"I'm a Work in Progress": Rethinking Posttraumatic Growth Among Low-Income Black Men.

Low-income Black men in the United States experience cumulative trauma shaped by structural violence, including poverty, residential segregation, over-policing, mass incarceration, and community violence. These systemic harms disrupt identity, relationships, and opportunity, constraining both exposure to trauma and pathways for recovery and growth. Drawing on Tedeschi and Calhoun's posttraumatic growth (PTG) framework, integrated with socioecological and culturally grounded perspectives on resilience, this study examines how low-income Black men make meaning of trauma and pursue transformation

Rewiring the future: drugs abused in adolescence may predispose to mental illness in adult life by altering dopamine axon growth.

Adolescence is a period of increased exploration and novelty-seeking, which includes new social behaviors, as well as drug experimentation, often spurred on by peer pressure. This is unfortunate, as the immature state of the adolescent brain makes it particularly susceptible to the negative developmental impact of drug use. During adolescence, dopamine terminals, which have migrated from the ventral tegmental area, pause in the nucleus accumbens, before segregating by either forming local connections or growing towards the prefrontal cortex (PFC). This developmentally late and lengthy process

Pathways to child and adolescent psychiatric clinics: a multilevel study of the significance of ethnicity and neighbourhood social characteristics on source of referral.

BACKGROUND: In the Swedish society, as in many other societies, many children and adolescents with mental health problems do not receive the help they need. As the Swedish society becomes increasingly multicultural, and as ethnic and economic residential segregation become more pronounced, this study utilises ethnicity and neighbourhood context to examine referral pathways to child and adolescent psychiatric (CAP) clinics. METHODS: The analysis examines four different sources of referrals: family referrals, social/legal agency referrals, school referrals and health/mental health referrals. Th

Tradeoffs in viral fitness driven by alternative entry pathways.

Enveloped viruses can enter cells either through endocytosis or by direct fusion with the plasma membrane. The latter pathway often leads to syncytia formation, caused by the fusion of infected cells with neighboring receptor-bearing cells. Yet, the implications of these two alternative entry routes for viral fitness and evolution remain poorly understood. To address this, we used a vesicular stomatitis virus-based system engineered to express the SARS-CoV-2 spike. Because deletion of the spike furin cleavage site (ΔFCS) abolishes plasma membrane fusion and restricts entry to the endocytic pat

Reinterpreting ethnic patterns among white and African American men who inject heroin: a social science of medicine approach.

BACKGROUND: Street-based heroin injectors represent an especially vulnerable population group subject to negative health outcomes and social stigma. Effective clinical treatment and public health intervention for this population requires an understanding of their cultural environment and experiences. Social science theory and methods offer tools to understand the reasons for economic and ethnic disparities that cause individual suffering and stress at the institutional level. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We used a cross-methodological approach that incorporated quantitative, clinical, and ethnograph

Examination of multidimensional geographic mobility and sexual behaviour among Black cisgender sexually minoritized men in Chicago.

Black sexually minoritized men (BSMM) are the most likely to acquire HIV in Chicago- a racially segregated city where their daily travel may confer different HIV-related risks. From survey and GPS data among participants of the Neighbourhoods and Networks Cohort Study, we examined spatial (proportion of total activity space away from home), temporal (proportion of total GPS points away from home), and motivation-specific (discordance between residential and frequented sex or socializing neighbourhoods) dimensions of mobility. To identify potential drivers of BSMM's risk, we then examined assoc

Hesperetin and it nanocrystals ameliorate social behavior deficits and oxido-inflammatory stress in rat model of autism.

Prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA) induces behavioral disorders and enhancement of oxido-inflammatory stress in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). The aim of this study was to investigate the comparative effects of hesperetin (Hst) and nano-hesperetin on social behavior deficits and oxido-inflammatory indexes in prenatally valproic acid-exposed rat offspring. Pregnant Wistar rats on embryonic day 0 (E0) were segregated into six groups; Group-1 served as vehicle, received distillated water orally (PO) from E1 until the end of lactation and saline intraperitoneally (i.p) on E12.5. Medical students' evaluation of digital problem-based learning: a mixed-methods systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Digital Problem-Based Learning (DPBL) is becoming more frequently used to facilitate the development of knowledge and skills in medical education, yet student satisfaction and engagement with DPBL remain insufficiently understood. METHODS: This mixed-methods systematic review aimed to examine how medical students perceive and experience DPBL. We searched four databases (Feb 5-Jun 30, 2024) following JBI and PRISMA guidelines, yielding 3459 abstracts and 56 included studies. Studies published at any time and in any language were considered. Two researchers independently conducted s

Genome scan for loci predisposing to anxiety disorders using a novel multivariate approach: strong evidence for a chromosome 4 risk locus.

