Psychiatric disorders in a patient with persistent developmental stuttering.

Persistent developmental stuttering (PDS) is a common disorder of speech with no identifiable cause. Psychiatric disorders appear to be related and influence clinical manifestation of PDS. In this case report, we present the clinical evolution of 1 PDS patient submitted to pharmacological treatment with fluoxetine and speech therapy intervention. At the end of 12 weeks of treatment, she evolved from 28 at Beck Depression Inventory; 32 in the Hamilton Scale for Anxiety; 43 and 47, respectively, in the anxiety and avoidance components of the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale; and severe speech impa

Genomic epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 in Bolivia, 2020-2024.

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted Bolivia due to its high social vulnerability and limited healthcare resources. In response to the limited local capacity for genomic surveillance during the pandemic, we characterized the genetic diversity and geographic distribution of SARS-CoV-2 variants across Bolivia from 2020 to 2024. A total of 714 SARS-CoV-2 genomic sequences were analyzed, including 313 newly sequenced samples and 401 retrieved from GISAID, allowing us to track viral evolution across six epidemic waves. The first wave, dominated by the Wuhan B.1 lineage, resulted in 8,943 dea

The politics of dependency estimates: Social Security Board statistics, 1935-1939.

State theorists maintain that Social Security Board (SSB) bureaucrats managed the evolution of public welfare. Institutional politics theory more readily accepts the influences of political interest groups. SSB archival records offer an opportunity to contrast these models and explore the early measurement of old age dependency. In reports designed to protect the 1935 Social Security Act, SSB staff exaggerated the extent of dependency among elderly persons. By 1939, Board statistics clearly showed that children were more impoverished than aged persons. SSB leadership did not repudiate prior es

[Physiologic surgery for anomalies of the cardio-hiatal region].

In 11 years (1971-1981) 1.040 cases of anomalies of the cardio-hiatal sector have been controlled in the Children's Hospital of the Social Security of Barcelona, 101 patients were operated. Surgical indication was based on the following facts: size of the hernia, poor clinical evolution with postural treatment, or infants of more than 2 years who also presented a high gastric acidity or a clearly pathological pHmetry, or, lastly, a social cause. We have used a much more physiological technique than that of Nissen, based on the obtention of a large segment of the abdominal esophagus on which ch

Rethinking trauma in an age of total visibility.

The digital age has transformed the way we experience and respond to traumatic events. Continuous and vicarious exposure to distressing visual content through social media and online news has created new pathways for psychological harm that existing diagnostic frameworks fail to capture. This perspective article examines how digital technologies have blurred the boundaries between direct and indirect trauma, enabling mediated exposure to evoke stress responses comparable to those arising from firsthand experience. Using the October 7, 2023, attacks in Israel as a case study, it explores how th

Effects of problematic social media use on depressive symptoms.

The objective of this study is to determine how problematic social media use (PSMU), social media use frequency (SMU), and the number of followers (SMF) predict depressive symptoms evolution in adolescents, while evaluating the moderating effects of gender and age. Longitudinal data from 2,121 adolescents (52.38% female) were analysed at two time points (T1, T2) with a mean age (T1) of 13.79 years. Quantile regression models (τ = 0.25, 0.50, 0.75) revealed that problematic use and SMU were associated with increased depressive symptoms across all quantiles. Higher SMU predicted greater increase

Changes in working and health conditions in different sectors between 2010 and 2019 in a representative sample of French workers.

BACKGROUND: Studies on evolution of working conditions and workers' health in developed countries show conflicting results, and often fail to identify evolutions by occupational sector. This study aimed to describe recent evolutions of working conditions and health status of French workers over a decade across different activity sectors. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Data from a large national French observatory of working conditions and health were used. This observatory collects, for a random sample of employees, data on their working conditions and health. Data on working conditions and health sta

Transient genital abnormalities in striped hyenas (Hyaena hyaena).

The highly masculinized genitalia of female spotted hyenas Crocuta crocuta is unique among mammals: Crocuta have no external vagina so urination, penile intromission and parturition take place through the clitoris, which mimics a fully erectile male penis. Among hyenids, virilization of external female genitalia has previously been observed only in Crocuta, so functional explanations of masculinization have focused on aspects of social ecology unique to the species. Here we first show that the striped hyena Hyaena hyaena exhibits both unusual similarity in male and female androgen concentratio

The coevolution of parochial altruism and war.

Altruism-benefiting fellow group members at a cost to oneself-and parochialism-hostility toward individuals not of one's own ethnic, racial, or other group-are common human behaviors. The intersection of the two-which we term "parochial altruism"-is puzzling from an evolutionary perspective because altruistic or parochial behavior reduces one's payoffs by comparison to what one would gain by eschewing these behaviors. But parochial altruism could have evolved if parochialism promoted intergroup hostilities and the combination of altruism and parochialism contributed to success in these conflic

Onset of panic disorder with agoraphobia. Toward an integrated model.

