Exploring the relationships between fear-related xenophobia, perceptions of out-group entitativity, and social contact in Norway.

An internet-related survey distributed to Norwegian students explored predictors of fear-related xenophobia toward immigrants. Specifically, this study examined a new social construct called "entitativity" (i.e., the extent to which out-group members are perceived as bonded together in a cohesive or organized unit), as well as frequency of informal social contact and valence of a recent encounter in relation to certain xenophobic attitudes. Correlational and multiple regression analyses indicated that perceived out-group entitativity was a moderate predictor of fear-related xenophobia. Volunta

Consultants' perceptions of school counselors' ability to implement an empirically-based intervention for adolescent social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety is highly prevalent but goes untreated. Although school-based CBT programs are efficacious when delivered by specialized psychologists, it is unclear whether school counselors can implement these interventions effectively, which is essential to promote sustainable school programs. We present an initial consultation strategy to support school counselor implementation of group CBT for social anxiety and an evaluation of counselors' treatment fidelity. Counselors were highly adherent to the treatment, but competence varied based on measurement. Counselors and consultants demonstrat

Psychophysiological arousal and biased perception of bodily anxiety symptoms in socially anxious children and adolescents: a systematic review.

Cognitive models of social anxiety [Clark and Wells, Social phobia: Diagnosis, assessment, and treatment, Guilford Press, New York, 1995], diagnostic criteria and studies on adult samples suggest that both an overestimation of bodily anxiety symptoms and psychophysiological abnormalities play an important role in social anxiety. To date, less is known about such a perception bias and physiological characteristics in children and adolescents with social anxiety. We performed a systematic review of the literature in the electronic databases Medline, PsycINFO, and PSYNDEX. Additional studies were

"They like me, they like me not": popularity and adolescents' perceptions of acceptance predicting social functioning over time.

This study examined the dual roles of adolescents' perceptions of social acceptance and sociometric popularity in predicting relative changes over time in adolescents' social functioning. Observational, self-report, and peer report data were obtained from 164 adolescents who were interviewed at age 13 years and then again at age 14 years, as well as their same-sex close friends. Adolescents who felt positively about their own social standing fared well over time, regardless of their level of sociometric popularity. Further, low popularity was particularly problematic for adolescents who failed

Social Perception of Emotional Expression in Facial Synkinesis versus Complete Facial Paralysis: A Narrative Review and Observer-Based Survey Data.

INTRODUCTION: Facial paralysis is associated with social isolation, depression, anxiety, and impaired daily functioning. Affect display, defined as the outward facial expression of internal emotional states, is a key component of nonverbal communication and plays a central role in how individuals are perceived by others. Prior observer-based research on social perception has largely treated facial paralysis as a single entity or has focused primarily on complete facial paralysis (CFP) despite meaningful clinical differences between CFP and facial synkinesis (FS). METHODS: We performed a narra

Severity of insomnia and stress perception as a chained mediator between perceived social support and somatic symptoms in Chinese's nurses.

BACKGROUND: Social support is crucial for reducing nurses' somatic symptoms and insomnia, which are linked to stress perception. Understanding these relationships can help explain somatic symptom mechanisms in nursing staff. METHODS: We studied 293 front-line nurses using scales for perceived stress, social support, insomnia severity, and somatic symptoms. We analyzed the data with Pearson correlations and SPSS mediation model. RESULTS: Greater perceived social support was associated with fewer somatic symptoms, lower insomnia severity, and less perceived stress. Insomnia severity was linked

How does health communication on social media influence e-cigarette perception and use? A trend analysis from 2017 to 2020.

OBJECTIVE: E-cigarettes have achieved a high prevalence rapidly. While social media is among the most influential platforms for health communication, its impact on attitudes and behaviors of e-cigarettes and its changes over time remain underexplored. This study aims to address the gap. METHODS: Four years of data (2017-2020) were derived from the U.S. Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) (aged 18-64 years, n = 9,914). Initially, key variables were compared across years. Furthermore, guided by the health belief model, we employed a moderated mediation model to examine the influen

Drinking water quality in areas impacted by oil activities in Ecuador: Associated health risks and social perception of human exposure.

