Background Like other epidemics, the current heroin epidemic in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic is a largely invisible and devastating social problem linked to numerous structural and social determinants of health. Methods In this article, we connect a community-based participatory research methodology - "PhotoVoice" - with the theoretical orientation of critical medical anthropology to identify local interpretations of complex social and structural factors that are most salient to the well-being of local Dominican populations affected by drug addiction. Results Specifically, we describe Proye

Adults' social network ties serve multiple functions and play prominently in quitting smoking. We examined three types of adults' egocentric social networks, including family, friends, and friends online to investigate how two network characteristics with major relevance to health behavior, network size and tie closeness, related to the emotional and confidant support and to pro- and anti-smoking social influence these ties may transmit. We also examine whether the social support and social influence constructs related to smoking abstinence. We utilized baseline and 7-day abstinence survey dat

OBJECTIVES: Social determinants of health (SDoH), including structural racism and economic marginalization, shape mental health outcomes but are frequently conceptualized at a level too broad for direct clinical intervention. In contrast, health-related social needs (HRSNs), such as food insecurity and housing instability, represent more proximal and actionable targets within clinical and community-based settings. Despite growing recognition of their importance, the relationship between HRSNs and depression among structurally marginalized older adults remains under explored. This study seeks t

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic laid bare some of the United States' most devastating health and social inequities faced by people experiencing homelessness. Homeless populations experience disproportionate rates of underlying health conditions, stigma and marginalization that often disenfranchise them from health and social services, and living conditions that potentiate the risk of COVID-19 transmission and adverse outcomes.
METHODS: Guided by the socio-ecological model, this community-based participatory research study examined the impacts of the COVID-19 public health crisis on people e

Previous research has examined the experiences of voluntary, community, and social enterprise (VCSE) group providers, but the voices of group users, especially those recovering from, or living with SMI, are sparse. This study addresses that gap, using the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown as a natural experiment to gain insights into the experiences of individuals participating in VCSE-run creative and social groups, and comparing this with the experiences of providers. We conducted photo-elicitation focus groups to explore group members' perspectives. Lockdown highlighted to group members what they

AIM: To synthesize evidence on approaches used in the co-design of maternal and early childhood primary care interventions with structurally marginalized populations.
BACKGROUND: Involving end-users when developing health interventions can enhance outcomes. There is limited knowledge on how to effectively engage structurally marginalized populations (i.e., groups that are affected by structural inequities resulting in a disproportionate burden of social exclusion and poor health) when co-designing maternal child primary care interventions.
METHODS: A rapid scoping review was conducted by sea

BACKGROUND: Client-Centered Representative Payee (CCRP) is an intervention modifying implementation of a current policy of the US Social Security Administration, which appoints organizations to serve as financial payees on behalf of vulnerable individuals receiving Social Security benefits. By ensuring beneficiaries' bills are paid while supporting their self-determination, this structural intervention may mitigate the effects of economic disadvantage to improve housing and financial stability, enabling self-efficacy for health outcomes and improved antiretroviral therapy adherence. UNLABELLED: Policy Points Population health science that uses large data sets to study health inequalities increasingly draws on intersectionality, the idea that overlapping forms of disadvantage shape health inequalities. This approach is essential to the pursuit of health equity because it provides a more complete and sound evidence base for population health policy. As this approach has gained traction, it has drifted from intersectionality's founding ideas about social power and justice. This Perspective develops a framework of justice for the field that consists of a multidimensional acco

INTRODUCTION: Household food insecurity (HFI), stress, isolation, and discrimination are major determinants of health that disproportionately affect 2SLGBTQ + people. The COVID-19 pandemic potentially exacerbated these inequities. This study investigates HFI rates among 2SLGBTQ + adults living in diverse household conditions during the pandemic and explores the idea that heteronormative conceptions of the "household" may affect measurement of HFI.
METHODS: Cross-sectional survey responses were collected from 437 self-identified 2SLGBTQ + people from Toronto, Canada between March and July 2021

