Factor structure of the Social Phobia Scale (SPS) and the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) in a clinical sample recruited from the community.

BACKGROUND: The Social Phobia Scale (SPS) and the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) are widely used self-report questionnaires to assess symptoms of social anxiety. While SPS measures social performance anxiety, SIAS measures social interaction anxiety. They are mostly reported simultaneously, but there have not been consistent results of the joint factor structure and therefore no consistent recommendations on how to use and evaluate the questionnaires. This study aimed (1) to evaluate the underlying joint factor structure of the SPS and SIAS and (2) to test whether SPS and SIAS are rel

Aberrant brain network and eye gaze patterns during natural social interaction predict multi-domain social-cognitive behaviors in girls with fragile X syndrome.

Girls with fragile X syndrome (FXS) often manifest significant symptoms of avoidance, anxiety, and arousal, particularly in the context of social interaction. However, little is currently known about the associations among neurobiological, biobehavioral such as eye gaze pattern, and social-cognitive dysfunction in real-world settings. In this study, we sought to characterize brain network properties and eye gaze patterns in girls with FXS during natural social interaction. Participants included 42 girls with FXS and 31 age- and verbal IQ-matched girls (control). Portable functional near-infrar

Bigger is better: Full-length versions of the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale and Social Phobia Scale outperform short forms at assessing treatment outcome.

The Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) and Social Phobia Scale (SPS) are 20-item companion measures of social anxiety symptoms frequently used to evaluate outcome in treatment trials. The SIAS-6, SPS-6, and Social Interaction Phobia Scale (SIPS) are promising short forms of the SIAS and SPS. The current study evaluated whether it is sound to use these short scales instead of the full-length instruments to measure outcome in social anxiety disorder (SAD) treatment studies, using data from a trial in which 255 adults with SAD were treated with traditional or imagery-enhanced group cognitive

[The concept of «multiple complex developmental disorder» - a disorder of social interaction, paranoid thinking and social anxiety in a 17-year-old boy].

OBJECTIVES: Multiple complex developmental disorder (MCDD) is a little-known disorder characterized by disturbances in the regulation of emotions, social interactions and thought disorders. Neither the classification system of ICD-10 nor the DSM-IV lists MCDD as an independent disorder. METHODS: The study presents an overview on diagnostic criteria, current research and illustration by a case report of a 17-year-old adolescent. RESULTS: MCDD, autistic disorders and schizophrenic disorders partially overlap. A clear classification or differentiation is currently not clearly possible. CONCLUS

[Improving Social Participation through Cochlear Implants for Hearing Impaired Persons? On the Ambivalence of Human-Machine-Interaction and the Importance of Psycho-Social Support].

AIM OF THE STUDY: Cochlea implants help persons that suffer from deafness over time to regain hearing capacity. However, persons with CI implants experience year-long processes of adapting to technology-assisted hearing. The study highlights how people experience those processes and how they deal with changing expectations. METHODS: Within this qualitative study, 50 cochlear implant recipients were interviewed about their personal experiences with the supplying clinics. 30 persons were recruited through self-help groups; another 20 persons were recruited through a learning center for hearing-

Effects of Social Stories on Increasing Social Interaction and Engagement of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Inclusive Settings.

d/Deaf or hard of hearing (d/Dhh) students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may require specific approaches to promote social inclusion. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of reading social stories with American Sign Language vocabulary to students who are d/Dhh with ASD (d/Dhh-ASD) and their peers in inclusive settings, using a non-concurrent multiple baseline design across participants. To examine the effectiveness of the intervention, the frequency of four communicative social behaviors and the duration of social engagement with peers were recorded for each particip

The effect of Interaction Anxiousness Scale and Brief Social Phobia Scale for screening social anxiety disorder in college students: a study on discriminative validity.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is one of the most prevalent mental health problems, but there is little research concerning the effective screening instruments in practice. METHODS: This study was designed to examine the discriminative validity of Interaction Anxiousness Scale (IAS) and Brief Social Phobia Scale (BSPS) for the screening of SAD through the compared and combined analysis. Firstly, 421 Chinese undergraduates were screened by the IAS and BSPS. Secondly, in the follow-up stage, 248 students were interviewed by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV. Receiver opera

Physical disability and social interaction: factors associated with low social contact and home confinement in disabled older women (The Women's Health and Aging Study).

OBJECTIVES: This study examines the association of disability and social interaction, measured as in-person contact with non-household members and home confinement, and identifies sociodemographic, socioeconomic, and health-related factors that modify this relationship. METHODS: Participants were 1,002 moderately to severely disabled community-dwelling women aged 65 and older from the Women's Health and Aging Study, identified by screening an age-stratified random sample of Medicare beneficiaries in Baltimore, Maryland. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds of low social i

Introducing ISPA-AD: Interactive social problem-solving assessment for Alzheimer's disease.

