We propose the use of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) as a tool for the quality control of 3-D-printed ceramics. Test samples with premeditated defects, namely single- and two-component samples of zirconia, titania, and titanium suboxides, were printed by stereolithography-based DLP (Digital Light Processing) processes. The OCT tomograms obtained on the green samples showed the capability of the method to visualize variations in the layered structure of the samples as well as the presence of cracks and inclusions at depths up to 130 µm, as validated by SEM images. The structural information

The Virginia Artificial Heart Institute continues to design and develop an axial-flow pediatric ventricular assist device (PVAD) for infants and children in the United States. Our research team has created a database to track potential PVAD candidates at the University of Virginia Children's Hospital. The findings of this database aided with need assessment and design optimization of the PVAD. A numerical analysis of the optimized PVAD1 design (PVAD2 model) was also completed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to predict pressure-flow performance, fluid force estimations, and blood damag

Melanoma is one of the most aggressive and treatment-resistant skin cancers, and its long-term response to conventional therapies and systemic immune checkpoint blockade has limited efficacy because of immunosuppression induced by tumors and off-target toxicity. Transdermal microneedle (MN)-based drug delivery systems have emerged as an interesting alternative for localized, minimally invasive melanoma immunotherapy in recent years. This review is a critical analysis of the recent breakthroughs in MN-mediated immunotherapeutic models of melanoma, with a focus on the capability to: (1) regulate

Maxillofacial surgery planning has been improved by technological advances in 3D printing. The use of customized cutting and positioning guides allows intraoperative reproduction of pre-planned osteotomy cuts, resulting in increased surgical accuracy, reduced surgical time and improved esthetic and functional outcomes. Our paper presents a new method for creating and printing in-house cutting and positioning guides. A computer program (Brainlab iPlan) was used to segment the mandible for three-dimensional planning from imported conventional computed tomography (CT) scans. The virtual model of

INTRODUCTION: Accurate intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) volume measurement is critical for prognostication, but the widely used ABC/2 method may lack accuracy for irregular hematomas. Our group evaluated the feasibility of three dimensional (3D) printed ICH phantoms as a physical reference standard for validating hemorrhage volume measurement methods.
METHODS: In this retrospective feasibility study, 21 non-contrast head computed tomography (CT) studies showing intracranial hemorrhages from two publicly available datasets were converted from segmentation masks into stereolithography files and f

Dissolving microneedles offers a minimally invasive approach for transdermal drug delivery by facilitating drug transport across the stratum corneum while overcoming several limitations associated with conventional routes of administration. Benzhydroxamic acid has demonstrated biochemical and computational evidence associated with inflammatory and pain-related pathways; however, its incorporation into a dissolving microneedle platform has not been extensively explored. This study aimed to fabricate and characterize benzhydroxamic acid-loaded dissolving microneedles using a 3D-printing-assisted

Bone regeneration remains a challenge and designing scaffolds to replicate the natural bone structure (complex hierarchical network) while providing adequate mechanical properties is highly required. Triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS) have attracted considerable interest for their smooth surfaces (without sharp edges connections), lightweight, enhanced surface area, and tunable mechanical performance. This study adopted I-graph wrapped package (IWP), Neovius, primitive, and face-centered cubic rhombic dodecahedron (F-RD) TPMS for scaffold designs (3-6 mm cell size, 70 % porosity) and fabr

BACKGROUND: Patient-specific 3D printing may improve ossiculoplasty, yet the mechanical tolerance to prosthesis length remains poorly quantified. We evaluated how systematic lengthening of a custom 3D-printed incus replacement affects middle-ear mobility in human temporal bones.
METHODS: Five fresh-frozen human temporal bones were prepared through a posterior tympanotomy. Cone-beam CT was used to reconstruct specimen-specific ossicular geometry; the incus was digitally removed and a malleus-stapes prosthesis was designed and printed by stereolithography. For each specimen, three prostheses we

Endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR) of complex abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) requires precise preoperative planning to ensure proper alignment of visceral fenestrations. However, commercial planning platforms remain costly and often inaccessible for many vascular centers. Low-cost, surgeon-driven digital workflows utilizing open-source software and desktop three-dimensional (3D) printing have become practical alternatives, allowing patient-specific planning without dependence on proprietary systems. In this report, we describe a reproducible digital workflow that combines open-sourc

BACKGROUND: One-lung ventilation in infants is a high-risk procedure. Complications include endotracheal tube occlusion, with grave consequences. Although there are commercially available bronchoscopy simulators, there are no realistic models of infant patients. This limits access to training opportunities that would ensure safe and efficient lung isolation. To bridge this gap, we developesd a realistic infant bronchial tree model for single lung intubation and evaluated preliminary validity evidence of its features and clinicians' ability to perform critical skills associated with pediatric o

To assess the accuracy of various intraoral scanners (IOSs) and to investigate the existence of mutual compatibility that affects the accuracy between IOS and 3-dimensional (3D) printing using a scan quadrant model. For clinical implication, crown preparations and cavity design according to prosthetic diagnosis and treatment considerations must be acquired by a digital scanner. The selected typodont model was scanned using a reference scanner, from which reference (Ref) standard tessellation language (STL) data were created. Data obtained by scanning the typodont model with IOSs based on three

AIM: To proof the feasibility of manufacturing patient-indivdual (anthropomorphic) thyroid replicas from I-124 PET DICOM datasets by means of 3D printing. A possible field of application is the use of those phantoms for the calibration of gamma probes.
METHODS: After editing of the DICOM datasets using several software types and transferring into a dedicated stereolithography format, 10 fillable thyroid replicas (35-200 mL) made of polylactide acid were manufactured via 3D printing. All replicas were filled with a water-solution containing 3.5 MBq I-131 and applied to a standard neck phantom.

Over the last decade, researchers have developed a variety of new analytical and clinical diagnostic devices. These devices are predominantly based on microfluidic technologies, where biological samples can be processed and manipulated for the collection and detection of important biomolecules. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is the most commonly used material in the fabrication of these microfluidic devices. However, it has a hydrophobic nature (contact angle with water of 110°), leading to poor wetting behavior and issues related to the mixing of fluids, difficulties in obtaining uniform coating
