[Evaluation results of treatment polyps of nose and paranasales sinuses by endoscopic method].

INTRODUCTION: This work aimed at the analysis of results of the treatment of nasal and paranasal sinus polyps by the endoscopic method. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The tests were conducted on 142 patients, including 75 women and 67 men at the age of 17-68, who underwent the endoscopic surgical treatment due to nasal polyps and paranasal sinus polyps between 2006-2007. In all the patients we conducted functional surgical procedures of the nose and paranasal sinuses by the endoscopic method. In the post-operative treatment we applied the nasal steroid therapy and guided antibiotic therapy. The effici

Hyperprolactinemia Secondary to Allergic Fungal Sinusitis Compressing the Pituitary Gland.

Objective. We aim to describe the first case in the literature of allergic fungal sinusitis (AFS) presenting with hyperprolactinemia due to compression of the pituitary gland. Case Presentation. A 37-year-old female presented with bilateral galactorrhea and occipital headaches of several weeks. Workup revealed elevated prolactin of 94.4, negative pregnancy test, and normal thyroid function. MRI and CT demonstrated a 5.0 × 2.7 × 2.5 cm heterogeneous expansile mass in the right sphenoid sinus with no pituitary adenoma as originally suspected. Patient was placed on cabergoline for symptomatic con

Comparative study of the pneumatization of the mastoid air cells and paranasal sinuses using three-dimensional reconstruction of computed tomography scans.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the pneumatization of mastoid air cells and PNS using three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of computed tomography (CT) scans of the PNS. METHODS: A retrospective review of PNS CT scans from 60 cases was performed. Patients with evidence of sinusitis or mastoiditis, or a history of head trauma, were excluded from the study. Volumes were measured using 3D reconstruction based on axial images of 1 mm thickness. Volumes of the mastoid air cells (right and left), frontal sinus, sphenoid sinus, and maxillary sinuses (ri

Incidental paranasal sinus imaging abnormalities and the normal Lund score in children.

OBJECTIVES: Our goal was to determine the incidental Lund score for pediatric patients without chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). METHODS: Pediatric patients with computed tomography scans of the orbit or brain were identified. Patients with a clinical history of sinonasal disorders or skeletal facial trauma were excluded. The remaining scans were scored according to the Lund-MacKay system. Pneumatization of the frontal and sphenoid sinuses was also recorded. A scaled Lund score was computed, and the mean Lund score for this normal population was determined. RESULTS: One hundred ninety-two comput

Sphenoid Sinus Cholesteatoma-Complications and Skull Base Osteomyelitis: Case Report and Review of Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Cholesteatoma of the paranasal sinuses is uncommon. Its clinical characteristics are an expanding growth of the affected paranasal sinuses consisting of keratinizing squamous epithelium with bony wall destruction. Among involved paranasal sinuses, sphenoid sinus cholesteatoma is the least common. CASE PRESENTATION: An 82-year-old female diabetic patient presented with subacute onset of fever after experiencing chronic progressive headaches for more than 20 years. Nasal endoscopy found purulent discharge from left sphenoethmoidal recess. Computed tomography (CT) scan of the paran

[The incidence and location of inflammatory paranasal sinus lesions in CT].

Several recent studies have labelled the anterior ethmoid as the main source of chronic and/or recurrent sinusitis in the entire paranasal sinus system. In an attempt to identify other possible patterns of developing sinusitis, 1,345 computed tomographies of neurological and neurosurgical patients with no previous history of paranasal sinusitis were evaluated. These scans were made between 1985 and 1989 in the Neurosurgical Clinic of the University of Freiburg. Seventy-five of these studies revealed evidence of inflammatory changes. In 57 scans maxillary sinus disease was evident, while in 46

Detection of chlorine and bromine in free liquid from the sphenoid sinus as an indicator of seawater drowning.

We have investigated the usefulness of elemental analysis by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) in the examination of free liquid from the sphenoid sinus of drowning victims. We detected both chlorine and bromine in liquid taken from the sphenoid sinus of seawater drowning victims. Because these elements were below the quantification limit in freshwater cases, we could easily distinguish seawater from freshwater drowning cases. Detection of these elements from the liquid in the sphenoid sinuses of drowning victims may be useful as a supportive measure for seawater drowning.

Intradiploic epidermoid cyst of the sphenoid wing.

Epidermoids are blastomatous malformations of abnormal epithelial proliferation. Intradiploic epidermoids are very rare lesions that may occur in all flat bones of the calvarium and in the paranasal sinuses, maxilla, temporal bone, and sphenoid bone. This article describes the unique case of an intradiploic epidermoid tumor located in the greater sphenoid wing. Theories of pathogenesis, clinical behavior, diagnosis, and treatment of diploic epidermoids are reviewed.

