OBJECTIVE: To investigate the symptom frequencies of a relatively large sample of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) sufferers and compare male and female symptom profiles.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 103 consecutive attendees at a clinic for PTSD were examined using a checklist of DSM-IV PTSD characteristics. The presence and absence of all symptoms was evaluated in a research interview. Some additional symptoms were also routinely asked about, such as mood lability, substance use, sex drive or libido. Symptom profiles of male and female sufferers of PTSD were compared using t

Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) has been implicated in the regulation of a wide range of behaviors including arousal, motor function, feeding, and reproduction. Because depressed patients are often hypercortisolemic and intracerebroventricular administration of CRH to experimental animals produces a syndrome reminiscent of depression, dysregulation of this compound has been suggested to be involved in the pathogenesis of depressive and anxiety disorders. Studies of cerebrospinal fluid CRH levels and clinical neuroendocrine tests in patients with anxiety and affective disorders have suppo

Work in a fire-brigade is very often associated with exposure to traumatic events. Some firefighters manifest post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. In spite of PTSD development, firefighters have to perform various tasks according to their responsibilities. The paper addresses the problem of the relationship between PTSD symptoms development and firefighters' attitudes to their job. The survey covered a representative sample of Polish firefighters (n = 974). The results showed that the higher level of PTSD symptoms the lower level of work satisfaction among firefighters; and the more

The debate continues over whether a posttraumatic response occurs in those who have sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI). The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of acute stress disorder (ASD) in the mild TBI population. Patients who sustained a mild TBI after a motor vehicle accident (N = 79) were assessed for the presence of ASD. ASD was diagnosed in 13.9% of patients, and 5.1% were diagnosed with subsyndromal ASD. Dissociative, reexperiencing, and avoidance symptoms were found to have moderate to high predictive power. This study highlights the significant number of patie

This paper describes the history of the development of understanding of psychological responses to traumatic life-events and their treatment. One major response, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), is a recognized condition which has appeared relatively recently in diagnostic manuals. PTSD is a condition of major significance, not only to mental health professionals, but also to trauma surgeons and allied professionals. This paper focuses on the current definition of PTSD in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10, 1992, World Health Organization) and the Diagnostic and Statist

Vietnam veterans (N = 232) recruited from three sources were assessed for suicidal thinking and behaviors, and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. Findings support the notion that suicidal thoughts are prevalent in this group, with veterans in psychotherapy reporting a greater likelihood of such symptoms (82.6%) than veterans in the community (35.7%) or those seeking assistance through a veteran's outreach center (66.7%). Thoughts of ending one's life and a previous suicide attempt were significantly correlated with a diagnosis of PTSD (r = .53, p < .001; and r = .

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can be caused by experiencing or witnessing a variety of harsh traumatic events. Rape, burglary, war, torture, violence, and other catastrophic events have been known to precipitate flashbacks, nightmares, and inability to cope with the demands of daily life. The symptoms associated with PTSD can interfere with work, sleep, appetite, relationships, and health. In a Veterans Administration hospital population, PTSD is not an uncommon patient problem: it usually results from witnessing and/or participating in war or military service-related circumstances. Th

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI, or concussion) is a debilitating condition that often leads to persistent cognitive and mental health problems post-injury. Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) are two most commonly occurring mental health problems following mTBI and are suggested to be strong contributors to the persistent post-concussion symptoms. Thus, it is important to understand the symptomatology of PTSD and MDD post-mTBI, to better inform targets for behavioral health interventions. Therefore, the current study examined the symptom structure of po

The increasing comorbidity of alcohol use disorder (AUD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a serious medical, economic, and social issue. However, the molecular toxicology and pathophysiological mechanisms of comorbid AUD and PTSD are not well understood and the identification of the comorbidity state markers is significantly challenging. This review summarizes the main characteristics of comorbidity between AUD and PTSD (AUD/PTSD) and highlights the significance of a comprehensive understanding of the molecular toxicology and pathophysio

OBJECTIVE: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and hypertension are highly prevalent among Veterans. Cognitive dispersion, indicating within-person variability across neuropsychological measures at one time point, is associated with increased risk of dementia. We examined interactive effects of PTSD symptom severity and hypertension on cognitive dispersion among older Veterans.
METHODS: We included 128 Vietnam-era Veterans from the Department of Defense-Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (DoD-ADNI) with a history of PTSD. Regression models examined interactions between PTSD symptom

In the wild, animals face a highly variable world full of predators. Most predator attacks are unsuccessful, and the prey survives. According to the conventional perspective, the fear responses elicited by predators are acute and transient in nature. However, the long-term, non-lethal effects of predator exposure on prey behavioral stress sequelae, such as anxiety and post-traumatic symptoms, remain poorly understood. Most experiments on animal models of anxiety-related behavior or post-traumatic stress disorder have been carried out using commercial strains of rats and mice. A fundamental que

AIM: Trauma-focused psychotherapies are recommended as first-line treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); however, treatment discontinuation remains a major challenge in routine clinical practice. This study examined treatment discontinuation and structured psychotherapy implementation among patients with PTSD and complex PTSD (CPTSD) in a post-disaster outpatient setting.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed anonymized clinical records from April 2016 to March 2021 at a psychiatric outpatient clinic in Minamisoma City, Fukushima, Japan. Patients with ICD-11 PTSD or

Reduced volumes in brain regions of interest (ROIs), primarily from adult samples, are associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We extended this work to children using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study® (N = 11,848; Mage = 9.92). Structural equation modeling and an elastic-net (EN) machine-learning approach were used to identify potential effects of traumatic events (TEs) on PTSD symptoms (PTSDsx) directly, and indirectly via the volumes 300 subcortical and cortical ROIs. We then estimated the genetic and environmental variation in the phenotypes. T

Periodic catatonia is a rare subtype of catatonia characterized by a variety of neuropsychiatric symptoms that follow a cyclical pattern. These episodes typically involve alternating phases of catatonic symptoms separated by periods of remission. Despite this condition being rare, it is still considered a medical emergency and usually requires inpatient care for assessment and treatment. Unfortunately, managing periodic catatonia can be challenging, largely because its underlying biological causes are not well understood and appear to be less clearly defined as compared to other forms of catat

Studies on war zones typically focus on post-traumatic reactions within the general population, often emphasizing specific demographics such as war veterans, younger individuals, or particular clinical groups. Research on post-conflict zones shares similar patterns, with some studies even exploring how trauma may be transmitted to future generations, particularly within refugee families. However, even when conducted in post-war settings, much of this research predominantly examines trauma transmission within family units. Understanding the post-war effects on communities, especially among teac

This case study explores the memory reconsolidation-based technique of reconsolidation of traumatic memories (RTM) to address complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD). Using the framework of CPTSD and the components of International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ), several presenting symptoms and the history of childhood trauma (adverse childhood experiences assessment) were assessed. The individual, based on the trauma-informed care approach, went through a total of eight sessions after the initial consultation that included RTM on index trauma events, reframing, and self-regulation techniqu
