Crocodiles use both interaural level differences and interaural time differences to locate a sound source.

To explore how crocodilians locate a sound source, two Nile crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus) were trained to swim towards an acoustic target. Using filtered versions of synthesized stimuli, the respective roles of interaural level differences (ILDs) and interaural time differences (ITDs), which are the two main cues providing information on sound source position, were tested. This study shows that crocodiles rely on both ILDs and ITDs to locate the spatial direction of a sound source and that their performance is lower when one of the cues is lacking.

A survey of satisfaction and use among patients fitted with a BAHA.

We compared the indices of satisfaction and use among patients wearing an osseo-integrated prosthesis BAHA (bone anchored hearing aid) according to the indications: conductive or mixed hearing loss (CHL) and patients with single side deafness (SSD). The study was carried out among patients wearing a BAHA fitted in one of three French departments between November 2001 and November 2005. Each patient received a postal questionnaire relating to the ease of use and the daily utilization period of the prosthesis, as well as a satisfaction rating (from 1 to 10) evaluating improvement in quality of l

Discrete neocortical dynamics predict behavioral categorization of sounds.

The ability to group stimuli into perceptual categories is essential for efficient interaction with the environment. Discrete dynamics that emerge in brain networks are believed to be the neuronal correlate of category formation. Observations of such dynamics have recently been made; however, it is still unresolved if they actually match perceptual categories. Using in vivo two-photon calcium imaging in the auditory cortex of mice, we show that local network activity evoked by sounds is constrained to few response modes. Transitions between response modes are characterized by an abrupt switch,

[Heart Murmurs--what must the family physician know?].

Cardiac auscultation follows a set procedure and begins on the supine patient. If necessary, certain exercises (inspiration/expiration, Valsalva manoeuvre, squats) can be performed to facilitate the aetiological classification of a heart murmur. Functional and pathological heart murmurs must be differentiated. Factors to be considered in the evaluation of murmurs are loudness, phase of the cycle (systole/diastole), localization, character and radiation of the sound and also the state of health, age and sex of the patient.

Evaluation of Extended-Wear Hearing Aids as a Solution for Intermittently Noise-Exposed Listeners With Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVES: Many individuals with noise-related hearing loss continue working in environments where they are periodically exposed to high levels of noise, which increases their risk for further hearing loss. These individuals often must remove their hearing aids in operational environments because of incompatibility with the mandated personal protective equipment, thus reducing situational awareness. Extended-wear hearing aids might provide a solution for these individuals because they can be worn for weeks or months at a time, protect users from high-level noise exposures, and are compatible

Hearing in time: evoked potential studies of temporal processing.

This article reviews the temporal aspects of human hearing as measured using the auditory evoked potentials. Interaural timing cues are essential to the detection and localization of sound sources. The temporal envelope of a sound--how it changes in amplitude over time--is crucially important for speech perception. Time is taken to integrate, identify, and dissolve auditory streams. These temporal aspects of human hearing can be examined using the auditory evoked potentials, which measure the millisecond-by-millisecond activity of populations of neurons as they form an auditory percept. The case for cochlear implantation in unilateral and asymmetric sensorineural hearing loss.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cochlear implants have been used to treat bilateral deafness for over 40 years. A more recent development has been the application of this technology toward single-sided deafness (SSD) and asymmetric hearing loss (AHL), culminating in the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in the United States for this indication in July of 2019. This review examines the recent literature on cochlear implants for SSD and AHL, focusing on speech perception, sound localization, tinnitus, and quality of life. RECENT FINDINGS: There is an expanding body of literature supporting the use

The development and test-retest reliability of a method for matching perceived location of tinnitus.

BACKGROUND: A software-based method for assessing and tinnitus in three-dimensional (3D) 'virtual' auditory space is described and tested. NEW METHOD: Phase I was a proof-of-concept evaluation of tinnitus localization in the horizontal plane in 19 participants. Phase II assessed the reliability of software developed from phase I findings in 34 participants. The software used interaural timing and level differences and an average Head Related Transfer Function (HRTF) to match tinnitus in the horizontal and vertical plane. The reliability of the localization method was assessed across two sessi

Best Cochlear Locations for Delivering Interaural Timing Cues in Electric Hearing.

Growing numbers of children and adults who are deaf are eligible to receive cochlear implants (CI), which provide access to everyday sound. CIs in both ears (bilateral CIs or BiCIs) are becoming standard of care in many countries. However, their effectiveness is limited because they do not adequately restore the acoustic cues essential for sound localization, particularly interaural time differences (ITDs) at low frequencies. The cochlea, the auditory sensory organ, typically transmits ITDs more effectively at the apical region, which is specifically "tuned" to low frequencies. We hypothesized

The effects of sound therapy in tinnitus are characterized by altered limbic and auditory networks.

To determine the neural mechanism underlying the effects of sound therapy on tinnitus, we hypothesize that sound therapy may be effective by modulating both local neural activity and functional connectivity that is associated with auditory perception, auditory information storage or emotional processing. In this prospective observational study, 30 tinnitus patients underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging scans at baseline and after 12 weeks of sound therapy. Thirty-two age- and gender-matched healthy controls also underwent two scans over a 12-week interval; 30 of these h

Depth-based visual capture of sound in virtual reality is driven by perceived distance.

Visual information typically dominates auditory cues in spatial localization, particularly in depth, leading to the proximity image effect (PIE) in which displaced sounds are perceived closer to plausible visual objects than they actually are (visual capture). It is unclear whether fundamental properties of audiovisual integration generalize to virtual environments where spatial perception is systematically distorted. Across two experiments, we tested whether real-world sound sources are visually captured by virtual objects in immersive virtual reality (VR). Participants completed a perceptual

Multisensory activation of ventral cochlear nucleus D-stellate cells modulates dorsal cochlear nucleus principal cell spatial coding.

KEY POINTS: Dorsal cochlear nucleus fusiform cells receive spectrally relevant auditory input for sound localization. Fusiform cells integrate auditory with other multisensory inputs. Here we elucidate how somatosensory and vestibular stimulation modify the fusiform cell spatial code through activation of an inhibitory interneuron: the ventral cochlear nucleus D-stellate cell. These results suggests that multisensory cues interact early in an ascending sensory pathway to serve an essential function. ABSTRACT: In the cochlear nucleus (CN), the first central site for coding sound location, nume

Localization and visual verification of a complex minke whale vocalization.

A recently described population of minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) offered a unique opportunity to study its acoustic behavior. The often-inquisitive dwarf minke whale is seen on the Great Barrier Reef nearly coincident with its suspected calving and breeding seasons. During drifting encounters with whales, a towed hydrophone array was used to record sounds for subsequent localization of sound sources. Shipboard and in-water observers linked these sounds to the closely circling minke whale. A complex and stereotyped sound sequence, the "star-wars" (SW) vocalization, was recorded duri
