The pituitary stalk interruption syndrome: endocrine features and benefits of growth hormone therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood anterior-pituitary insufficiency has many causes (malformative, genetic, traumatic, tumoral...). One particular entity can be clearly identified: pituitary stalk interruption syndrome (PSIS). The aim of our study was to analyse the long-term evolution of patients with PSIS. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The records of all the children followed at Dijon University Hospital between 1990 and 2008 who underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and endocrinological evaluation that revealed a growth hormone (GH) deficiency were analysed. We thus selected 14 children diagnosed

Central diabetes insipidus: Is it Langerhans cell histiocytosis of the pituitary stalk? A diagnostic pitfall.

Central diabetes insipidus (CDI) is a rare disorder that may be caused by a variety of diseases. In pediatric and adolescent patients the most common causes for CDI are Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) and germinoma. To avoid a potentially hazardous biopsy of the hypothalamic pituitary region it is recommended to evaluate patients with CDI carefully to identify potential extracranial lesions. Since LCH is the most common systemic disease that may cause CDI, special focus is paid to the identification of LCH lesions. We report on a 9(1/2) year old girl who presented with central diabetes ins

Fitness effects of X chromosome drive in the stalk-eyed fly, Cyrtodiopsis dalmanni.

Sex-ratio (SR) males produce predominantly female progeny because most Y chromosome sperm are rendered nonfunctional. The resulting transmission advantage of XSR chromosomes should eventually cause population extinction unless segregation distortion is masked by suppressors or balanced by selection. By screening male stalk-eyed flies, Cyrtodiopsis dalmanni, for brood sex ratio we found unique SR alleles at three X-linked microsatellite loci and used them to determine if SR persists as a balanced polymorphism. We found that XSR/XST females produced more offspring than other genotypes and that S

The development of a long, coiled, optic nerve in the stalk-eyed fly Cyrtodiopsis whitei.

In the stalk-eyed fly Cyrtodiopsis whitei (Diopsidae; Diptera), the relatively long optic nerve develops within the tight lumen of a very short eyestalk. Axonal growth is generally considered in terms of path finding, selective fasciculation, and towing. Physical forces that are necessary for axon lengthening are generated either by the growth cone or by the growth of surrounding tissues. Therefore, it is surprising to encounter a loosely coiled nerve apparently lacking any attachments that could allow for pull, or towing, of the nerve. In this study, we used histological sections and whole-mo

[Granulomatous change of the pituitary stalk caused by Rathke's cleft cyst: a case report].

We report a case of granulomatous change of the pituitary stalk caused by Rathke's cleft cyst. A 50-year-old woman complained of thirst and polyuria in December 2000. In January 2001, the patient was suspected to have diabetes inspidus, and MR Imaging showed a suprasellar mass of the pituitary stalk. The mass was totally resected by the trans-sylvian approach. Pathological diagnosis was Rathke's cleft cyst with subsequent granulomatous change. To our knowledge, there have been 11 cases of Rathke's cleft cyst and subsequent granulomatous change. In the literature, diabetes inspidus was not impr

Thickened pituitary stalk on magnetic resonance imaging in children with central diabetes insipidus.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has revealed isolated pituitary stalk thickening (PST) in certain cases of idiopathic or secondary central diabetes insipidus (DI) due to infiltrative processes. Twenty-six children with DI and PST underwent cerebral MRI at the age of 8 +/- 4 years and were followed (n = 25) by clinical and MRI evaluation for 5.5 +/- 3.6 and 3.0 +/- 2 years, respectively, but given no treatment other than hormonal substitutive therapy. Patients were subdivided into groups according to the etiology of the DI: germinoma (n = 4), Langerhans' histiocytosis (n = 5) or 'idiopathic' D

Meningioma of the pituitary stalk without dural attachment: case report and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Tumors in the suprasellar region such as adenomas of the pituitary gland, craniopharyngiomas, nonneoplastic cystic lesions (especially Rathke's cleft cysts), and meningiomas are frequently encountered in neurosurgical practice. Meningiomas originate from the arachnoid layer connected to the dura of the anterior or posterior clinoidal process, or the tuberculum, dorsum, or diaphragma sellae. Tumors originating from the pituitary stalk are rare. Such lesions may include germinomas, astrocytomas, histiocytosis X, hamartomas, and sarcoidosis. We report a patient with a su

Pituitary stalk interruption syndrome: a clinical-biological-genetic assessment of its pathogenesis.

The detection of pituitary stalk interruption syndrome (PSIS) by magnetic resonance imaging is a diagnostic marker of permanent GH deficiency (GHD), but the pathogenesis of PSIS is unknown. Fifty-one patients (27 males) with GHD and PSIS were classified according to whether the GHD was isolated (group 1, 16 cases) or associated with other anterior pituitary abnormalities (group 2, 35 cases). The 2 groups had similar characteristics (frequencies of perinatal abnormalities, ages at occurrence of first signs and at diagnosis, height, GH peak response to stimuli other than GHRH), but associated ma

Gradual progress of ACTH deficiency in a child with panhypopituitarism associated with pituitary stalk transection.

