The Aberrant Behavior Checklist and the Behavior Problems Inventory: convergent and divergent validity.

This study was designed to compare and cross-validate two rating instruments [the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC) and the Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI)] for assessing maladaptive behavior. The BPI assesses three types of behavior problems: Self-Injurious Behavior (SIB), Stereotyped Behavior and Aggressive/Destructive Behavior. The ABC assesses five domains including these three. We collected data on 226 adults, mostly with severe or profound mental retardation, from a medium-sized developmental center. Individuals with elevated BPI scores generally had higher ABC scores; however, the ext

Gender differences in restricted and repetitive behaviors and interests in youth with autism.

Previous work has found gender differences in restricted and repetitive behaviors and interests (RRBI) for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Compared to girls, affected boys have increased stereotyped and restricted behaviors; however much less is known about gender differences in other areas of RRBI. This study aims to identify whether specific RRBI (i.e., stereotyped, self-injurious, compulsive, insistence on sameness, ritualistic, and restricted), as measured by item-level data on the Repetitive Behavior Scale-Revised (RBS-R), can distinguish girls from boys with ASD. Participants included 61

Repetitive behavior in 12-month-olds later classified with autism spectrum disorder.

OBJECTIVE: As compared to the utility of early emerging social communicative risk markers for predicting a later diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), less is known about the relevance of early patterns of restricted and repetitive behaviors. We examined patterns of stereotyped motor mannerisms and repetitive manipulation of objects in 12-month-olds at high and low risk for developing ASD, all of whom were assessed for ASD at 24 months. METHOD: Observational coding of repetitive object manipulation and stereotyped motor behaviors in digital recordings of the Communication and Symbolic

Behavioral neurotoxicity in adolescent and adult mice exposed to fenproporex during pregnancy.

We investigated the effects of gestational exposure to fenproporex, one of the most used anorectic drugs in Brazil, on the behavior of adolescent and adult pups (30 and 60 days of age, respectively). Pregnant Swiss mice were treated daily, by gavage, with 15 mg/kg of fenproporex chloride or water during the whole gestational period. Male pups were submitted to open-field, forced swimming test, tail suspension test and fenproporex-induced stereotyped behavior. The results demonstrated that gestational exposure to fenproporex induces antidepressant-like effect and decreases fenproporex-induced s

Perinatal fenvalerate exposure: behavioral and endocrinology changes in male rats.

The effects of maternal exposure to fenvalerate during the prenatal and postnatal periods of sexual brain differentiation were studied in adult male offspring. Behavioral (open field, stereotyped, and sexual behaviors), physical (sexual maturation, body and organ weights), endocrine (testosterone levels), and neurochemical (striatal and hypothalamic monoamine and respective metabolite levels) data were assessed. The results showed that there was no change in the age of testis descent or testis weight, nor were there changes in monoamine levels or stereotyped behavior. However, there were signi

Effects of prenatal immune activation on amphetamine-induced addictive behaviors: Contributions from animal models.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal environmental adversities may affect brain development and are associated with increased risk for schizophrenia, an illness with 50% comorbidity with addiction. Maternal immune activation by poly-inosinic-citidilic acid (Poly(I:C)) exposure can promote behavioral alterations consistent with schizophrenia symptoms in rodents. OBJECTIVES: Considering the vulnerability to addiction in patients with schizophrenia, we evaluated the interactions between prenatal Poly(I:C) administration and addiction in two animal models (behavioral sensitization and conditioned place preferenc

Age-related differences in the acoustic characteristics of male leopard seals, Hydrurga leptonyx.

During the breeding season, the underwater vocalizations and calling rates of adult male leopard seals are highly stereotyped. In contrast, sub-adult males have more variable acoustic behavior. Although adult males produce only five stereotyped broadcast calls as part of their long-range underwater breeding displays the sub-adults have a greater repertoire including the adult-like broadcast calls, as well as variants of these. Whether this extended repertoire has a social function is unknown due to the paucity of behavioral data for this species. The broadcast calls of the sub-adults are less

A dose-response analysis of the behavioral effects of (+)MK-801 in guinea pig: comparison with CPP.

The noncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist, dizocilpine maleate {(+)-5-methyl-10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a,d]-cyclohepten-5, 10-imine maleate} [(+)MK-801], has attracted considerable interest because of its potential use as an anticonvulsant and neuroprotectant. However, its cognitive side effects in humans have limited its use in human pharmacotherapy. Although the behavioral effects of (+)MK-801 have been documented in mouse, rat, pigeon, and rhesus monkey, there are no available data on its effects in guinea pig. The objective of this study was to conduct a dose-response analys

Effects of dopamine antagonists on neuronal histamine release in the striatum of rats subjected to acute and chronic treatments with methamphetamine.

In this study, we examined the changes in neuronal histamine (HA) release in the rat striatum after acute and repeated administration of methamphetamine (METH). We studied the regulation of METH-induced HA release by dopamine receptors and the relationship between METH-induced HA release and stereotyped behavior. Acute administration of METH (1 mg/kg) significantly increased HA release 60 min later. Pretreatments with the dopamine D2 antagonists sulpiride and haloperidol blocked the METH-induced increase of HA release, whereas pretreatment with a dopamine D1 antagonist, SCH23390, did not. More

Mazindol: anorectic and behavioral effects in female rats.

The anorectic and behavioral effects of mazindol (2.5, 5 and 10 mg/kg) were determined. The experiments comprized acute and chronic administration to female rats, and the effects were compared with those produced by 2.5 mg/kg of methamphetamine. The following evaluation parameters were considered: food intake, body weight, motor activity, and stereotyped behavior. Acute administration of the three doses of mazindol, as well as of the methamphetamine dose, decreased food intake. Administered chronically to female rats, mazindol (5 and 10 mg/kg) and methamphetamine induced loss of body weight du

Functional Significance of Conflicting Age and Wealth Cross-Categorization: The Dominant Role of Categories That Violate Stereotypical Expectations.

The purpose of the current study was to identify the functional significance of conflicting stereotypes and to identify the dominant category in such conflicts. In the present research we examined the conflicting crossed categories of age and wealth with regard to warmth and competence perceptions. It was found (Pilot Study and Study 1) that the old-rich targets presented a conflicting stereotype group in the perception of warmth, whereas young-poor targets presented a conflicting stereotype group in the perception of competence. In addition, the old stereotype dominated the warmth evaluation

Mixed stereotype content and attitudes toward students with special educational needs and their inclusion in regular schools in Luxembourg.

BACKGROUND: Students with special educational needs (SEN) remain one of the most socially excluded and vulnerable groups. To this extent, negative attitudes and stereotypes may impede their inclusion. Theoretical frameworks have suggested that stereotypes and attitudes elicit differential expectations and judgments, which in turn affect (social) behaviors. AIMS: In this study, we aimed to investigate the stereotypes and implicit attitudes held by a sample of Luxemburgish adults toward students with learning difficulties and challenging behavior. We also explored the adults' explicit attitudes

Test- and behavior-specific genetic factors affect WKY hypoactivity in tests of emotionality.

Inbred Wistar-Kyoto rats consistently display hypoactivity in tests of emotional behavior. We used them to test the hypothesis that the genetic factors underlying the behavioral decision-making process will vary in different environmental contexts. The contexts used were the open-field test (OFT), a novel environment with no explicit threats present, and the defensive-burying test (DB), a habituated environment into which a threat has been introduced. Rearing, a voluntary behavior was measured in both tests, and our study was the first to look for genetic loci affecting grooming, a relatively

Intelligent Recognition of Chinese Pangolin Stereotyped Pacing.

