Staphylococcus epidermidis (SE) is a Gram-positive bacterium that is a major cause of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), largely due to its ability to form biofilms on medical devices and its resistance to many antibiotics. Cholesteryl linoleate (CL) is a lipid secreted by epithelial cells that has been shown to have antimicrobial effects against SE, but how it interacts with the bacteria remains poorly understood. In this study, we developed a surface plasmon resonance microscopy (SPRm) protocol to observe the interaction between CL formulated in phospholipid (CL-PL) liposomes and live

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus epidermidis generally causes skin and soft tissue infections. Control and treatment of infections caused by S. epidermidis require in-depth analyses of its genotypic traits and patterns of their antibiotic susceptibility.
METHODS AND RESULTS: 100 S. epidermidis isolates were obtainedfrom community setting in Midnapore, West Bengal, India. Different biochemical and PCR-based analyses could identify the presumed S. epidermidis phenotypically, and subsequently their genotypic makeup. Besides that, the isolates were studied for presence of virulence genes and biofilm fo

BACKGROUND: Late-onset sepsis (LOS) with Staphylococcus epidermidis is common in preterm infants, but the immunological mechanisms underlying heightened susceptibility are poorly understood. Our aim is to characterize the ontogeny of cytokine responses to live S. epidermidis in preterm infants with and without subsequent Gram-positive LOS.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective, observational cohort study of preterm infants (<30 weeks gestational age [GA]) with blood sampling on Days 1, 7, 14, 21, and 28 of life. Cytokine responses in peripheral whole blood stimulated with live S. epidermidis we

Acne dysbiosis happens when there is a microbial imbalance of the over-growth of Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) in the acne microbiome. In our previous study, we demonstrated that Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis, a probiotic skin bacterium) can exploit glycerol fermentation to produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) which have antimicrobial activities to suppress the growth of P. acnes. Unlike glycerol, sucrose is chosen here as a selective fermentation initiator (SFI) that can specifically intensify the fermentation activity of S. epidermidis, but not P. acnes. A co-culture of

Post-neurosurgical infection is a serious complication that occurs in approx. 4% of all patients undergoing neurosurgical procedures and is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates and prolonged length of intensive care unit (ICU) stay. Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS), especially methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis (MRSE), are the most frequent pathogens involved in CNS post-neurosurgical meningitis. Treatment is challenging especially in patients with meningitis due to multidrug- resistant (MDR) CONS. Herein, we report a unique case of post-neurosurgical meningi

The prevalence of drug resistance among clinically significant blood isolates of Staphylococcus epidermidis (n = 464) and consumption of antibiotics at a tertiary care teaching hospital (Meilahti Hospital, Helsinki) were analysed for the period 1983-1994. Resistance to methicillin increased from 28 to 77%. Simultaneously, usage of third-generation cephalosporins increased nearly sevenfold (from 8.6 kg/ to 56.4 kg/year). A significant correlation was found between percentages of methicillin resistance and usage of penicillinase-stable beta-lactam agents, including cloxacillin, imipenem, and fir

AIMS: Chronic bone and joint infections caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis can be difficult to treat and are prone to recurrence. In this study, established human osteoblast- and osteocyte-like cell line models were used in vitro to investigate the intracellular persistence of S. epidermidis as a potential mechanism for infection persistence.
METHODS: The SaOS2 human osteosarcoma cell line was differentiated into osteoblast-like (SaOS2-OB) and osteocyte-like (SaOS2-OY) stages and infected with four S. epidermidis strains at varying multiplicities of infection. Susceptibilities to lysostaphi

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Staphylococcus epidermidis is a major cause of prosthetic joint infections (PJIs). Multidrug resistant (MDR), hospital-adapted clones constitute most cases globally, though regional differences in lineage dissemination likely exist. The aim was to explore the population structure of S. epidermidis from PJIs in Sweden and France, with a focus on the presence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
METHODS: This study included genome sequence data from 191 clinical S. epidermidis isolates collected from patients with PJI in central Sweden (2007-16; n = 138) and the Lyon re

