On the ratios and the logarithms of dark colors in image processing.

In image processing and color science, colors are often specified by their luminance and chromaticity (such as Y x y). Chromaticities are color ratios, which can be difficult to compute reliably due to noise, when the tristimulus values are small, e.g., for dark colors. A detailed statistical analysis of ratio distributions shows that below a certain signal/noise ratio, the computed color ratios are very noisy and often wrong. This contrasts with human vision, where a given chromaticity viewed at high luminance will appear to the viewer as having a distinct color, but when that same chromatici

Modelling the occurrence and spatial distribution of screwworm species in Northern Pakistan.

We use binomial kriging to model the spatial distribution of myiasis by three species namely Chrysomya bezziana, Wohlfahrtia magnifica and Lucilia cuprina in the livestock of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Traditional species distribution models are usually based on assumption of independence of observations. Species data often come in presence-only form for which background points are generated based on some covariates using statistical and machine learning techniques such as MaxEnt. We assume a symmetric binomial distribution based on the principle of maximum entropy in order to decide the nu

Potent protection against H5N1 and H7N9 influenza via childhood hemagglutinin imprinting.

Two zoonotic influenza A viruses (IAV) of global concern, H5N1 and H7N9, exhibit unexplained differences in age distribution of human cases. Using data from all known human cases of these viruses, we show that an individual's first IAV infection confers lifelong protection against severe disease from novel hemagglutinin (HA) subtypes in the same phylogenetic group. Statistical modeling shows that protective HA imprinting is the crucial explanatory factor, and it provides 75% protection against severe infection and 80% protection against death for both H5N1 and H7N9. Our results enable us to pr

[Results of a predictive trial of the response to nomifensine in ambulatory patients].

Nine hundred and fifty eight cases of neurotic-secondary ambulatory depression were treated with nomifensin by 135 psychiatrists. The analysis of visual analogue scales and of the global assessment shows that:--there were 2/3 responders and 1/3 non-responders--the most improved items were: crying, troubles in getting to sleep, abnormal tiredness, anxiety;--associated drugs from the beginning were frequent. They seemed to correspond to different initial symptomatologies but the final state did not differ substantially;--discrimination methods (linear discriminant function, stepwise discriminati

Biclustering via sparse clustering.

In identifying subgroups of a heterogeneous disease or condition, it is often desirable to identify both the observations and the features which differ between subgroups. For instance, it may be that there is a subgroup of individuals with a certain disease who differ from the rest of the population based on the expression profile for only a subset of genes. Identifying the subgroup of patients and subset of genes could lead to better-targeted therapy. We can represent the subgroup of individuals and genes as a bicluster, a submatrix, U , of a larger data matrix, X , such that the features and

Piecewise mixed-effects models with skew distributions for evaluating viral load changes: A Bayesian approach.

Studies of human immunodeficiency virus dynamics in acquired immuno deficiency syndrome (AIDS) research are very important in evaluating the effectiveness of antiretroviral (ARV) therapies. The potency of ARV agents in AIDS clinical trials can be assessed on the basis of a viral response such as viral decay rate or viral load change in plasma. Following ARV treatment, the profile of each subject's viral load tends to follow a 'broken stick'-like dynamic trajectory, indicating multiple phases of decline and increase in viral loads. Such multiple-phases (change-points) can be described by a rand

Deep learning reconstruction and ADC: is quantitative comparability preserved?

Deep learning (DL)-based reconstruction can improve image quality and acquisition efficiency in breast diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), but its effects on quantitative biomarkers warrant careful consideration. Although recent work reported improved image quality without significant differences in mean apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), statistical nonsignificance does not necessarily establish quantitative equivalence or interchangeability across reconstruction pipelines. Reconstruction related changes in noise characteristics, signal intensity, spatial resolution, and ADC distributions ma

A novel two-parameter unit probability model with properties and applications.

This paper develops a novel two-parameter unit probability model which is the generalized form Kumaraswami distribution that exhibits greater flexibility compared to well-known existing distributions, attributed to its distinct hazard and density function shapes. Extensive analysis has been conducted to explore numerous statistical features of the specified distribution, specifically moments, and order statistics providing explicit expressions for these measures. The maximum likelihood estimation is employed to estimate the model parameters and a numerical simulation analysis confirms the cons

Variability in biological monitoring of solvent exposure. I. Development of a population physiological model.

Biological indicators of exposure to solvents are often characterised by a high variability that may be due either to fluctuations in exposure or individual differences in the workers. To describe and understand this variability better a physiological model for differing workers under variable industrial environments has been developed. Standard statistical distributions are used to simulate variability in exposure concentration, physical workload, body build, liver function, and renal clearance. For groups of workers exposed daily, the model calculates air monitoring indicators and biological

Laplace Transform-Based Nonparametric Test of Exponentiality against DMRL class with preservation under the Homogeneous Poisson Shock Model and applications in survival analysis and reliability.

This paper introduces a novel, computationally efficient nonparametric test for assessing the null hypothesis of exponentiality against alternatives belonging to the Decreasing Mean Residual Life (DMRL) class. The test statistic is developed using Laplace transform techniques in conjunction with the theory of U-statistics, ensuring asymptotic normality and scale invariance. In addition, we establish the preservation of the proposed methodology under the Homogeneous Poisson Shock Model, further extending its theoretical robustness in reliability contexts. Critical values are obtained through ex

An Endogenous Quantum-Classical Crossover Temperature in the van der Waals Fluid: Quantumness as an Emergent Behavior.