Social adaptation difficulties in Alzheimer's disease (AD) are frequently associated with impairments in social cognition, including theory of mind and emotion recognition. However, social problem-solving (SPS) may also be a crucial yet understudied component of these deficits. This study aimed to develop and conduct an exploratory evaluation of the Interactive Social Problem-Solving Assessment for Alzheimer's Disease (ISPA-AD), an experimental tool addressing the lack of instruments to evaluate SPS in AD. ISPA-AD presents interactive scenarios designed to evaluate verbal and non-verbal compon

Linear self-acceptance and nonlinear social comparison: interacting influences on adolescent depression.

BACKGROUND: This research builds on the understanding that low self-acceptance is an important feature of adolescent depression, and that social comparison is a critical factor in self-concept formation during adolescence. However, there are gaps in our understanding of their interactive effects and the non-linear features between these factors in influencing adolescent depression. AIM: The study attempts to test two main hypotheses: (1) increased levels of self-acceptance will correlate with reduced depressive symptoms and moderate the negative effects of social comparison on depression; and

The effects of familiarity and facial occlusion on social gaze dynamics in natural dyadic interactions.

Although gaze information is important for human interactions, recent studies show that in natural exchanges, mutual face-to-face looks occur relatively infrequently, on less than 15% of interaction time. In the present study, we conducted two dyadic interaction experiments utilizing dual mobile eye-tracking eyeglasses to examine if the prevalence of mutual face-to-face looks may be affected by interactive context. In Experiment 1, we strengthened the interactive context by measuring looking behaviours in dyads of friends. In Experiment 2, we weakened the interactive context by measuring looki

Exploring the interactions of athletes and their social support network following sport-related concussion.

Research on social support following sport-related concussion (SRC) has largely been examined from the athlete perspective. This qualitative study explored social support interactions during recovery following SRC. We conducted semi-structured interviews with six athletes and 16 individuals who were identified as being part of the athletes' social support network (e.g., teammates, friends, or family members). All 22 participants in this study completed a timeline mapping activity, which allowed participants to share details about the athletes' SRC recovery, including the type and timing of sup

A stem cell activation state coupling spermatogenesis with social interactions in Drosophila males.

Reproduction is paramount to animals. For it to be successful, a coordination of social behavior, physiology, and gamete production is necessary. How are social cues perceived and how do they affect physiology and gametogenesis? While females, ranging from insects to mammals, have provided multiple insights about this coordination, its existence remains largely unknown in males. Here, by using the Drosophila male as a model, we describe a phenomenon by which the availability of potential mating partners triggers an activation state on the stem cell populations of the testis, boosting spermatog

Abnormal Social Interactions in a Drosophila Mutant of an Autism Candidate Gene: Neuroligin 3.

Social interactions are typically impaired in neuropsychiatric disorders such as autism, for which the genetic underpinnings are very complex. Social interactions can be modeled by analysis of behaviors, including social spacing, sociability, and aggression, in simpler organisms such as Drosophila melanogaster. Here, we examined the effects of mutants of the autism-related gene neuroligin 3 (nlg3) on fly social and non-social behaviors. Startled-induced negative geotaxis is affected by a loss of function nlg3 mutation. Social space and aggression are also altered in a sex- and social-experienc

Investigating Humor in Social Interaction in People With Intellectual Disabilities: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

Background: Humor, both producing and appreciating, underpins positive social interactions. It acts as a facilitator of communication. There are clear links to wellbeing that go along with this form of social engagement. However, humor appears to be a seldom studied, cross-disciplinary area of investigation when applied to people with an intellectual disability. This review collates the current state of knowledge regarding the role of humor behavior in the social interactions of people with intellectual disabilities and their carers. Method: A systematic review utilizing the Preferred Reportin

Disembodying the invisible: electrocommunication and social interactions by passive reception of a moving playback signal.

Mormyrid weakly electric fish have a special electrosensory modality that allows them to actively sense their environment and to communicate with conspecifics by emitting sequences of electric signals. Electroreception is mediated by different types of dermal electroreceptor organs for active electrolocation and electrocommunication, respectively. During electrocommunication, mormyrids exhibit stereotyped discharge sequences and locomotor patterns, which can be induced by playback of electric signals. This raises the question: what sensory information is required to initiate and sustain social

Heart rate variability during adolescent and adult social interactions: a meta-analysis.

Social interaction skill is important for psychological wellbeing, stress regulation, protection from disability and overall life satisfaction. Increase in activity of the vagus nerve, measured by heart rate variability (HRV), is associated with social interaction skill and decreased stress. In this meta-analysis we collated statistics from thirteen studies consisting of 787 participants who were participating in social interactions while HRV was simultaneously collected. Results revealed that while dyadic social interactions do not increase HRV generally from a baseline state, negative dyadic