Prosthetic valve endocarditis is a serious complication following valve replacement surgery, with the development of aortic root abscess being a catastrophic manifestation. We present a case of a 71-year-old female with a bioprosthetic aortic valve who presented with shortness of breath. Echocardiographic findings revealed vegetation on the prosthetic aortic valve with a periaortic, annular abscess. Given the patient's comorbidities and high surgical risk, conservative management with antibiotics was chosen. The patient responded well to antibiotic therapy and was discharged with long-term ant

Staphylococcus epidermidis, a major skin bacterium, can cause opportunistic infections. Use of antimicrobial agents against Cutibacterium acnes for acne treatment becomes a risk factor for emergence of antimicrobial-resistant skin bacteria. In this study, the impact of antimicrobial treatment of acne vulgaris on S. epidermidis antimicrobial resistance was assessed. A total of 344 S. epidermidis strains isolated from patients with acne vulgaris who visited hospital (165 strains) and dermatological clinics (179 strains), respectively, were analyzed. Except for doxycycline, the resistance rates w

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis (MRS) predominantly colonizes the skin and mucous membranes of humans and other animals. We describe the case of a male newborn of gestational age 39 weeks whose primary and repeated blood cultures and cerebrospinal fluid samples isolated MRS. The choice and duration of antibiotic therapy were determined by the clinical presentation, infection parameters, and results of bacteriological analyses of blood and cerebrospinal fluid samples obtained from the newborn on the day 5 of life. After 28 days of antibiotic therapy for sepsis accompanied by me

OBJECTIVE: Investigate the ability of local applicaiton of vancomycin, either in powder form or suspended within poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) microspheres (MS), to treat infection using a rat spinal model. Surgical site infections (SSIs) are a serious complication after spine surgery and are associated with high morbidity and mortality and often caused my coagulase negative staphylococci. A comprehensive approach to reduce SSIs has been recommended including the use of topical vancomycin. Animal and human studies have shown improved control of infection with loca

INTRODUCTION: The most feared and challenging complication in treating patients with musculoskeletal trauma is infection after fracture fixation, which can delay healing and, in turn, result in permanent functional loss of limbs or even amputation.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we describe a case in which a patient presented with stage 4 chronic osteomyelitis on the right tibia and fibula. To treat the late infection by eradicating or reducing the infection, it was recommended to replace the internal fixation with surgical debridement for 6 weeks and antibiotics for 6-12 weeks until the internal f

Staphylococcus epidermidis is a bacterium frequently isolated from contaminated platelet concentrates (PCs), a blood product used to treat bleeding disorders in transfusion patients. PCs offer an accidental niche for colonization of S. epidermidis by forming biofilms and thus avoiding clearance by immune factors present in this milieu. Using biochemical and microscopy techniques, we investigated the structural changes of the peptidoglycan (PG) and the biofilm matrix of S. epidermidis biofilms formed in whole-blood derived PCs compared to biofilms grown in glucose-supplemented trypticase soy br

A recent article in Science Advances described the striking discovery that the commensal Staphylococcus epidermidis strain MO34 displays antimicrobial and antitumor activities by producing a small molecule, identified as the nucleobase analog 6-N-hydroxylaminopurine (6-HAP). However, in contradiction to the literature, the authors claimed that 6-HAP is nonmutagenic and proposed that the toxic effect of 6-HAP results from its ability to inhibit, in its base form, DNA synthesis. To resolve the discrepancy, we proved by genetic experiments with bacteria and yeast that extracts of MO34 do contain

Commensal skin microbiota plays an important role in both influencing the immune response of the skin and acting as a barrier against colonisation of potentially pathogenic microorganisms and overgrowth of opportunistic pathogens. Staphylococcus epidermidis is a key constituent of the normal microbiota on human skin. It balances the inflammatory response after skin injury and produces antimicrobial molecules that selectively inhibit skin pathogens. Here we describe Lactobacillus brevis DSM17250 that was identified among hundreds of Lactobacillus strains to exhibit an anti-inflammatory effect i