The unregulated oil exploitation in the Northern Ecuadorian Amazon Region (NEAR), mainly from 1964 to the 90's, led to toxic compounds largely released into the environment. A large majority of people living in the Amazon region have no access to drinking water distribution systems and collects water from rain, wells or small streams. The concentrations of major ions, trace elements, PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes) were analyzed in different water sources to evaluate the impacts of oil extraction and refining. Samples were taken from t

Prediction of suicidal ideation and rumination based on illness perception and social support in cancer patients: A cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: According to the World Health Organization, cancer is the second leading cause of death globally after cardiovascular diseases and the third leading cause of death in Iran. It is generally accepted that suicidal thoughts and rumination affect the treatment process of cancer. As the rate of suicide in the first 6 months after cancer diagnosis has been reported seven times compared to the general population. On the other hand, it seems that patients' perception of their disease and social support are predictors of suicidal thoughts and rumination in these patients. In this study, we inv

Asymmetric polarization: The perception that Republicans pose harm to disadvantaged groups drives Democrats' greater dislike of Republicans in social contexts.

Given growing political polarization in recent years, partisan dislike-defined as the negativity that individuals display at the prospect of having close social relations with supporters of the other party-has received increasing attention. While traditional work in social and political psychology has held that conservatives display greater outgroup hostility than liberals, the worldview conflict perspective suggests that both groups similarly express hostility toward value incongruent outgroups. Contradicting both established perspectives, we present evidence across five preregistered studies

The Social Amplification of Secondary Risk Perceptions: Online Media Attention, Interpersonal Discussion, and Dengue Vaccination Willingness in Singapore.

Drawing on a combined perspective integrating the social amplification of risk framework and secondary risk theory, we examined the ways in which people's online attention and interpersonal discussion shape their perceptions of secondary risks related to the dengue vaccine, as well as how these perceptions subsequently impact their willingness to receive the vaccine. Data were collected through an online survey (N = 1,001) using quota sampling methods. The findings indicated that interpersonal discussions had a positive connection to individuals' perceptions of both the severity and susceptibi

Physical education teachers' perceptions and experiences of inclusion in Türkiye: implications for the quality of life and social participation of students with disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Inclusive education aims to provide equitable access to quality education for all students. While its principles are widely accepted, implementing inclusive education in subjects such as physical education presents specific challenges and requires distinct teacher competencies. Because physical education promotes physical activity, social interaction, and well-being, inclusive practices in this area are essential for the quality of life and social participation of students with disabilities. This study examined the perceptions, experiences, and needs of physical education teachers

Social Media and Direct-to-Consumer Treatments in Pediatric and Young-Adult Patients With Alopecia: Variable Use and Mixed Perceptions.

BACKGROUND: Social media is a common source of health information for children and young adults, yet little is known about how young patients with alopecia engage with hair loss-related content online. Direct-to-consumer (DTC) treatments are also widely marketed for alopecia, but data on their use and perceived effectiveness in pediatric populations remain limited. This study aimed to characterize social media use among patients with alopecia and examine patterns of DTC treatment use. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of patients aged ≤ 25 years with physician-diagnosed alopecia

Platforms, risk perceptions, and reporting: the impact of illicit drug advertisements on social media among UK secondary students.

BACKGROUND: The sale and advertisement of illicit drugs on social media is a rapidly evolving landscape. While existing research has focused on market structures, purchase strategies, and platform types, there is limited understanding of how viewing such content affects young people. This study aims to examine young people's experiences with illicit drug ads on social media and explore the relationship between exposure to these ads and their attitudes and behaviours towards drug use. METHODS: We conducted an online survey of students aged 13-18 (N = 1,151), distributed to UK schools by two dr
