Association of Injury History and Incident Injury in Cadet Basic Military Training.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the association between injury history at enrollment and incident lower extremity (LE) injury during cadet basic training among first-year military cadets. METHODS: Medically treated LE injuries during cadet basic training documented in the Defense Medical Surveillance System were ascertained in a prospective cohort study of three large US military academies from 2005 to 2008. Both acute injuries (International Classification of Disease, Ninth Revision, codes in the 800-900s, including fracture, dislocations, and sprains/strains) and injury-related muscu

Theoretical basis for patterning EMG amplitudes to assess muscle dysfunction.

A theoretical basis for assessing muscle dysfunction due to sprain/strain injuries is presented. We propose that muscle tissue trauma results in an alteration in the patterns of neural recruitment, a reduction in the force-generating capability of the injured muscle, and/or pain sensations. Furthermore, a lower than normal recruitment of motoneuron pools in the injured area can result in elevated recruitment levels from compensating motoneuron pools for a given motor task. It is proposed that these changes in motoneuron recruitment can be readily apparent in the ratios of EMG amplitudes among

Mechanical back pain in the athlete.

Effective management of mechanical back pain in the athlete requires an understanding of the significance of the nature and the location of the pain and which injuries are related to the age or sport of the athlete. Muscle strains and interspinous ligament sprains occur at any age and in all sports. However, the adolescent may have an iliac crest apophysitis rather than a muscle strain, and the gymnast or diver may have interspinous process bursitis or a stress fracture of the pars interarticularis rather than a ligament sprain. Similarly, the swimmer with upper thoracic pain, training in the

Rates of ankle and foot injuries in active-duty U.S. Army soldiers, 2000-2006.

Ankle and foot injuries (AFI) are a major cause of Active-Duty Army (ADA) soldiers' time lost from training and combat operations. We used the Total Army Injury and Health Outcomes Database to compute the rates of AFI to identify high-risk ADA groups for the years 2000-2006. During this time, 16% of soldiers were clinically seen at least once for an AFI. Yearly, 60% to 70% of ADA soldiers with AFI had an ankle sprain/strain, and ankle sprain/strain had the highest 7-year rate of all AFIs (103 per 1,000). From 2000 to 2006, all AFI rates declined; however, enlisted male soldiers < or = 30 years

Association Between Concussion and Lower Extremity Injuries in Collegiate Athletes.

BACKGROUND: Concussions have been associated with elevated musculoskeletal injury risk; however, the influence of unreported and unrecognized concussions has not been investigated. HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to examine the association between concussion and lower extremity musculoskeletal injury rates across a diverse array of sports among collegiate student-athletes at the conclusion of their athletic career. The hypothesis was that there will be a positive association between athletes who reported a history of concussions and higher rates of lower extremity injuries. STUDY D

Epidemiologic comparisons of soccer-related injuries presenting to emergency departments and reported within high school and collegiate settings.

BACKGROUND: Few studies compare sports injury patterns in different settings. This study described the epidemiology of soccer injuries presenting to emergency departments (EDs) and compared injuries presenting to EDs to injuries presenting to collegiate and high school athletic trainers (ATs). METHODS: Soccer-related injuries (product code 1267) in the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) that were sustained by individuals at least two years of age in 2004-2013 were included. High School Reporting Information Online (HS RIO) data for high school soccer injuries during the 20

Musculoskeletal injuries and pain in dancers: a systematic review update.

The objective of this study was to assemble and synthesize the best available literature from 2004 to 2008 on musculoskeletal injury and pain in dancers. MEDLINE and CINAHL were the primary sources of data. Indexed terms such as dance, dancer, dancing, athletic injuries, occupational injuries, sprains and strains, musculoskeletal diseases, bone density, menstruation disturbances, and eating disorders were used to search the databases. Citations were screened for relevance using a priori criteria, and relevant studies were critically reviewed for scientific merit by the best-evidence synthesis

Magnetic resonance imaging evaluation of temporomandibular joint and associated soft tissue changes following acute condylar injury.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in cases of acute condylar injury and assessed soft tissue damage such as disc displacement, capsular tear, and hemarthrosis within the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). PATIENTS AND METHODS: This prospective study was conducted in 15 patients who presented with unilateral or bilateral condylar fracture or contusion with a unilateral or bilateral diagnosis of TMJ sprain/strain. Patients with trauma of less than 7 days previously with a unilateral or bilateral condylar fracture or contusion with a diagnosis of TMJ sprain/s

Epidemiology of Pediatric Dog Walking-Related Injuries Among Children Presenting to US Emergency Departments, 2001 to 2020.

BACKGROUND: Dog walking is associated with a significant injury burden among adults, but the risk of injury associated with dog walking among children is poorly understood. This study describes the epidemiology of children treated at US emergency departments for injuries related to leash-dependent dog walking. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database was retrospectively analyzed to identify children (5 to 18 years of age) presenting to US emergency departments between 2001 and 2020 with dog walking-related injuries. Primary outcomes included annual estimate

Hand and Wrist Injuries: Common Problems and Solutions.

Injuries to the hands and wrist are common in athletes. Injuries include acute fractures, dislocations, ligamentous, and tendon injuries, as well as more chronic injuries such as sprains and strains. Complications in the treatment of sports injuries of the hand and wrist may be divided into 2 categories: incorrect or delayed diagnosis and iatrogenic injury related to treatment. This article highlights common sports injuries of the hand and wrist and their complications, and includes tips for successful management.

Injuries in judo: a systematic literature review including suggestions for prevention.

BACKGROUND: There is limited knowledge on epidemiological injury data in judo. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review scientific literature on the frequency and characteristics of injuries in judo. METHODS: The available literature up to June 2013 was searched for prospective as well as retrospective studies on injuries in judo. Data extraction and presentation focused on the incidence rate, injury risk, types, location and causes of injuries. RESULTS: During the Olympic Games in 2008 and 2012, an average injury risk of about 11-12% has been observed. Sprains, strains and contusions, usually o

Sports-related injuries in children.

Within a 3-year period, from 1980 to 1982, 1124 sports injuries of children aged 6-15 years were treated in the Turku University Central Hospital casualty department. Two-thirds (69%) of the injuries were sustained by boys. Sports injuries represented 21% of the diagnoses related to accidents in this age group. Half of the sports accidents occurred during the 4 winter months. Boys were injured most commonly in ice hockey (36%) and football (20%) and girls in skating (18%) and riding (18%). One quarter (26%) of the injuries were located in the head and neck, 36% in the upper extremities, 33% in
