A commercially available impedancemeter was modified to permit measurement of hearing thresholds. Both the ipsilateral and the contralateral acoustic reflex thresholds were determined in dB SL in a group of 20 young adults with normal hearing. No significant differences in reflex thresholds were obtained.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the reliability of transcranial magnetic stimulation in eliciting admittance changes due to activation of middle-ear muscles.

Patients in the neonatal intensive care unit were tested by hearing screening tests including auditory brain stem response (ABR), transient and distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs and DPOAEs), and acoustic stapedius reflex (ASR), and by middle ear function tests including multifrequency tympanometry and pneumatic otoscopy. The results of startle and acoustic stapedius reflex measurements can be used to subclassify various types of fixation of the ossicular chain. A prospective study was carried out to objectively quantificate the most important predictive factors in idiopathic facial paralysis (Bell's palsy). A large sample of isolated elephantimorph petrosal bones was recovered from Pleistocene deposits in Friesenhahn Cave, Bexar County, Texas. We encountered 185 patients with Bell's palsy at our hospital between January 2003 and December 2005. Of these patients, 60% visited our department within 3 days of the onset, and 90% within 7 days of the onset; the interval from onset to hospital visit showed no relation with the severity of the paralysis. Auditory brainstem response (ABR) is the reference screening technique for acoustic neuromas, but because of a few false negatives and the increasing performance of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), its role as the standard method has been questioned. We assessed sensitivity of screening tests in 89 patients with surgically proven acoustic neuromas. Thirty-nine cases with Ramsay Hunt syndrome were presented, in which 23 cases were firmly diagnosed early, and others were misdiagnosed to be Bell's palsy in 9 cases, sudden sensorineural hearing loss in 5, herpes zoster pharyngitis in 1 and acute suppurative otitis media in 1, respectively. A new method for detecting the acoustic reflex that utilizes standard otoacoustic emissions recording techniques is introduced and discussed. Two successive identical tone bursts of 100 ms duration and 10 ms interstimulus interval are presented in the occluded ear canal at a repetition rate of one per second. The latency, the rise time and the influence of the acoustic reflex on sound transmission were investigated in the adult rat during ketamin anesthesia. This was done by recordings of the cochlear microphonics (CM) and electromyographic (EMG) recordings of the reflex responses of the tensor tympani muscle. Arterial malformations of the middle ear are rare entities which, if unrecognized, can lead to serious complications. We will present six such cases and summarize the relevant literature. Our presentation will review the development of middle ear arterial structures. Radiologic techniques useful in delineating these conditions will be described, and methods of treatment will be discussed.

Forty consecutive patients with sudden onset sensorineural hearing loss treated similarly over a four-year period were studied retrospectively to determine a correlation between presence or absence of the acoustic stapedial reflex (ASR) and recovery of hearing. Six patients were dropped from the study because of incomplete data. There were 42 affected ears in the remaining 34 patients.