[Osteoma of the sphenoid sinus--report of two cases].

Although osteoma of the paranasal sinus is comparatively common, involvement of the sphenoidal sinus region is extremely rare. Lame reported that a total of twelve cases had been described in the European literature since 1800. Mikaelin, Kulczynski and Dolan, since then, described three cases. This paper deals with two surgical cases of sphenoidal sinus osteoma, reviewing literature on paranasal sinus osteoma and differential diagnosis in the sphenoidal sinus lesion. Case 1. A 20-year-old man was referred to us by an ophthalmologist, complaining of left visual disturbance (visual acuity: 0.02)

Diagnosis of drowning by summation of sodium, potassium, and chloride ion levels in sphenoidal sinus fluid: Differentiating between freshwater and seawater drowning and its application to brackish water and bathtub deaths.

Analysis of ions in sphenoidal fluid can be a useful index for the diagnosis of drowning. We evaluated the reference ranges of non-drowning cases using statistical methods and three indices: sodium ion (Na+), summation of sodium and potassium ions (SUMNa+K), and summation of sodium, potassium and chloride ions (SUMNa+K+Cl). The reference ranges were 96≤Na+<152, 139≤SUMNa+K<179, 243≤SUMNa+K+Cl<311(mEq/L), respectively. Victim indices outside of the reference ranges indicate that the victim probably inspired water with higher or lower ion concentrations than those of body fluid in sphenoidal sin

Developmental Morphometry of the Paranasal Sinuses in Subjects Aged 1-25 Years: A Computed Tomography Study.

The present study aimed to evaluate the developmental morphometry of the paranasal sinuses using computed tomography (CT) in subjects aged 1-25 years and to characterize age-related changes in sinus dimensions, volume, and surface area throughout childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood. This retrospective CT-based study included 250 subjects (125 females and 125 males) without radiologic evidence of sinonasal pathology. Bilateral morphometric analyses of the frontal, sphenoid, maxillary, and ethmoid sinuses were performed using multiplanar CT images and three-dimensional reconstructions. M

Isolated sphenoid lesions: diagnosis and management.

Isolated sphenoid lesions are rare. It is likely that isolated sphenoid sinus disease is underreported for a number of reasons. First, the presenting symptoms are often nonspecific; second, the inaccessibility of the sinus precludes optimal physical examination; and third, before the advent of CT and MRI scanning, radiologic examination of the sinus was inadequate. Endoscopic evaluation and current imaging techniques with CT or MRI have contributed to an increase in diagnosis of these lesions. Twenty-one patients with isolated sphenoid lesions that I treated in a 4-year period are presented. T

Sinolith: a rare isolated sphenoid sinus lesion.

Sinolith is a calculus in the paranasal sinuses. It has been also known as antrolith, rhinolith, antral calculi, antral stone, or antral rhinolith. The pathogenesis of calculi formation within a paranasal sinus is still not known. Chronic infection, foreign material, poorly draining sinus, and fungal infection are the main predisposing factors. Isolated sphenoid sinus lesions are rare, and most of them are inflammatory diseases. The main symptom of sphenoid sinus lesions is headache. Headache may be the only symptom of sphenoid sinus lesions. Sinolith is mostly encountered in the maxillary sin

Hepatocellular carcinoma presenting as an isolated sphenoid sinus lesion: a case report.

We report a rare case of a metastatic sphenoid sinus lesion originating from an undiagnosed hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in a 53-year-old man who presented with gradually progressive external ophthalmoplegia. Imaging showed a right sphenoid sinus lesion infiltrating the parasellar region. Although a primary sphenoid biopsy was inconclusive, positive hepatitis B surface antigen and CT-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology suggested an HCC. A repeat endoscopic biopsy from the sphenoid with immunohistochemistry confirmed the lesion to be metastatic HCC. Metastasis to the paranasal sinuses is e

Skull base osteomyelitis leading to lateral medullary syndrome in a child.

Skull base osteomyelitis (SBO) arising from the sphenoidal paranasal air sinus infection without associated external otitis is rare. Initially SBO may have headache as the only symptom with cranial neuropathies occurring later. We report a 10-year-old immunocompetent girl with headache and chronic sinusitis, who developed a lateral medullary syndrome following streptococcal milleri sphenoidal osteomyelitis.

[Acute sinusitis].

The sinusitis is the term, which describes inflammation process of mucous membrane of these sinuses. Generally inflammation spreads from the nose to the paranasal sinus, so rhinosinusitis is the common name of disease. In classification of sinusitis two aspects are important--duration of signs and symptoms and changes in mucous membrane of sinus. In acute sinusitis symptoms withdraw after treatment, and mucous membrane comes back to the normal state. The most frequent bacteria's responsible for sinusitis are aerobes and among them: Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella ca