The onset of quantum behavior in gases is traditionally established through a criterion that is external to classical statistical mechanics. One introduces the thermal de Broglie wavelength and compares it with the mean intermolecular separation, concluding that quantum effects become relevant when nλT3∼1. This condition originates in quantum statistical mechanics and is absent from the classical ideal-gas or van der Waals partition functions. In this work, we show that a grand-canonical treatment of the van der Waals fluid naturally generates an interaction-corrected crossover temperature T3(

A Note on Ordinal Modeling of Smoking Rate Data.

INTRODUCTION: This paper discusses statistical models for ordinal data that may be more appropriate for smoking rate outcomes than are models that assume continuous measurement and normality. Smoking rate outcomes often have distributions that make them inappropriate for many popular statistical models that assume normality, and are more appropriately considered ordinal outcomes. This article describes how the ordinal logistic regression model can be used to obtain estimates of means, and comparisons of means, for smoking rate outcomes. AIMS AND METHODS: Analyses of the daily smoking rate of

A Gaussian process model for chemoinformatics with application to the hazard classification of organic solvents.

With the proliferation of screening tools for chemical testing, it is now possible to create vast databases of chemicals easily. However, rigorous statistical methodologies employed to analyze these databases are in their infancy, and further development to facilitate chemical discovery is imperative. In this paper, we address the challenge of predicting an organic solvent's water pollution class based on its chemical structure. We hypothesize that solvents with similar chemical structure are more likely to belong in the same hazard class. This chemical similarity is measured by the Tanimoto d

Analyzing interrupted time series with count outcomes using single or multiple control time series.

BACKGROUND: Interrupted time series (ITS) analysis is a widely used quasi-experimental design for evaluating the impact of population-level interventions. To control for confounding from concurrent events, researchers often incorporate control time series. However, for count outcomes, especially with control series, methodological development remains limited. DEVELOPMENT: We introduce a likelihood-based framework for controlled ITS analysis with count data. The proposed framework is based on a conditional Poisson likelihood and naturally extends to settings with multiple control series. This

A Gaussian Process Regression and Wavelet Transform Time Series approaches to modeling Influenza A.

The global spread of Influenza A viruses is worsening economic and social challenges. Various mechanistic models have been developed to understand the virus's spread and evaluate intervention effectiveness. This study aimed to model the temporal dynamics of Influenza A using Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) and wavelet transform approaches. The study employed Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT), Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and Wavelet Power Spectrum to analyze time-series data from 2009 to 2023. The GPR model, known for its non-parametric Bayesian nature, effectively captured non-linear t

A note on dynamics of an age-of-infection cholera model.

A recent paper [F. Brauer, Z. Shuai and P. van den Driessche, Dynamics of an age-of-infection cholera model, Math. Biosci. Eng., 10, 2013, 1335--1349.] presented a model for the dynamics of cholera transmission. The model is incorporated with both the infection age of infectious individuals and biological age of pathogen in the environment. The basic reproduction number is proved to be a sharp threshold determining whether or not cholera dies out. The global stability for disease-free equilibrium and endemic equilibrium is proved by constructing suitable Lyapunov functionals. However, for the

Approximating the power of Wilcoxon's rank-sum test against shift alternatives.

Three methods of approximating the power of Wilcoxon's rank-sum test against shift alternatives are studied. They are obtained by using a Gaussian assumption, Edgeworth expansion, or bootstrap. It is assumed that a historical data set is available to use in estimating the shape of the distribution. The methods are compared through simulation across several different distributional types. The results indicate that the bootstrap generally gives the most reliable approximation, however the Edgeworth expansion has the practical advantage that a lower bound on the power can be roughly approximated.

Deep learning-based tools to distinguish plan-specific from generic deviations in EPID-based in vivo dosimetry.

BACKGROUND: Dose distributions calculated with electronic portal imaging device (EPID)-based in vivo dosimetry (EIVD) differ from planned dose distributions due to generic and plan-specific deviations. Generic deviations are characteristic to a class of plans. Examples include limitations in EIVD dose reconstruction, inaccuracies in treatment planning system (TPS) calculations and systematic machine deviations. Plan-specific deviations have an unpredictable character. Examples include discrepancies between the patient model used for dose calculation and the patient position or anatomy during d

Count data regression modeling: an application to spontaneous abortion.

BACKGROUND: In India, around 20,000 women die every year due to abortion-related complications. In count data modeling, there is sometimes a prevalence of zero counts. This article is concerned with the estimation of various count regression models to predict the average number of spontaneous abortions among women in Punjab and few northern states in India. The study also assesses the factors associated with the number of spontaneous abortions. METHODS: This study includes 27,173 married women of Punjab obtained from the DLHS-4 survey (2012-13) to train the count models. The study predicts th

How to Establish a Reference Interval: A Practical Approach.

BACKGROUND: Establishing accurate reference intervals (RIs) is essential for interpreting clinical chemistry laboratory test results and ensuring clinical relevance. The aim of this review is to provide a practical guide to determine RIs using direct and indirect methods. CONTENT: RIs are established by statistical analysis of results from a reference population that is assumed to reflect the distribution of the total population. Two main methods of establishing RIs are the direct method (by active sampling of a population) or the indirect method (by using real-world data). Correct use of a p
