TMJ pain and dysfunction: relation between clinical and radiographic findings in the short and long-term.

Clinical examination of the stomatognathic system and radiographic examination of the temporomandibular joints (TMJ), including the submentovertical, the oblique lateral transcranial and the transmaxillary projections, were performed in 104 patients with TMJ pain/dysfunction. Seven years later these patients had a new clinical examination and 54 of them were radiographed again. Another 20 patients not primarily radiographed were also recalled after 7 yr and examined clinically and radiographically. The radiographic findings were correlated with the reported symptoms and clinical findings. Only

Effectiveness of Open Rigid Internal Fixation of Condylar Fracture Resulting in Temporomandibular Joint Function Recovery.

Background: Maxillofacial trauma can impair crucial functions of the stomatognathic system. Mandibular condyle fractures, in particular, often lead to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction. Methods: This study evaluated the effectiveness of open rigid internal fixation (ORIF) in restoring TMJ function, using the Helkimo Index to compare pre- and post-operative outcomes. Results: A total of 395 patients who underwent ORIF for condylar fractures were analyzed (302 males, 93 females). TMJ function improved significantly from baseline to 6-month follow-up (p < 0.001), with a mean reduction of

IRF6 and FGF1 polymorphisms in non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate in the Polish population.

Non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P) is the most common developmental defect that significantly affects the morphology and function of the stomatognathic system in children. The etiology of these birth defects is multifactorial, and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in IRF6 and FGF1 have been associated with NSCL/P. This study aimed to evaluate whether SNPs in IRF6, namely rs2013162, rs642961, rs2235373, and rs34010 in FGF1, are associated with NSCL/P occurrence in the Polish population. The study included 627 participants: 209 children with NSCL/P and 418 healthy

Influence of removable prostheses on mastication in elderly subjects with rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a prevalent disease in the elderly population, and it may affect the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the stomatognathic system. This study evaluated masticatory function in elderly patients with RA before and after oral rehabilitation with removable prostheses. Forty-five elders with partial or total edentulism who were using unsatisfactory removable prostheses were selected and assigned to 3 groups: RA with TMJ involvement, RA without TMJ involvement and healthy controls. Masticatory function was assessed in terms of masticatory performance (MP) and maximum bite

Functional impairment in submandibular gland of rats induced by 5-fluorouracil and calcium leucovorin.

One of the main clinical problems during chemotherapy is the occurrence of severe systemic toxicities, including those related to the stomatognathic system, which contribute to reducing the patient's quality of life. The most frequent oral complications are mucositis, dysgeusia, inflammation, gingival bleeding and decreased salivary flow or hyposalivation, a factor that predisposes to xerostomia, and other local complications that alter the homeostasis of the system. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the functional activity of salivary glands in Wistar rats subject to chemotherapy by m

[Masticatory system and maxillofacial prosthesis: From pathology to function recovering].

Maxillofacial prosthesis (MFP) can be defined as the art and science of esthetic and functional reconstruction of the facial bones, art because it uses hand-crafted and empirical rules, science because of its technical rigorism and its integration in medicine. MFP aims to multidisciplinary rehabilitate patients presenting with cutaneous and underlying structures defects, It also allows for functional speech and swallowing rehabilitation related to temporo-mandibular joint disorders. Whatever the origin, (traumatic, infectious ortumoral), surgical treatment of these TMJ disorders is usually not

Global human mandibular variation reflects differences in agricultural and hunter-gatherer subsistence strategies.

Variation in the masticatory behavior of hunter-gatherer and agricultural populations is hypothesized to be one of the major forces affecting the form of the human mandible. However, this has yet to be analyzed at a global level. Here, the relationship between global mandibular shape variation and subsistence economy is tested, while controlling for the potentially confounding effects of shared population history, geography, and climate. The results demonstrate that the mandible, in contrast to the cranium, significantly reflects subsistence strategy rather than neutral genetic patterns, with

Fetal pharyngeal distention--is it a normal component of fetal swallowing?

Fetal swallowing is one of the main mechanisms of amniotic fluid circulation. Swallowing mechanisms were studied in 34 healthy fetuses using modern ultrasound technology. The fetal lips and mouth, as well as tongue, pharynx, larynx, trachea and esophagus were surveyed in serial sagittal planes. Fetal swallowing movements were recorded and subsequently analyzed from the videotapes. All neonates were born at term in a satisfactory condition. Twenty-nine infants were breastfed, and five were bottle fed. No feeding problems were reported in these neonates. In 85% of fetuses, swallowing activity st

Correlations between the Visual Apparatus and Dental Occlusion: A Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: The development of visual functions takes place in the first months of postnatal life and is completed around the one year of age. In this period, the maturation of the retina and the visual pathways occur, and binocular bonds are established at the level of the visual cortex. During this phase and then for a few years, a certain plasticity of the visual functions remains, which seem therefore susceptible to change both in a pejorative sense (by pathogens) and in an improving sense (for example, by therapeutic measures). This plasticity involves also the oculomotor system. Due to t

[Results of follow-up of temporomandibular joint fractures in 30 children].

Disturbances of facial growth and occlusion as well as temporomandibular joint dysfunction are possible sequelae of temporomandibular joint fractures in children. In a follow-up study we examined 30 children with conservatively treated condylar fractures of the mandible (age at time of accident from 9 months to 13 years) regarding dysfunction or growth disturbances within the stomatognathic system. The mean interval between the accident and the follow-up was 4 years and 11 months. We found 6 cases with tilted occlusional planes in the 'en face' analysis, 3 of them with bilateral condylar fract

Prevalence of temporomandibular disorder in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) refer to a collection of pathological conditions that impact the stomatognathic system, often associated with psychiatric comorbidities. Interestingly, previous studies have reported a higher prevalence of TMD in individuals affected by irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a condition commonly linked to stress-induced psychosomatic factors. The aim of this systematic review is to clarify the prevalence of TMD in IBS-diagnosed patients. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases up to May

Functional limitation of the masticatory system in patients with bulbar involvement in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) with bulbar dysfunction affects the motor neurons responsible for controlling the muscles in the jaw, face, soft palate, pharynx, larynx and tongue. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the functional limitation of the jaw in patients with ALS and bulbar dysfunction who had upper motor neuron (UMN), lower motor neuron (LMN) or balanced involvement. One hundred and fifty-three patients with ALS and 23 controls were included. All participants answered using the 8-item Jaw Functional Limitation Scale (JFLS-8). Patients with ALS were grouped by neurolog

Vocal tract configurations in yodelling--prospective comparison of two Swiss yodeller and two non-yodeller subjects.

Yodelling consists of changes in pitch, presumably produced in different vocal registers. It is often assumed that vocal tract configuration is important to vocal registers and thus also to yodelling. We analysed vocal tract configuration in yodelling with dynamic real-time MRI (8 frames/second) in two (female and male) Swiss yodellers and two (female and male) professional classical singers. MR profiles showed clearly different vocal tract shapes for lower (vowel /[Formula: see text]/) and upper pitch (vowel /u/) for both the yodellers and the singers. These differences were similar for yodel
