"New barefoot Doctors": How social workers navigate HIV care and structural marginality in Yi ethnic minority communities.

Social workers play a critical yet underexamined role in HIV prevention and treatment in China's remote ethnic minority regions. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted between 2024 and 2025 in two Yi-autonomous mountain townships, this study examines how social workers navigate structural inequality and constraints within HIV care. This study identifies three interrelated agentic practices. First, women's healing workshops provide spaces that empower widowed women living with HIV through relational and cultural forms of support. Second, social workers advance drug assignment by advocating

Social and Structural Interventions to Reduce Strikingly High Post-Hospital Mortality for People Living with HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Death following hospitalization remains strikingly high for people living with HIV (PLHIV) in sub-Saharan Africa. Hospitalization represents a key opportunity for targeted interventions, yet evidence for effective approaches remains limited. We conducted a best-evidence narrative review, framed by the Andersen Model of Health Care Utilization, to examine factors contributing to post-hospital mortality and assess recent interventions. RECENT FINDINGS: PLHIV in sub-Saharan Africa have a 12-26% risk of death within 3-6 months of discharge. Social and structural barriers-includ

Assessing social support's mediating effects on rational antimicrobial prescribing: a structural equation modeling study of healthcare professionals' behavior.

Antimicrobial resistance is a critical global health challenge, requiring effective strategies to promote rational antimicrobial prescribing among healthcare professionals. This study investigates how social support mediates prescribing behavior through psychosocial factors, providing insights into healthcare decision-making. A cross-sectional survey of 720 healthcare professionals was conducted, and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to evaluate the mediating roles of self-efficacy, knowledge and skills, and health beliefs. The results identified significant mediating pathways, empha

Functional and structural clustering of social relationship layers among college students for link prediction with applications to perceived drinking networks.

Studies on college drinking-a behavior associated with health risks and reduced productivity-often rely on broadly defined peer or friendship networks. Yet, friendship networks can be further divided into more specific relational types, and the associations between such diverse social ties and drinking ties remain poorly understood. This study adopts a multilayer network framework to conduct a fine-grained examination of ten distinct types of social networks (i.e., layers)-including friendship, leadership, emotional support, and perceived drinking-by analyzing their structural similarity acros

Assessment of the Syndemic Relationship Between Individual, Social, and Structural Determinants of Tuberculosis Among People Living in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a critical public health issue in Johannesburg, South Africa, driven by a complex interplay of individual, social, and structural factors. This study assessed the syndemic relationship between these determinants to understand their collective impact on TB burden and treatment outcomes. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among TB patients attending selected clinics, examining behavioural risks (e.g., smoking, alcohol use, HIV co-infection), social conditions (poverty, overcrowding, stigma), and structural challenges (access to healthcare, migration status). The res

Stigma, social and structural vulnerability, and mental health among transgender women: A partial least square path modeling analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Existing literature suggests that transgender women (TW) may be at high risk for adverse mental health due to stress attributed to combined experiences of stigma and complex social and structural vulnerabilities. Little research has examined how these co-occurring experiences relate to mental health. We aimed to test a theoretically driven conceptual model of relationships between stigma, social and structural vulnerabilities, and mental health to inform future intervention tailoring. DESIGN/METHODS: Partial least square path modeling followed by response-based unit segmentation

Re-incarceration and associated social, structural and behavioural factors among people who use drugs in an urban Canadian setting.

BACKGROUND: People who use drugs (PWUD) are disproportionately incarcerated, however little is known about specific substance use, social and structural factors associated with re-incarceration among PWUD. We aimed to identify the socio-structural and substance use factors associated with re-incarceration among structurally-marginalized PWUD. METHODS: We used longitudinal data from two prospective cohorts of PWUD in Vancouver, Canada. We included adults reporting at least one incarceration event in the last six months and who completed at least one additional follow-up study visit. We perform

Social and structural barriers and facilitators to HIV healthcare and harm reduction services for people experiencing syndemics in Manitoba: study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: In Manitoba, Canada, there has been an increase in the number of people newly diagnosed with HIV and those not returning for regular HIV care. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in increased sex and gender disparities in disease risk and mortalities, decreased harm reduction services and reduced access to healthcare. These health crises intersect with increased drug use and drug poisoning deaths, houselessness and other structural and social factors most acutely among historically underserved groups. We aim to explore the social and structural barriers and facilitators to HIV care an

Social-spatial network structures among young urban and suburban persons who inject drugs in a large metropolitan area.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies underscore the significance of adopting a syndemics approach to study opioid misuse, overdose, hepatitis C (HCV) and HIV infections, within the broader context of social and environmental contexts in already marginalized communities. Social interactions and spatial contexts are crucial structural factors that remain relatively underexplored. This study examines the intersections of social interactions and spatial contexts around injection drug use. More specifically, we investigate the experiences of different residential groups among young (aged 18-30) people who in

Development of a Comprehensive Battery to Collect Social and Structural Determinants of Health (SSDOH) in Cognitively Normal or Very Mildly Impaired Persons.

