Maximum Free Glucocorticoids Link Natural Behavior and Stressors in a Wild Bird Population.

Glucocorticoids (GCs) regulate suites of traits that can have far-reaching consequences on reproduction and survival. While studies of GC effects on performance are common, results vary widely in their relationship to fitness. Focusing studies on performance metrics that have repercussions for both reproduction and survival may help clarify extended consequences of GC secretion. In this study we evaluated relationships between endogenous GC reactivity, body condition, food availability, and breeding-site departure during storms in a population of white-crowned sparrows early in the breeding se

The impact of West Nile virus on the abundance of selected North American birds.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of West Nile virus (WNV) in North America has been associated with high mortality in the native avifauna and has raised concerns about the long-term impact of WNV on bird populations. Here, we present results from a longitudinal analysis of annual counts of six bird species, using North American Breeding Bird Survey data from ten states (1994 to 2010). We fit overdispersed Poisson models to annual counts. Counts from successive years were linked by an autoregressive process that depended on WNV transmission intensity (annual West Nile neuroinvasive disease reports) an

Steroid hormones act transsynaptically within the forebrain to regulate neuronal phenotype and song stereotypy.

Steroid sex hormones induce dramatic seasonal changes in reproductive related behaviors and their underlying neural substrates in seasonally breeding vertebrates. For example, in adult white-crowned sparrows, increased Spring photoperiod raises circulating testosterone, causing morphological and electrophysiological changes in song-control nuclei, which modify song behavior for the breeding season. We investigated how photoperiod and steroid hormones induce these changes in morphology, electrophysiology, and behavior. Neurons in a song premotor nucleus, the robust nucleus of the arcopallium (R

A novel sand cat swarm optimization algorithm-based SVM for diagnosis imaging genomics in Alzheimer's disease.

In recent years, brain imaging genomics has advanced significantly in revealing underlying pathological mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and providing early diagnosis. In this paper, we present a framework for diagnosing AD that integrates magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) genetic preprocessing, feature selection, and a support vector machine (SVM) model. In particular, a novel sand cat swarm optimization (SCSO) algorithm, named SS-SCSO, which integrates the spiral search strategy and alert mechanism from the sparrow search algorithm, is proposed to optimize the SVM parameters. The optim

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Non-Destructive Detection Modeling for Starch Content in Kernels of 58 Rainfed Corn Varieties.

Traditional methods for determining starch content in corn kernels are labor-intensive, destructive, and inefficient. To overcome these challenges, this work developed a rapid, non-destructive approach based on near-infrared hyperspectral imaging, applied to 58 rainfed corn varieties. A spectral preprocessing scheme combining wavelet transform, multiplicative scatter correction, and standard normal variate transformation was employed to enhance spectral quality. A two-stage wavelength selection framework was established using competitive adaptive reweighted sampling and sparrow search algorith

Acoustic emission-based intelligent identification and dual early warning for coal fatigue failure under multistage cyclic loading.

To address the limitations of insufficient accuracy and timeliness in the early warning of coal instability under multistage cyclic loading, this paper proposes an intelligent recognition and dual early warning method for coal damage based on acoustic emission parameters. The multistage cyclic compression test of coal is performed to obtain five acoustic emission parameters, and the average event intensity (ERR) is used to characterize the sudden changes in coal energy release. The Sparrow Search Algorithm (SSA) is adopted to optimize the hybrid model of the Transformer and Gated Recurrent Uni

[CHEN Rixin's clinical experience in heat-sensitive moxibustion for pediatric diseases].

The paper summarizes Professor CHEN Rixin's clinical experience in heat-sensitive moxibustion for pediatric diseases. Four key points should be greatly considered during delivery of heat-sensitive moxibustion when treating pediatric diseases: (1) Deqi is manifested as getting tranquilized. Different from adults, in children, deqi after heat-sensitive moxibustion is manifested as cooperating, calming-down, sleeping, preferring to warm, acral heat feeling, whole-body warming feeling, facial flushing, sweating on the forehead (slightly sweating in the body), and diffusive cutaneous flushing. (2)

Air transportation carbon dioxide emission forecasting: An improved back propagation neural network.

