The roles of racial identity exploration and critical reflection in white young adults' commitment to social justice and racial justice.

White young adults in the United States often face challenges in developing anti-racist values and commitments, given that their distal and proximal contexts of development are fundamentally shaped by racist ideologies, such as white normativity and supremacy. Yet little is known about how some white young adults, despite these challenges, form life goals centered on social justice and racial justice-defined here as critical purpose. Drawing on frameworks of ethnic-racial identity, white racial identity development, and critical consciousness, this study investigated how white racial identity

From silenced to connected: measuring language-based identity expansion through digital media.

BACKGROUND: Social media have become a central arena for identity construction, particularly for minority communities whose languages and cultures have been historically marginalized. Drawing on self-expansion theory, this study examines how social media facilitate language-based identity expansion within the Kurdish community in Türkiye. Despite long-standing suppression of the Kurdish language and culture, digital platforms provide new spaces for linguistic reconnection, cultural expression, and the reinforcement of collective identity. While self-expansion theory has traditionally focused o

Social capital and the social formation of health-related preferences and behaviours.

Social capital appears to be an important determinant of health production and health utilization and demand. However, there is limited evidence on the mechanisms underlying this relationship. In this article we draw on the evidence and insights reported in this special issue along with findings from the economic and other social science literature to develop a discussion on the explanations of the likely (behavioural) mechanisms that underpin the connection between social capital and health. An important and under-explored influence mediating the relationship between social capital and health

Myopic social prediction and the solo comparison effect.

Four experiments explored the psychological processes by which people make comparative social judgments. Each participant chose how much money to wager on beating an opponent on either a difficult or a simple trivia quiz. Quiz difficulty did not influence the average person's probability of winning, yet participants bet more on a simple quiz than on a difficult quiz in the first 3 experiments. The results suggest that this effect results from a tendency to attend more closely to a focal actor than to others. Experiment 4 directly manipulated focusing; when participants were led to focus on the

A multilevel analysis of the interpersonal behavior of socially anxious people.

We investigate the interpersonal behavior of socially anxious (SA) and non-socially anxious (NSA) individuals at three different levels of analysis, focusing on the dimensions of warmth and dominance. Study 1 examines self-reported general interaction styles, Study 2 explores behavior occurring within the context of a single interaction, and in Study 3 we focus on the performance of a single conversational act (a disagreement). Studies 1 and 2 adopt the framework of Interpersonal Circumplex Theory (IPC; Kiesler, 1983), which is well suited for studying trait-level and interaction-level social

The effect of social dominance orientation on perceptions of corporal punishment.

Previous research has suggested the use of corporal punishment is widely endorsed in our society (Straus, 2000; Straus & Stewart, 1999). Furthermore, perceptions of what constitutes corporal punishment vary. The present study examined social dominance orientation (SDO) and age of child as potential factors that may influence perceptions of what is viewed as corporal punishment versus physical abuse. The sample consisted of 206 undergraduate students enrolled at a Rocky Mountain University. A series of regressions were used to examine the relationships between SDO and six forms of punishment. F

Fractures from the inside out: The antagonistic impacts of economic inequality on attitudes towards foreign entities.

Extensive research has documented that domestic economic inequality erodes social bonds and cohesion within nations. Yet, it remains unclear whether this inequality-driven fragmentation spills over to shape individuals' attitudes towards foreign entities. Drawing on a social identity perspective, we proposed two asymmetrically opposing pathways: domestic economic inequality primarily impairs attitudes towards foreign entities by weakening identification with all humanity (IWAH), while attenuated national identification provides a modest buffer. Analyses of a nationally representative survey (N

An identity on guard: the impact of microaggressions on the professional identity formation of residents.

PURPOSE: The development of a strong professional identity in medicine has important consequences for patient care, as proper identity formation impacts a physician's confidence, wellbeing, and performance. In non-medical professions, exposure to discrimination and stigma impacts how individuals construct their professional identity. Our study aims to explore how microaggressions from peers impact the professional identity formation of resident physicians. This work was guided by conceptual frameworks on professional identity formation that included socialization, role modelling, and hierarchi

Dimensions of Identity Development Scale: Confirmatory factor analysis, gender invariance, and external validity of the Persian version.

The present study was conducted to examine the psychometric properties and gender invariance of the Iranian version of the Dimensions of Identity Development Scale (DIDS). A total of 1453 adolescents (50.8% female; 14-18 years old, mean = 15.48) participated in a cross-sectional study and completed the DIDS and the Youth Self-Report of behavior problems. The Confirmatory Factor Analysis supported the six-factor model of the DIDS, echoing past studies showing the original 5th factor (Exploration in Depth) being divided into Exploration in Depth and Reconsidering the Commitment. The invariance t

Group memberships and post-traumatic growth: How we connect determines how we recover.

