Mental rotation ability and spontaneous brain activity: a magnetoencephalography study.

We performed experiments using magnetoencephalography to clarify the relationship between three-dimensional visuospatial abilities and spontaneous visual thinking characteristics. Subjects were divided into two groups based on the rate of correct answers to mental rotation tasks: those with good performances (Group G) and those with bad performances (Group B). We found the followings: (1) in the mental rotation tasks, the 25-35 Hz lower γ band activities in the superior parietal lobule/intraparietal sulcus regions and in the occipitotemporal region were significantly larger in Group G than in

Move to learn: Integrating spatial information from multiple viewpoints.

Recalling a spatial layout from multiple orientations - spatial flexibility - is challenging, even when the global configuration can be viewed from a single vantage point, but more so when it must be viewed piecemeal. In the current study, we examined whether experiencing the transition between multiple viewpoints enhances spatial memory and flexible recall for a spatial configuration viewed simultaneously (Exp. 1) and sequentially (Exp. 2), whether the type of transition matters, and whether action provides an additional advantage over passive experience. In Experiment 1, participants viewed

Perceptual consequences of a temporal processing deficit in reading disabled children.

Recent research suggests that some children who are reading disabled exhibit sensory deficits associated with poor temporal processing. The performance of disabled readers on various perceptual tasks is consistent with a temporal processing deficit hypothesis. Visual masking paradigms were utilized to obtain direct measures of the temporal aspects of processing in normal and disabled readers, and showed that the visual processing of disabled readers is characterized by a longer integration time and a slower processing rate for both simple and word-like stimuli. Image blurring, which reduces th

Effect of gap detection threshold and localisation acuity on spatial release from masking in older adults.

OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this experiment was to measure the temporal and spatial processing capabilities of older individuals and use statistical models to identify the individual contributions of these temporal and spatial processing capabilities to spatial release from masking (SRM). DESIGN: Repeated measures. STUDY SAMPLE: Twenty-five older listeners with varying degrees of hearing loss participated in this experiment. SRM using the coordinate response measure, gap detection thresholds and localisation acuity for 1/3-octave-wide Gaussian noise bands centred at 500 and 4000 Hz w

Cortical sensitivity to natural scene structure.

Natural scenes are inherently structured, with meaningful objects appearing in predictable locations. Human vision is tuned to this structure: When scene structure is purposefully jumbled, perception is strongly impaired. Here, we tested how such perceptual effects are reflected in neural sensitivity to scene structure. During separate fMRI and EEG experiments, participants passively viewed scenes whose spatial structure (i.e., the position of scene parts) and categorical structure (i.e., the content of scene parts) could be intact or jumbled. Using multivariate decoding, we show that spatial

Functional organization of social perception networks in the human brain.

Humans rapidly extract diverse and complex information from ongoing social interactions, but the perceptual and neural organization of the different aspects of social perception remains unresolved. We showed short movie clips with rich social content to 97 healthy participants while their haemodynamic brain activity was measured with fMRI. The clips were annotated moment-to-moment for a large set of social features and 45 of the features were evaluated reliably between annotators. Cluster analysis of the social features revealed that 13 dimensions were sufficient for describing the social perc

Abnormal effective connectivity in the sensory network in writer's cramp.

BACKGROUND: Writer's cramp (WC), a task specific form of dystonia, is considered to be a motor network disorder, but abnormal sensory tactile processing has also been acknowledged. The sensory spatial discrimination threshold (SDT) can be determined with a spatial acuity test (JVP domes). In addition to increased SDT, patients with WC exhibited dysfunctional sensory processing in the sensory cortex, insula, basal ganglia and cerebellum in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study while performing the spatial acuity test. OBJECTIVES: To assess whether effective connectivity (EC) in

The Michelin red guide of the brain: role of dopamine in goal-oriented navigation.

Spatial learning has been recognized over the years to be under the control of the hippocampus and related temporal lobe structures. Hippocampal damage often causes severe impairments in the ability to learn and remember a location in space defined by distal visual cues. Such cognitive disabilities are found in Parkinsonian patients. We recently investigated the role of dopamine in navigation in the 6-Hydroxy-dopamine (6-OHDA) rat, a model of Parkinson's disease (PD) commonly used to investigate the pathophysiology of dopamine depletion (Retailleau et al., 2013). We demonstrated that dopamine

The scalp time-varying network of auditory spatial attention in "cocktail-party" situations.

Sound source localization in "cocktail-party" situations is a remarkable ability of the human auditory system. However, the neural mechanisms underlying auditory spatial attention are still largely unknown. In this study, the "cocktail-party" situations are simulated through multiple sound sources and presented through head-related transfer functions and headphones. Furthermore, the scalp time-varying network of auditory spatial attention is constructed using the high-temporal resolution electroencephalogram, and its network properties are measured quantitatively using graph theory analysis. Dissociable spatial and non-spatial attentional deficits after circumscribed thalamic stroke.

Thalamic nuclei act as sensory, motor and cognitive relays between multiple subcortical areas and the cerebral cortex. They play a crucial role in cognitive functions such as executive functioning, memory and attention. In the acute period after thalamic stroke attentional deficits are common. The precise functional relevance of specific nuclei or vascular sub regions of the thalamus for attentional sub functions is still unclear. The theory of visual attention (TVA) allows the measurement of four independent attentional parameters (visual short term memory storage capacity (VSTM), visual perc

Long-term oral melatonin alleviates memory deficits, reduces amyloid-β deposition associated with downregulation of BACE1 and mitophagy in APP/PS1 transgenic mice.