Of 57 patients with panic disorder with agoraphobia, more had their first panic in late spring and summer than in fall and winter, and in warm weather than in cold weather. In the month before the first panic 52% of the patients had prodromal depression or anxiety. Agoraphobic avoidance preceded the first panic in 23%, began within days after the first panic in 32% (without prodromal anxiety or depression in only 20%), and after more than one panic (1 week to 11 years later) in 41%. The site of the first panic was from the agoraphobic cluster (public places) in 81%, at work or school in 11%, a

Evolutionarily entrenched odorant receptors for (E)-β-farnesene signaling in Aphidinae aphids.

Alarm pheromones are crucial for the survival of social insects, enabling coordinated escape from predators. Their evolution has co-evolved with the development of olfactory recognition systems, suggesting specific molecular mechanisms underlie this adaptive relationship. We analyzed alarm pheromone compositions across 36 aphid species and found that EBF serves as the sole or primary alarm signal in the Aphidinae subfamily. Genomic annotation of 13 aphid species identified eight conserved, Aphidinae-specific odorant receptor (OR) clades under strong purifying selection. Three receptors-OR5, OR

Evolution of a novel adrenal cell type that promotes parental care.

Cell types with specialized functions fundamentally regulate animal behaviour, and yet the genetic mechanisms that underlie the emergence of novel cell types and their consequences for behaviour are not well understood1. Here we show that the monogamous oldfield mouse (Peromyscus polionotus) has recently evolved a novel cell type in the adrenal gland that expresses the enzyme AKR1C18, which converts progesterone into 20α-hydroxyprogesterone. We then demonstrate that 20α-hydroxyprogesterone is more abundant in oldfield mice, where it induces monogamous-typical parental behaviours, than in the c

Cooperation beyond the dyad: the emergence and stability of animal societies.

Cooperation is a fundamental driver of social evolution, yet we still lack an integrated framework explaining how interactions among individuals scale up to the formation and long-term stability of animal societies. Although major advances have been made, research has often focused on a narrow set of model taxa and on individual mechanisms in isolation, hindering a comparative understanding across species and theoretical approaches. In this review, we synthesise theoretical and empirical work to link the processes that initiate group living with those that sustain cooperation once groups are e

Digital Leadership in Education: A Bibliometric Analysis of Research Trends from 1993 to 2024.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), the COVID-19 pandemic, and the rapidly digitising educational system due to advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have made a change in leadership imperative. A key framework for improving organisational effectiveness in handling these changes is digital leadership. It combines technological competencies with traditional leadership. Even with increased scholarly interest, there remains a gap in the thorough analysis of the field's intellectual framework, thematic evolution, and collaborative dynamics. This study addresses this gap by conducting a bibl

[Inequality, health and nutrition in Spain: a regional view of the body mass index].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: a number of environmental determinants influence children growth and development and influence the potential expression or its evolution over time. In this paper we analyse the influence of selected sociodemographic factors on overweight, body weight and height in the Spanish adult population. METHODS: the analysis was conducted in a subsample (25 to 64 years of age) of the ENPE study, a cross-sectional observational study on a random population sample. Information was collected on age, gender, educational level, occupation and place of residence. Social class was c

Differences in optokinetic and vestibular ocular reflex performance in teleosts and their relationship to different life styles.

Horizontal eye movements in response to vestibular and optokinetic stimulation were investigated in 20 species of marine and fresh water teleosts. Most species performed spontaneous saccadic eye movements in light and in darkness. Successive saccades occurred either at irregular intervals and in different directions (few species), or in bursts of smaller saccades in one direction followed by saccades in the opposite direction (majority of species). Thus, in the latter group the lines of sight shifted cyclically from one side to the other about every 10-15 s. Eye movement responses in goldfish

Introduction.

In this chapter, the current status of dorsal rhizotomy is reviewed, highlighting its significant evolution over the past four decades. The first major advancement was sparked by Fasano's introduction of intraoperative neurophysiological procedures and Peacock's modification of the surgical site to the cauda equina. Subsequent advancements in surgical and neurophysiological techniques have expanded the indications for rhizotomy beyond spastic cerebral palsy, a condition affecting 0.2% of live births worldwide. Dorsal rhizotomy can significantly benefit children with spasticity by improving the

Similarities in acquired factors related to postmenopausal osteoporosis and sarcopenia.

Postmenopausal population is at increased risk of musculoskeletal impairments. Sarcopenia and osteoporosis are associated with significant morbidity and social and health-care costs. These two conditions are uniquely linked with similarities in pathophysiology and diagnostic methods. Uniform diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia are still evolving. Postmenopausal sarcopenia and osteoporosis share many environmental risk- and preventive factors. Moreover, geriatric frailty syndrome may result from interaction of osteoporosis and sarcopenia and may lead to increased mortality. The present paper rev

[Apropos of delusions of grandeur in general paresis: considerations in 1 case].

Nowadays diagnosis of neurosyphilis has become an infrequent event. Furthermore, the few patients studied have a clinical picture different from that described in the past. We report the clinical evolution of a patient with general paresis who suffered from delusions of grandeur, a clinical feature almost disappeared in these times. This mental disorder did not change after prolonged phenothyazines treatment. Among possible causes that made delusions of grandeur disappear in general paresis, remarkable improvements in therapy and major changes in social life should be considered.