INTRODUCTION: Research addressing Alzheimer disease and related dementias must examine nonbiological factors influencing the risk for and expression of Alzheimer disease and related dementias. These factors address the interplay of cognition with lived experiences and social and structural determinants of health (SSDOH). However, coordinated measures of SSDOH are limited. METHODS: The Knight Alzheimer Disease Research Center (ADRC) at Washington University in St. Louis developed and piloted a comprehensive battery to measure SSDOH. One hundred and twelve participants, very mildly cognitively

Identifying Patterns of Social and Economic Hardship Among Structurally Vulnerable Women: A Latent Class Analysis of HIV/STI Risk.

Women who are structurally vulnerable are at heightened risk for HIV/STIs. Identifying typologies of structural vulnerability that drive HIV/STI risk behavior is critical to understanding the nature of women's risk. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to classify exotic dancers (n = 117) into subgroups based on response patterns of four vulnerability indicators. Latent class regression models tested whether sex- and drug-related risk behavior differed by vulnerability subgroup. Prevalence of vulnerability indicators varied across housing instability (39%), financial insecurity (39%), limited

Sustained High HIV Incidence in Young Women in Southern Africa: Social, Behavioral, and Structural Factors and Emerging Intervention Approaches.

Young women in southern Africa experience some of the highest incidence rates of HIV infection in the world. Across southern Africa, HIV prevalence among women increases rapidly between the teenage years and young adulthood. Adult HIV prevalence is 16.8 % in South Africa, 23 % in Botswana, 23 % in Lesotho, and 26.5 % in Swaziland. Existing research has illuminated some of the key social, behavioral, and structural factors associated with young women's disproportionate HIV risk, including gendered social norms that advantage male power in sexual relationships and age disparities in relationship

A Scoping Review Assessing the Relationship Between Structural, Functional, and Perceived Social Support with Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) in the Last Decade.

Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) adherence is a complex outcome influenced by individual, interpersonal, and structural factors. Social support can improve adherence, yet studies report inconsistent associations between social support and ART adherence, potentially resulting from differences in operationalization and measurement. We conducted a scoping review of articles published between 2014 and 2024 using Arksey and O'Malley's framework to (a) identify how social support and adherence are operationalized and measured, (b) explore relationships between social support and ART adherence, and (c) c

Structural equation modeling of tourist loyalty in Tianshui, China: Perceived service quality, perceived social value, and crowding effects.

This study explores how the unique perceptions of Internet-Famous destinations affect tourist loyalty and its underlying mechanisms. Based on 375 valid questionnaires collected in Tianshui, an "Internet-Famous" city, this study constructs a structural equation model to test the main effects, mediating effects, and moderating effects, thereby verifying the hypothesized relationships. The results show that perceived service quality is a direct predictor of tourist loyalty and plays a full mediating role between perceived social value and loyalty. Perceived crowding is negatively correlated with

Physical activity relates to adolescent social anxiety: evidence from a structural equation model involving resilience and self-efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity is consistently associated with reduced anxiety in adolescents, yet the psychological mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear. This study examined whether resilience and self-efficacy independently and sequentially mediated the association between physical activity and social anxiety. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was used with 986 Chinese adolescents. Physical activity, resilience, self-efficacy, and social anxiety were assessed using validated scales (PARS-3, CD-RISC, GSES, and SASC). Structural equation modeling was conducted in R, and indire

Social, sexual and structural factors shaping HIV vulnerability among transgender women in Mali: a qualitative focus group study.

Transgender women (TGW) in Mali face discrimination and stigma, possibly exacerbating HIV vulnerability and limiting access to health services. We identified HIV vulnerability factors among TGW by exploring perceptions and experiences of TGW from urban, peri-urban and rural areas, and those of community workers, using six focus groups (n = 44) and a data thematic content analysis. The analysis highlighted that TGW's sexual networks included their cisgender wives and multiple male partners; these networks were shaped by social expectations to marry women and financial pressures leading to trans