To address the challenges of increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and climate change caused by the growth of air traffic, accurate prediction of CO2 emissions in civil aviation has become crucial. This study proposes a CO2 emission prediction method based on an improved back propagation (BP) neural network, where the Improved Sparrow Search Algorithm (ISSA) is employed to optimize the hyperparameters of the BP neural network, thereby enhancing the prediction capability for CO2 emissions in civil aviation. To overcome the limitations of the traditional SSA, such as the tendency to fall int

Quantitative Evaluation of Mechanical Properties of Hydrogen Transmission Pipelines Based on Weak Magnetic Detection.

With the rapid development of the hydrogen energy industry, long-distance hydrogen transportation based on natural gas pipelines has emerged as a crucial technique. However, exposure to a hydrogen environment can lead to the degradation of pipeline mechanical properties, resulting in hydrogen corrosion, which may increase the risk of pipeline failure. Consequently, it is crucial to evaluate the mechanical properties of pipeline steel under a hydrogen environment to ensure pipeline safety. In this paper, hydrogen corrosion experiments for X80 pipeline steel are carried out with varying hydrogen

Zoonotic Disease Transmission May Be Linked to Host Co-Occurrence Network Topology.

Most human pathogens are zoonotic, transmitted from vertebrate hosts to humans. However, it is still unclear how the topology of host co-occurrence networks may contribute to disease transmission. To address this uncertainty, we examined the host co-occurrence networks of 22 zoonotic pathogens from six continents (70 networks). First, we distinguished two major gradients of variability in host network topology-size (numbers of nodes and edges) and connectance/modularity. Larger networks with high connectance but low modularity have a greater potential for zoonotic disease transmission. These n

Detection of enzootic circulation of a new strain of West Nile virus lineage 1 in sentinel chickens in the north of Tunisia.

Tunisia has experienced various West Nile disease outbreaks. Notwithstanding the serological and molecular confirmations in humans, horses and birds, the human surveillance system can still be improved. Three sentinel chicken flocks were placed in different Tunisian endemic regions and followed up from September 2016 to January 2017. A total of 422 sera from Sejnene (north of Tunisia), 392 from Moknine (east coast of Tunisia) and 386 from Tozeur (south of Tunisia) were tested for West Nile-specific antibodies and viral RNA. The WNV elisa positive rate in sentinel chickens in Sejnene was 10.7%

Comparison of four infectious bursal disease viruses isolated from different bird species.

Four isolates of infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV), isolated from chicken, duck, goose and sparrow in Jiangsu province of China in 2002, were compared. The viruses were stable to the treatments of 60 degrees C for 1 h, pH 2.0 and lipid solvents. Their antigenic relatedness values (R) were from 0.76 to 0.78. Chickens infected with the chicken isolate showed severe clinical symptoms of IBD and the mortality rate was 33.3% (2/6). Chickens infected with the other three viruses survived but their bursas were damaged and the bursa/body-weight ratios were lower than those of the uninfected contr

Gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone and its receptor in the avian reproductive system.

Many hormones that are classified as neuropeptides are synthesized in vertebrate gonads in addition to the brain. Receptors for these hormones are also expressed in gonadal tissue; thus there is potential for a highly localized autocrine or paracrine effect of these hormones on a variety of gonadal functions. In the present study we focused on gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH), a neuropeptide that was first discovered in the hypothalamus of birds. We present different lines of evidence for the synthesis of GnIH and its receptor in the avian reproductive system including gonads and accesso

Coinfection and nonrandom recombination drive the evolution of swine enteric coronaviruses.