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Coordination of governmental action is crowded with policies and programs that are highly interdependent, sometimes operating in silos if not contradicting each other. These dilemmas, or administrative quagmires, are heightened for older adults in general, but they are particularly problematic for marginalized older adults because these groups often require public assistance and support. This scoping review studies the coordination of governmental action on aging published in social science journals, focusing on 6 groups of marginalized older adults: those with histo

BACKGROUND: Individuals with pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis (POMS) experience higher levels of depressive symptoms compared with those with monophasic acquired demyelinating syndromes (mono-ADSs). Associations among racial identity, marginalization, and depression have not been investigated in these populations.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the relationship among racial identity, neighborhood marginalization, and depression in POMS compared with mono-ADS.
METHODS: Secondary analysis of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-DC) and racial identity data linked to Canadian

Workplace violence against nurses and midwives intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic, exposing and amplifying longstanding structural marginalization in health systems across Latin America. This study analyzes how different forms of violence were experienced and described by nursing professionals during this period. A secondary qualitative analysis was conducted using text-based responses from an international online survey developed by the Global Consortium, which included 3860 nurses and midwives from 18 Latin American and Caribbean countries. Data were examined through Descending Hierarc

Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Burundi face substantial mental health risks stemming from trauma, displacement, bereavement, and sexual violence, compounded by poverty, social upheaval, and limited mental health services. Stigma and marginalization further constrain help-seeking. This study examines the distinct mental health challenges faced by AGYW in Burundi, exploring how socio-cultural and structural factors shape their psychological well-being and identifying key barriers and facilitators to accessing mental health support. Seven focus group discussions (FGDs; total n = 55; 7

Male and transgender sex workers in Thailand experience high rates of violence, social stigma, economic marginalization, as well as limited access to legal protections and support services. However, this population remains significantly understudied in trafficking and sex work literature and often lacks adequate support services. As such, through quantitative surveys with 100 sex workers assigned male at birth (73% transgender/third gender, 26% cisgender) in Bangkok, this research explores their experiences of harm, knowledge of support services, and barriers to accessing assistance. Over half

BACKGROUND: The incidence of spinal cord injury varies significantly across different countries, with certain regions in Africa reporting higher rates compared to other parts of the world. Spinal cord injury is a chronic condition that leads to various impairments and limitations in activity participation during community reintegration. The study aimed to explore the barriers to community reintegration for people with SCI living in Rwanda.
METHODOLOGY: A phenomenological qualitative design was used. Fifteen individuals, were purposively selected for diversity and interviewed telephonically. I

PURPOSE: The cost-of-living crisis witnessed in the UK, in addition to the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, has exacerbated growing concerns about its disproportionate impact on caregivers. All caregivers face unprecedented challenges, but this is further intensified when caring for someone with drug and alcohol dependency which this paper argues are direct social harms.
METHODS: This paper presents findings from an external evaluation of three projects from a wider national programme funded by NHS England and Improvement [NHSE/I]. Identified by NHSE/I as a vulnerable community, interv

BACKGROUND: The growing population of older adults with long-term drug use has been largely overlooked in research. While most research on street culture have focused on younger men, the experiences of aging within these environments have received limited attention. This study seeks to address that gap.
METHODS: We conducted 20 semi-structured interviews with men aged 55 or older with current and long-term drug use, in Malmö, Sweden. The data were analyzed using a thematic approach.
RESULTS: Our analysis identified three overarching themes that illustrate the men's status and strategies with

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence and demographic, psychiatric, and trauma-focused correlates of psychotic experiences (PEs) in the Afghan general population.
METHODS: Data were drawn from a cross-sectional household survey implemented in eight regions of Afghanistan (N = 4445). The CIDI structured instrument was administered to adults to assess psychiatric disorders and psychotic experiences; life events and PTSD were assessed using validated instruments. Weighted multivariate models integrated socio-demographics, regions, traumas as determinants of PE.
RESULTS: PEs were frequently rep

Two important maternal cardiometabolic disorders (CMDs), hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (HDP) (including pre-eclampsia) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), result in a large disease burden for pregnant individuals worldwide. A global consensus has not been reached about the diagnostic criteria for HDP and GDM, making it challenging to assess differences in their disease burden between countries and areas. However, both diseases show an unevenly distributed disease burden for regions with a low income or middle income, or low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), or regions with