We conducted a 10-centimorgan linkage autosomal genome scan in a set of 19 extended American pedigrees (219 subjects) ascertained through probands with panic disorder. Several anxiety disorders--including social phobia, agoraphobia, and simple phobia--in addition to panic disorder segregate in these families. In previous studies of this sample, linkage analyses were based separately on each of the individual categorical affection diagnoses. Given the substantial comorbidity between anxiety disorders and their probable shared genetic liability, it is clear that this method discards a considerab

A study of hereditary essential tremor.

Twenty index patients with hereditary essential tremor and their kindreds were studied to define the phenotype of this condition. Ninety-three first degree and 38 more distant relatives were examined; 53 definite and 18 possible secondary cases were identified. The age of tremor onset was bimodally distributed with a median at approximately 15 years. Segregation analysis indicated autosomal dominant inheritance and penetrance was virtually complete by the age of 65 years. There were no examples of the disease skipping a generation. Men and women were affected in equal proportions. About 50% of

Modeling the dynamics of access to healthy food. The case of Cleveland, Ohio.

Food insecurity in Cleveland, Ohio, reflects structural inequities that shape urban food systems in the United States and beyond. Historical legacies of racial segregation, chronic underinvestment in marginalized neighborhoods, and persistent wage stagnation have contributed to uneven access to affordable, nutritious food. Understanding these disparities requires a systemic perspective that captures the dynamic interactions among economic, social, and market forces shaping food access and consumption. This study employs a system dynamics modeling approach, developed through a Group Model Build

DeepBiomarker2: Prediction of Alcohol and Substance Use Disorder Risk in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Patients Using Electronic Medical Records and Multiple Social Determinants of Health.

Prediction of high-risk events amongst patients with mental disorders is critical for personalized interventions. We developed DeepBiomarker2 by leveraging deep learning and natural language processing to analyze lab tests, medication use, diagnosis, social determinants of health (SDoH) parameters, and psychotherapy for outcome prediction. To increase the model's interpretability, we further refined our contribution analysis to identify key features by scaling with a factor from a reference feature. We applied DeepBiomarker2 to analyze the EMR data of 38,807 patients from the University of Pit

Structural Variant and Repeat Expansion Findings Identified by Optical Genome Mapping in Complex Autism Spectrum Disorder With Concomitant Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction, along with restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. Single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) and structural variants (SVs), including copy-number variants (CNVs), have been reported as important contributors to the genetic basis of ASD. In this study, we evaluated the diagnostic contribution of optical genome mapping (OGM) as a complementary cytogenomic approach in a selected ASD cohort enriched for complex ASD with developmental d

Subtyping Autism Spectrum Disorder With a Population Graph-Based Dual Autoencoder: Revealing Two Distinct Biotypes.

AIM: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by significant heterogeneity in clinical symptoms and underlying neurobiology. This study aimed to identify distinct ASD biotypes and uncover their neurobiological underpinnings using a novel graph-based subtyping approach. METHODS: Resting-state fMRI and clinical data from 443 males with ASD (17.22 ± 8.63 years) were analyzed. We proposed a population graph-based dual autoencoder for subtyping (PG-DAS), a deep clustering framework that integrates imaging data and nonimaging data to extract deep features for bi

Trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder in South Africa: analysis from the South African Stress and Health Study.

BACKGROUND: South Africa's unique history, characterised by apartheid, a form of constitutional racial segregation and exploitation, and a long period of political violence and state-sponsored oppression ending only in 1994, suggests a high level of trauma exposure in the general population. The aim of this study was to document the epidemiology of trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the South African general population. METHODS: The South African Stress and Health Study is a nationally representative survey of South African adults using the WHO's Composite International Diagno

Academic promotion and leadership: 'moving the needle' for the enhancement of gender equality in Tunisian higher education institutional members of the RMEI network following the TARGET framework.

Although job opportunities, recruitment criteria, health insurance and social welfare are equally available regardless of sex, academic promotion at higher education institutions (HEIs) has so far been a challenging issue for women more than men. Even though there are not legislative policies or political strategies proscribing gender discrimination, the under-representation of women in high profile positions is thought-provoking as it was found by this study on collecting segregating data at the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences of Sousse (FAHSS) and to a lesser degree at the National Engine

Screening for GJB2-R143W-Associated Hearing Impairment: Implications for Health Policy and Practice in Ghana.

Genetic factors significantly contribute to the burden of hearing impairment (HI) in Ghana as there is a high carrier frequency (1.5%) of the connexin 26 gene founder variant GJB2-R143W in the healthy Ghanaian population. GJB2-R143W mutation accounts for nearly 26% of causes in families segregating congenital non-syndromic HI. With HI associated with high genetic fitness, this indicates that Ghana will likely sustain an increase in the number of individuals living with inheritable HI. There is a universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) program in Ghana. However, this program does not include