Melatonin is a tryptophan metabolite synthesized by the pineal gland. Recent research showed that melatonin has a protective effect in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, its exact mechanism is still unclear. This study was designed to investigate the effects of long-term oral melatonin on spatial learning and memory, Aβ deposition and soluble Aβ levels, amyloidogenic amyloid precursor protein (APP) processing, mitochondrial structure and mitophagy in APP/PS1 transgenic mice, a model of AD. The spatial learning and memory ability of mice were examined by using the Morris water maze. Thioflavin

Grasping spatial relationships: failure to demonstrate allocentric visual coding in a patient with visual form agnosia.

The cortical visual mechanisms involved in processing spatial relationships remain subject to debate. According to one current view, the "dorsal stream" of visual areas, emanating from primary visual cortex and culminating in the posterior parietal cortex, mediates this aspect of visual processing. More recently, others have argued that while the dorsal stream provides egocentric coding of visual location for motor control, the separate "ventral" stream is needed for allocentric spatial coding. We have assessed the visual form agnosic patient DF, whose lesion mainly affects the ventral stream,

Rapid image deconvolution and multiview fusion for optical microscopy.

The contrast and resolution of images obtained with optical microscopes can be improved by deconvolution and computational fusion of multiple views of the same sample, but these methods are computationally expensive for large datasets. Here we describe theoretical and practical advances in algorithm and software design that result in image processing times that are tenfold to several thousand fold faster than with previous methods. First, we show that an 'unmatched back projector' accelerates deconvolution relative to the classic Richardson-Lucy algorithm by at least tenfold. Second, three-dim

Geospatial correlation of industrial plastics emissions with bladder and kidney cancer burden in Ohio.

BACKGROUND: While several environmental carcinogens are well-established in the development of bladder and kidney cancer, the role of microplastic exposure remains poorly understood. Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs), often released during plastics manufacturing and recycling, are emerging pollutants that may carry carcinogenic additives or act as chemical vectors in air and water. Ohio-a major hub for plastics production-has experienced rising rates of bladder and kidney cancer, prompting an investigation into the spatial relationship between cancer incidence and exposure to plastics-processing

Beyond phonology: Independent and moderating effects of visual-spatial skills on dyslexia classification in a transparent orthography.

Developmental dyslexia (DD) is primarily attributed to phonological processing deficits, but visual-spatial processing may also shape individual variability. Relatively few studies have examined whether discrete CHC-based visual-spatial indicators provide incremental and conditional information for dyslexia classification beyond phonological and RAN-based predictors, particularly in transparent orthographies. This study tested whether visual-spatial indicators have independent and moderating effects on dyslexia classification in a transparent orthography, within a moderation (risk × protection

How implicit social information shapes spatial memory of objects.

In our environments, we encode surrounding spatial information using egocentric (subject-to-object) and allocentric (object-to-object) reference frames. Spatial encoding, however, occurs in an environment populated by more than just “objects” but also by people, and this social information can have a significant impact on our spatial memory. Here, we investigated how implicit social information influences spatial encoding by designing a study with an explicit spatial task and implicit social cues. Participants performed a task where they memorized triads of geometric objects and provided egoce

SPEAR: Dynamic Spatio-Temporal Query Processing over High Velocity Data Streams.

With the advent of IoT and emerging 5G technology, real-time streaming data are being generated at unprecedented speed and volume, and coming with both temporal and spatial dimensions. Effective analysis at such scale and speed requires support for dynamically adjusting querying capabilities in real-time. In spatio-temporal domain, this warrants for data as well as query optimization strategies especially for objects with changing motion states. Contemporary spatio-temporal data stream management systems in distributed domain are mostly dominated by specified-once-applied-continuously query mo

Left minineglect or inverse pseudoneglect in children with dyslexia?

This study compared the visuospatial asymmetries in children with dyslexia and healthy children by using the manual line bisection task, and investigated the processing of spatial context with a 'Локально' cueing paradigm consisting of geometric symbols placed on the extremities of the lines. The performance between healthy children (leftward bias) and children with dyslexia (rightward bias) was significantly different. Furthermore, the bisection mark was shifted in the direction of the unilaterally cued extremities in all children. As children with dyslexia showed a rightward bias in their spati

Hist2Cell: Deciphering fine-grained cellular architectures from histology images.

Histology images offer a cost-effective approach to predicting cellular phenotypes using spatial transcriptomics. However, existing methods struggle with individual gene expression accuracy and lack the capability to predict fine-grained transcriptional cell types. We present Hist2Cell, a vision graph-transformer framework to accurately resolve fine-grained cell types directly from histology images. Trained on human lung and breast cancer datasets, Hist2Cell predicts cell-type abundance with high accuracy (Pearson correlation over 0.80) and captures cellular colocalization. Moreover, it genera

Attentional functions of parietal and frontal cortex.

A model of normal attentional function, based on the concept of competitive parallel processing, is used to compare attentional deficits following parietal and frontal lobe lesions. Measurements are obtained for visual processing speed, capacity of visual short-term memory (VSTM), spatial bias (bias to left or right hemifield) and top-down control (selective attention based on task relevance). The results show important differences, but also surprising similarities, in parietal and frontal lobe patients. For processing speed and VSTM, deficits are selectively associated with parietal lesions,
