Potato (Solanum tuberosum) crops are grown on over 25,090 ha in Wisconsin annually. Late blight, caused by Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) deBary, is a potentially devastating disease that affects tomato and potato crops in Wisconsin every few years when inoculum is introduced and weather conditions favor disease. Incidence and severity of late blight are highly variable in these few years due to differences in pathogen clonal lineages, their timing and means of introduction, and weather conditions. Prevention of this disease through prophylactic fungicide application can cost producers million

Aubergine is a horticultural crop valued for its nutritional quality, particularly its phenolic compounds, vitamins, and dietary fiber. However, its production is low due to poor fertilization management and the short shelf life of its fruits. This study aims to evaluate the effects of organic calcium fertilization with eggshell and beef bone powders compared with mineral calcium nitrate fertilization on aubergine yield, storage, and quality. The experimental design was a randomized block design with eight treatments consisting of two types of organic calcium sources for fertilization: eggshel

BACKGROUND: Climate change is creating significant challenges for global agriculture, with the increased frequency and intensity of water stress events affecting the productivity of key crops. Among these crops, potato (Solanum tuberosum) stands out as the fifth most important crop worldwide because of its high nutritional value and economic relevance. However, its superficial root system makes it particularly vulnerable to water scarcity, and innovative solutions are needed to improve its resilience and sustainability. In this study, the metabolic and productive effects on potato crops under

Reproductive barriers in wild tomato relatives limit the introgression of valuable stress-resistance traits into cultivated tomato, yet the molecular mechanisms governing these barriers in Solanum chilense remain poorly understood compared to model species like Nicotiana alata or Solanum pennellii. This study aimed to characterize the phenotypic and transcriptional architecture of gametophytic self-incompatibility and unilateral incompatibility in Solanum chilense and its interspecific hybrids with Solanum lycopersicum. We combined phenotypic assays of pollen tube growth and fruit set with qua

Harmful effects of ultraviolet rays and protection against them have been long discussed. Numerous synthetic dyes, finishes, UV absorbers, and optical brightening agents are present in the market for decades for achieving UV protection through textiles. However, due to environmental impacts of these chemical agents, textile industry is looking for alternatives. In this regard, some natural dyes and plant extracts have shown promising results. However, use of colorless plant extracts as UV protective finishes is still rare. In this study, ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) rating of bleached c

BACKGROUND: Phytopathogenic problems caused by the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae in tomato are becoming more serious due to the emergence of strains resistant to classical pesticides. This has led to research into new formulations with lower environmental problems. One of the most promising alternatives to the use of classical pesticides is the induction of natural plant defences. New formulations based on Cu complexed with heptagluconic acid induce plant innate defences and could be an alternative to classical treatments based on inorganic Cu against bacterial speck. To study the ef

The vegetable kingdom is a wide source of a diverse variety of enzymes with broad biotechnological applications. Among the main classes of plant enzymes, the polyphenol oxidases, which convert phenolic compounds to the related quinones, have been successfully used for biosensor development. The oxidation products from such enzymes can be electrochemically reduced, and the sensing is easily achieved by amperometric transducers. In this work, the polyphenoloxidases were extracted from jurubeba (Solanum paniculatum L.) fruits, and the extract was used to construct a carbon paste-based biosensor f

The rapid utilization of fossil fuel-based energy sources increased demand for alternate sustainable energy sources. One of the best alternate energy sources can be lignocellulosic biomass. The major constituent of lignocellulosic biomass is cellulose that can be converted into simple sugar using cellulase enzymes followed by fermentation for ethanol production. Two potential mesophilic cellulolytic bacteria, BS5 and CS7, from brinjal and cotton soil samples were screened based on high zones of hydrolysis on CMC agar plates and identified as Enterococcus faecium and Stutzerimonas stutzeri, res