This paper examines key processes from the social identity model of traumatic identity change in the context of the aftermath of a natural disaster. It focuses on the roles of (i) group membership gain, (ii) group membership continuity, (iii) social identity revitalisation, and (iv) the severity of natural disaster exposure on post-traumatic growth (PTG) and post-traumatic stress (PTS). PARTICIPANTS: (N = 410, Mage = 53.24 years) comprised adult survivors of the Australian 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires, recruited to complete an online survey via geo-targeted Facebook advertisements. RESULTS:

Peer crowd affiliation, adherence, perceived support, and metabolic control in T1DM youth.

Youth with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) can face many challenges when adhering to their complex regimen in the context of their peer crowd. The aim of this study was to determine if peer crowd affiliation was associated with adolescents' adherence behaviors, perceived peer support, and metabolic control. A sample of 128 adolescents with T1DM completed the Peer Crowd Questionnaire, Diabetes Social Support Questionnaire-Friends Version, and Self-Care Inventory-Revised, and HbA1c readings were collected during their clinic visit. Results from this study suggest that adherence behaviors mediated the rel

Considering the negatively formed identity: Relationships between negative identity and problematic psychosocial beliefs.

INTRODUCTION: Developing a firm sense of identity is a critical developmental task in adolescence and emerging adulthood, but little or no empirical research exists regarding individuals who firmly form negative identities and psychosocial beliefs. This study examined the formation of negative identities in youth and its association with psychosocial beliefs in terms of variable-oriented psychosocial facets (i.e., dichotomous beliefs, cynicism, and social distrust) and person-oriented psychosocial profiles. METHODS: A total of 2313 young Japanese people (70.9% were females) aged 18-25 years a

Homeless identities: enacted and ascribed.

Homelessness has been a perennial concern for sociologists. It is a confronting phenomenon that can challenge western notions of home, a discrete family unit and the ascetics and order of public space. To be without a home and to reside in public places illustrates both an intriguing way of living and some fundamental inadequacies in the functioning of society. Much homelessness research has had the consequence of isolating the 'homeless person' as distinct category or indeed type of individual. They are ascribed with homeless identities. The homeless identity is not simply presented as one di

Relationship between team identification and trait aggression: a replication.

Research yielded no significant relationship between sport fandom and trait aggression. The current study replicated previous efforts using the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire, an updated version of the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory. In contrast to past work, the current study did yield a significant relationship between fandom and aggression for men.

Sex-role behavior change: intrasubject studies of boyhood gender disturbance.

Sex-role behaviors were modified in a seven-year-old boy who had been evaluated by an independent psychiatrist as manifesting cross-gender identification. The child's developmental history paralleled the retrospective reports of adult transsexuals. In Experiment 1, the boy was treated in the clinic by a nonprofessional female "therapist" who reinforced "masculine" sex-typed play behaviors and extinguished "feminine" behaviors. The treatment effects generalized to the boy's play with a different set of toys in the presence of male and female strangers, but did not generalize to the boy's play i

The Effects of Ethnic Identity on Discrimination and Depression and Anxiety in a Sample of Arab American Adults.

The aim of the study was to clarify how ethnic identity may impact poor mental health outcomes related to discrimination among Arab American adults in Southeast Michigan, USA. 286 respondents completed a health attitudes and behaviors survey. We used structural equation modeling with path and multi-group analyses to examine moderation effects of ethnic identity on the relationship between discrimination and depression and anxiety, and further moderation based on gender. Ethnic identity positively buffered against depression and anxiety associated with discrimination. In the subgroup analysis,

Exploring individuation among Latine first-generation students: Insights from culturally informed memorable messages.

When Latine first-generation college students transition to college, they must renegotiate a balance between autonomy and relatedness with their families-a process known as individuation. Individuation encompasses five dimensions: support seeking, connectedness, intrusiveness, self-reliance, and fear of disappointing parents. Existing measures of individuation prioritize westernized assumptions about parent-child relationships (e.g., egalitarianism, mutual respect) over those more salient in Latine families (e.g., respeto, familismo). To build more culturally grounded perspectives on individua

A Longitudinal Study of the Relationship between Identity Development Processes and Self-Esteem among Korean College Freshmen.

Self-esteem may serve both as a psychological resource that facilitates personal identity development processes and as an outcome of a consolidated identity. However, longitudinal evidence remains limited. This study tracked 641 South Korean first-year college students (48.0% women; Mage = 19.13) across four waves spaced three months apart during their first academic year to test bidirectional links between Luyckx et al.’s (2008) five dimensions of personal identity processes (exploration in breadth, exploration in depth, commitment making, identification with commitment, ruminative exploratio

To Show or Not to Show: Factors within the School Environment That Influence the Expression of LGBTQ Identities.

Prejudice against LGBTQ people during their schooling years can be detrimental due to its long-term consequences. This includes the development of beliefs that the world is unsafe, which can perpetuate mental health struggles later in life. Fostering a school environment where LGBTQ people can express their identity can contribute to greater well-being. This qualitative study drew on interviews with 13 school graduates to examine the environmental factors within Australian schools that influenced LGBTQ students' expression of their identity. Drawing on Altman's conceptualization of oppression
