotic) aged 3-18 years reported child behavioral outcomes on Strengths and Weaknesses of ADHD Symptoms and Normal Behavior; Social Respons

Brief Report: The Prevalence of Neurofibromatosis Type 1 among Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder Identified by the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an inherited neurocutaneous disorder associated with neurodevelopmental disorders including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The frequency of ASD/NF1 co-occurrence has been subject to debate since the 1980s. This relationship was investigated in a large population-based sample of 8-year-old children identified with ASD (N = 12,271) by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network. Twenty-two (1-in-558) children with ASD had diagnosed NF1, exceeding NF1 general population estimates by four to fiv

Review of intervention methods for language and communication disorders in children with autism spectrum disorders.

In recent years, the number of patients-particularly children-with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been continually increasing. ASD affects a child's language communication and social interaction to a certain extent and has an impact on behavior, intelligence level, and other aspects of the child. Data indicates that 40% to 70% of children with ASD experience language developmental delays, which are mainly manifested as lack of language or language developmental delay, self-talk, use of stereotyped language, parroting, et cetera. A language communication disorder is a major symptom of ASD a

Assessing autism-like behavior in mice: variations in social interactions among inbred strains.

Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder, with characteristics including impairments in reciprocal social interaction, impaired communication, and repetitive/stereotyped behaviors. Despite decades of research, the etiology of autism remains elusive. Thus, it is important that we pursue all avenues, in attempting to understand this complicated disorder. One such avenue is the development of animal models. While autism may be uniquely human, there are behavioral characteristics of the disorder that can be established in animal models. Evidence supports a genetic component for this disorder,

The autism diagnostic observation schedule-generic: a standard measure of social and communication deficits associated with the spectrum of autism.

The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Generic (ADOS-G) is a semistructured, standardized assessment of social interaction, communication, play, and imaginative use of materials for individuals suspected of having autism spectrum disorders. The observational schedule consists of four 30-minute modules, each designed to be administered to different individuals according to their level of expressive language. Psychometric data are presented for 223 children and adults with Autistic Disorder (autism), Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (PDDNOS) or nonspectrum diagnoses.

'More than 100 years of silence', elective mutism: a review of the literature.

Elective mutism is a rare disorder of communication, where the child speaks fluently in familiar situations, such as home, despite lack of speech in less familiar settings, for example school. A variety of temperamental and behaviour characteristics, co-morbid psychiatric conditions, neurodevelopmental delay and family factors have been associated with the disorder. EM children are described as excessively shy, withdrawn, 'slow to warm up', inhibited, often avoid eye contact, fear social embarrassment and experience significant separation anxiety, on separation from their attachment figures. Future perspectives of robot psychiatry: can communication robots assist psychiatric evaluation in the COVID-19 pandemic era?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Direct face-to-face interview between a psychiatrist and a patient is crucial in psychiatric evaluation, however, such traditional interviews are becoming difficult to conduct because of the infection risk in the COVID-19 era. As telepsychiatry, video interviews using internet are suggested to be useful to evaluate and assist individuals with mental disorders. However, some patients especially with social phobia, depression, and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) hesitate to use even such face-to-face-like tools. Communication robots have been proposed as future assistant tools

Co-Occurrence of Autism Spectrum Disorder and Achondroplasia.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and achondroplasia are common disorders on their own. However, this case of co-occurrence in the same patient has not yet been reported in literature except for a hypothesized statistical probability based on prevalence studies stating that two to five in 10 million children could have the probability of having both conditions occurring simultaneously. Achondroplasia typically presents with motor delays and difficulties that are related to musculoskeletal impairments that can affect self-care, mobility, and social cognition; however, the presence of delays in oth

The relationship between executive function abilities, adaptive behaviour, and academic achievement in children with externalising behaviour problems.

BACKGROUND: Specific domains of adaptive behaviours and academic achievement may, in part, depend on executive function capacities. Executive function deficits have been found to be associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), not Oppositional Defiant Disorder/Conduct Disorder (ODD/CD). METHOD: Using a sample of 110 adolescents, comprising four groups, ADHD only, co-morbid ADHD and ODD/CD, ODD/CD only, and a normal community control group, we assessed socialisation and communication skills with the Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scales, along with reading ability, and executi

Looking at eye gaze processing and its neural correlates in infancy-implications for social development and autism spectrum disorder.

The importance of eye gaze as a means of communication is indisputable. However, there is debate about whether there is a dedicated neural module, which functions as an eye gaze detector and when infants are able to use eye gaze cues in a referential way. The application of neuroscience methodologies to developmental psychology has provided new insights into early social cognitive development. This review integrates findings on the development of eye gaze processing with research on the neural mechanisms underlying infant and adult social cognition. This research shows how a cognitive neurosci

Recognizing autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), previously called autism, is a developmental condition that can cause significant social, communication, and behavioral challenges. Early symptoms of ASD can easily be overlooked. Clinicians who can recognize the symptoms of ASD can help children get prompt referral to specialists and early intervention, which is key to improving developmental outcomes for children with ASD.