We present here a 13-year-old male with hypopituitarism which accompanied an insidious and gradual progress of ACTH deficiency. ACTH deficiency finally led to an overt crisis of adrenal insufficiency at the age of 12 years and 7 months. This patient is unique because the insidious and gradual progress has been proved by not only the laboratory results but also the clinical course for over 13 years. The cause of panhypopituitarism including ACTH deficiency is thought to have existed before or at the delivery because of the stalk transection seen on the magnetic resonance image (MRI). At the cri

Hypothalamic-pituitary function in growth hormone-deficient patients with pituitary stalk transection.

We compared 1.5 T magnetic resonance (MR) image findings with hypothalamic-pituitary function in 11 patients with idiopathic pituitary dwarfism, each of whom had a history of perinatal abnormalities, and 1 patient with posttraumatic pituitary dwarfism. MR imaging revealed transection of the pituitary stalk in all patients and the formation of an ectopic posterior lobe at the proximal stump in 9 patients, none of whom had polydipsia or polyuria. Three patients without an ectopic posterior lobe had diabetes insipidus. The 5 patients who had small pituitary glands (less than 2 mm in height) had h

Fine structural study of the posterior pituitary after destruction of the hypophysial stalk in the rat.

Electrolytic destruction of the pituitary stalk in rats markedly affected their water metabolism and induced ultrastructural changes in the posterior pituitary. The urinary output increased for 1-2 days after surgery. Subsequently polyuria and polydipsia temporarily decreased and vasopressin excretion with the urine increased. This oliguric interphase was followed by permanent polyuria and polydipsia. No ultrastructural changes were apparent for a few hours after surgery, but 3-5 days later the number of electron-dense granules of the axons decreased and conglomerated in the form of multilamel

Valorization of sorghum stalk lignocellulose for xylooligosaccharide production: process optimization and chromatographic characterization.

Sorghum stalk (Sorghum bicolor) represents an abundant and underutilized lignocellulosic biomass with significant potential for the generation of value-added bioproducts within biorefinery systems. In the present study, sorghum stalk (SS) biomass was valorized for the production of xylooligosaccharides (XOS) through alkaline extraction of xylan, followed by enzymatic hydrolysis. SS was treated with alkali to extract high-purity xylan, where increasing NaOH concentrations significantly (p < 0.05) enhanced xylan recovery. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy indicated that xylan extracted usi

Chemical and Microwave Modification of Corn Stalk Biochar: Physicochemical Characterization and Functional Insight.

Corn stalk, a globally abundant agricultural residue, presents significant waste management challenges while offering a promising feedstock for biochar production. However, pristine corn stalk biochar is constrained by limited surface functionality and underdeveloped porosity, which impede its performance in environmental and agricultural applications. While acid- or alkali-modified biochar has been extensively applied, the mechanistic basis for the synergistic improvement achieved through microwave modification remains inadequately understood. This study comprehensively compared the structura

Network-guided synthesis of antagonistic microbiota for suppressing maize stalk rot disease.

Plant-associated microbiomes play a crucial role in sustaining host health and fitness, but how pathogen invasion reshapes microbial interaction networks and how to leverage this for developing effective biocontrol strategies remain poorly understood. This study investigated the maize microbiome under Fusarium stalk rot stress by integrating large-scale amplicon sequencing, network refinement, and experimental validation. To distinguish biological interactions from spurious associations driven by environmental and geographic factors, we applied a refined analytical framework to filter out abio

Antimicrobial activity of lignin from grape stalks: investigating the effect of different formulations.

Lignin, a major component of lignocellulosic biomass, has gained attention as a potential antimicrobial agent. However, lignin's limited solubility often requires the use of harsh or non-eco-friendly solvents, which can hinder its applications and pose environmental concerns. This work aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial capacity of two lignin samples extracted from grape stalks using different methods: alkaline extraction and deep eutectic solvents. The antimicrobial activity of lignin was evaluated in three formulations: micronized, dissolved, and nanoparticles, against Escherichia coli, Pse

Single-cell consequences of X-linked meiotic drive in stalk-eyed flies.

Sex-linked meiotic drivers limit the inheritance of the alternate sex chromosome in the heterogametic sex, subsequently skewing the offspring sex ratio. They consequently have large impacts on genome evolution, adaptation, and the emergence and maintenance of sexually selected traits. Despite this, our understanding of their molecular basis and consequences for gametogenesis and sex chromosome regulation more broadly has focused on a handful of model organisms, primarily Drosophila and mouse, which are not representative of the broad diversity of reproductive modes and drive systems in nature.