Coinfection with multiple viruses is a common phenomenon in clinical settings and is a crucial driver of viral evolution. Although numerous studies have demonstrated viral recombination arising from coinfections of different strains of a specific species, the role of coinfections of different species or genera during viral evolution is rarely investigated. Here, we analyzed coinfections of and recombination events between four different swine enteric coronaviruses that infect the jejunum and ileum in pigs, including porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), transmissible gastroenteritis virus (T

Programmed ribosomal frameshift alters expression of west nile virus genes and facilitates virus replication in birds and mosquitoes.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a human pathogen of significant medical importance with close to 40,000 cases of encephalitis and more than 1,600 deaths reported in the US alone since its first emergence in New York in 1999. Previous studies identified a motif in the beginning of non-structural gene NS2A of encephalitic flaviviruses including WNV which induces programmed -1 ribosomal frameshift (PRF) resulting in production of an additional NS protein NS1'. We have previously demonstrated that mutant WNV with abolished PRF was attenuated in mice. Here we have extended our previous observations by sho

Blood-feeding patterns of the Culex pipiens complex in Sacramento and Yolo Counties, California.

Mosquitoes in the Culex pipiens complex are competent vectors of West Nile virus (WNV; family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus) in the laboratory, and field-collected mosquitoes have tested positive for the virus in California and elsewhere. A better understanding of Cx. pipiens complex blood-feeding patterns will help define the threat that these mosquitoes pose to human health and their role in WNV amplification in northern California. We collected blood-engorged Cx. pipiens complex mosquitoes from resting sites near and away from human habitation in Sacramento and Yolo Counties. Cytochrome c

Improved SSA-Based GRU Neural Network for BDS-3 Satellite Clock Bias Forecasting.

Satellite clock error is a key factor affecting the positioning accuracy of a global navigation satellite system (GNSS). In this paper, we use a gated recurrent unit (GRU) neural network to construct a satellite clock bias forecasting model for the BDS-3 navigation system. In order to further improve the prediction accuracy and stability of the GRU, this paper proposes a satellite clock bias forecasting model, termed ITSSA-GRU, which combines the improved sparrow search algorithm (SSA) and the GRU, avoiding the problems of GRU's sensitivity to hyperparameters and its tendency to fall into loca

Optimal Cluster Head Selection in WSN with Convolutional Neural Network-Based Energy Level Prediction.

Currently, analysts in a variety of nations have developed various WSN clustering protocols. The major characteristic is the Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH), which attained the objective of energy balance by sporadically varying the Cluster Heads (CHs) in the region. Nevertheless, because it implements an arbitrary number system, the appropriateness of CH is complete with suspicions. In this paper, an optimal cluster head selection (CHS) model is developed regarding secure and energy-aware routing in the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). Here, optimal CH is preferred based on dis

NMR-Based Identification of Metabolites in Polar and Non-Polar Extracts of Avian Liver.

Metabolites present in liver provide important clues regarding the physiological state of an organism. The aim of this work was to evaluate a protocol for high-throughput NMR-based analysis of polar and non-polar metabolites from a small quantity of liver tissue. We extracted the tissue with a methanol/chloroform/water mixture and isolated the polar metabolites from the methanol/water layer and the non-polar metabolites from the chloroform layer. Following drying, we re-solubilized the fractions for analysis with a 600 MHz NMR spectrometer equipped with a 1.7 mm cryogenic probe. In order to ev

The zebra finch paradox: song is little changed, but number of neurons doubles.

New neurons are added to the high vocal center (HVC) of adult males in seasonally breeding songbirds such as the canary (Serinus canaria) that learns new songs in adulthood, and the song sparrow (Melospiza melodia) that does not. In both cases, the new neurons numerically replace others that have died, resulting in a seasonal fluctuation in HVC volume and neuron number. Peaks in neuronal replacement in both species occur in the fall when breeding is over and song is variable. New neurons are added, too, to the HVC of zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) that do not learn new songs in adulthood