Pangolins, such as the critically endangered Chinese and Malayan species, often develop stereotypic behaviors in captivity. To automate the detection of these behaviors, we propose a video recognition method using an improved YOLO v8n-CBAM model. It detects pangolins and maps their image coordinates to real-world locations, generating movement trajectories. These are segmented and analyzed by a ResNet18 model to identify stereotypic behavior. Our improved YOLO model achieves 99.93% recall and 95.63% mAP@0.50:0.95. Trajectory distance accuracy reaches 98.48%, and stereotypic behavior periods ar

Deconstructing Hunting Behavior Reveals a Tightly Coupled Stimulus-Response Loop.

Animal behavior often forms sequences, built from simple stereotyped actions and shaped by environmental cues. A comprehensive characterization of the interplay between an animal's movements and its environment is necessary to understand the sensorimotor transformations performed by the brain. Here, we use unsupervised methods to study behavioral sequences in zebrafish larvae. We generate a map of swim bouts, revealing that fish modulate their tail movements along a continuum. During prey capture, larvae produce stereotyped sequences using a subset of bouts from a broader behavioral repertoire

Neurobehavioral effects of tetramisole in mice.

Acute toxicity and neurobehavioral effects of the veterinary anthelmintic tetramisole were examined in male albino mice. The 24-h median lethal doses of tetramisole were determined by the up-and-down method in mice after oral, subcutaneous and intraperitoneal administrations, and they were 110, 57 and 34 mg/kg, respectively. The intoxicated mice manifested nervousness, crouching, piloerection and tremor. Subcutaneous injection of tetramisole at 0.5 and 1mg/kg did not significantly affect general locomotor activity of the mice in 5-min open-field activity test or negative geotaxis performance a

Restricted vs. unrestricted wheel running in mice: Effects on brain, behavior and endocannabinoids.

Beneficial effects of voluntary wheel running on hippocampal neurogenesis, morphology and hippocampal-dependent behavior have widely been studied in rodents, but also serious side effects and similarities to stereotypy have been reported. Some mouse strains run excessively when equipped with running wheels, complicating the comparability to human exercise regimes. Here, we investigated how exercise restriction to 6h/day affects hippocampal morphology and metabolism, stereotypic and basal behaviors, as well as the endocannabinoid system in wheel running C57BL/6 mice; the strain most commonly us

Effect of naloxone and morphine on dopamine agonist-induced stereotypy in rats and guinea pigs.

Naloxone (0.80 mg/kg) and morphine (7.5 mg/kg) were given to rats or guinea pigs with increasing doses of amphetamine (0.5-6.0 mg/kg) to determine their respective effects on amphetamine-induced stereotypy. In contrast to the inhibiting and potentiating effect of these agents on apomorphine-induced stereotyped behavior, naloxone enhanced and morphine markedly attenuated amphetamine-induced stereotypy. Since other investigators have reported that drugs inhibiting release of dopamine block amphetamine-induced stereotypy and enhance apomorphine-induced stereotypy, whilst compounds stimulating the

Oxytocin and serotonin in the modulation of neural function: Neurobiological underpinnings of autism-related behavior.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is a group of generalized neurodevelopmental disorders. Its main clinical features are social communication disorder and repetitive stereotyped behavioral interest. The abnormal structure and function of brain network is the basis of social dysfunction and stereotyped performance in patients with autism spectrum disorder. The number of patients diagnosed with ASD has increased year by year, but there is a lack of effective intervention and treatment. Oxytocin has been revealed to effectively improve social cognitive function and significantly improve the social

Captive coyotes compared to their counterparts in the wild: does environmental enrichment help?

This article attempts to determine the effects of environment (captive or wild) and a simple form of environmental enrichment on the behavior and physiology of a nonhuman animal. Specifically, analyses first compared behavioral budgets and stereotypic behavior of captive coyotes (Canis latrans) in kennels and pens to their counterparts in the wild. Second, experiments examined the effect of a simple form of environmental enrichment for captive coyotes (food-filled bones) on behavioral budgets, stereotypies, and corticosteroid levels. Overall, behavioral budgets of captive coyotes in both kenne
