OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Although office-based laser surgery applications for benign and premalignant lesions of the larynx are appealing, there are scant data on their complications and failures. We review office-based angiolytic laser surgery in patients with benign laryngeal pathology for rates of complication and failure.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review.
METHODS: Two hundred fifty-five patients who underwent in-office angiolytic laser surgery treatment over 4 years were reviewed. The criteria for complications and failures were based on postprocedure stroboscopy and clinical findi

Vocal education programs for teachers may prevent the emergence of vocal disorders; however, only a few studies have tried to evaluate the effectiveness of these preventive programs, particularly in the long term. Two hundred and sixty-four subjects, mostly kindergarten and primary school female teachers, participated in a course on voice care, including a theoretical seminar (120 minutes) and a short voice group therapy (180 minutes, small groups of 20 subjects). For 3 months, they had to either attend the vocal ergonomics norms and, as psychological reinforcement, they had to make out a dail

Voice disorders are a source of increasing concern as normal voice quality is a social demand for at least one third of the population in developed countries in cases where voice is an essential resource in professional exercise. In addition, the growing exposure to certain pathogenic factors such as smoking, alcohol abuse, air pollution, and acoustic contamination, and other problems such as gastro-esopharyngeal reflux or allergy as well as aging, aggravate voice disorders. Voice pathologies justify the assignment of larger resources to prevention policies, early detection, and less aggressiv

OBJECTIVE: To determine the clinical effects of injecting DiHA (a mixture of dextranomer molecules and 1% hyaluronan solution in equal proportions) as a "space filler" into the vocal folds of patients experiencing insufficient closure of the vocal folds resulting from either unilateral vocal fold paralysis or bowed vocal folds.
STUDY DESIGN: A consecutive series of patients with insufficient closure of the vocal folds treated with DiHA injections and prospectively followed up with videostroboscopy and voice recordings that were evaluated by expert panels.
METHODS: During a 21/2-year period,

OBJECTIVES: Stroboscopy is based on the assumption that the vibration of the vocal folds is stable and regular. Irregular vibrations, which are common in voice pathology, cannot easily be studied and described in a reliable way. Videokymography overcomes most of these drawbacks.
DESIGN: The use of the recently invented videokymography for studying vocal fold vibrations in patients is introduced.
METHOD: Videokymography, using a modified CCD-video camera, works in two modes: standard and high speed. In standard mode the vocal folds are displayed on a video monitor in the usual way, providing

INTRODUCTION: A vast majority of polyps appear at the predilection site of the vocal fold and therefore belong to the functional-traumatic group of vocal fold lesions. According to their size, vocal fold polyps may severely interfere with the glottal closure, and induce hoarseness, vocal fatigue, and frequently hyperkynetic pattern of voice production.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: A series of 699 polyps was operated by direct microlaryngoscopy (DML), indirect microstroboscopy (IMS), and indirect videostroboscopu (IVS). Postoperative functional results were estimated by stroboscopy. Based on the funct

BACKGROUND: Inadvertent injury to the vagus nerve or its branches during carotid endarterectomy can result in adductor vocal cord paralysis (hoarseness) and cricopharyngeal dysfunction (dysphagia) with aspiration, known as "double trouble." This study describes our experience in the management of this complication in cases where conservative treatment failed.
METHODS: All patients were examined by a vascular surgeon, a head and neck surgeon, and a speech therapist. Their examinations included comprehensive speech evaluation, video stroboscopy, video fluoroscopy, and methylene blue testing for

Voice is produced by a steady flow of air from the lungs, which is segmented at the laryngeal level into a series of air puffs. The segmentation is facilitated by periodic vocal fold vibrations under physiological conditions. In some cases, as in partial laryngectomy, segmentation of air stream is caused by vibrations of the false vocal folds. Here we report a case of an air stream segmentation mechanism at the laryngeal level producing an acceptable voice quality after fracture of the larynx and bilateral vocal fold paralysis. A lateral fixation of the left vocal fold was performed because of

Vestibular voice includes participation of larynx structures which are absent in physiological process. Vestibular phonation may be desired when vocal folds are damaged as in paralytic dysphonia, or undesired in marginal hyperfunction. Vestibular voice may result from psychogenic dysphonia - phononeurosis. The aim of the study is perceptive evaluation of vestibular voice, objective larynx visualization, acoustic and aerodynamic examination. The study included 40 patients: 20 with vestibular voice, 20 with euphonic voice. Voice quality has been evaluated using perceptual GRBAS scale. Endoscopic

OBJECTIVE: Multi-dimensional voice assessment is critical for monitoring recovery in patients treated with radiotherapy (RT) for early glottic carcinoma. This study investigated the longitudinal cross-parametric correlations between subjective (AVHI-10), functional (LVS), and objective (acoustic) voice measures at baseline and 6 months post-RT. METHODS: Thirty-seven patients with T1–T2N0M0 glottic carcinoma were prospectively evaluated. Spearman correlation matrices (ρ) were employed to analyze the relationships between the Voice Handicap Index-10 (AVHI-10), laryngeal videostroboscopy (LVS), a

OBJECTIVE: To consider the feasibility of diagnosing intrinsic laryngeal muscle myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) in dysphonic patients who demonstrated immediate symptom and stroboscopic finding improvement after laryngeal electromyography (LEMG) without further treatment.
METHODS: A chart review of patients who showed subtle vocal fold movement abnormalities on a stroboscopic examination and underwent ultrasonography (US)-guided LEMG was performed. Patients with vocal fold paralysis, mucosal lesions, spasmodic dysphonia, and vocal tremor on stroboscopic examination were excluded. Among them, p

OBJECTIVE: The pulsed dye laser (PDL) has been shown to be effective in the treatment of hypertrophic scars and keloids in dermatology. On the basis of histopathologic similarities between sulcus vocalis and scar tissue and numerous reports on the treatment of laryngeal lesions, especially scar tissue, with PDL, we evaluated the efficacy of treating sulcus vocalis with PDL. We named this surgical procedure PDL glottoplasty.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series with planned data collection.
SETTING: A university-based, tertiary care medical center.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Vocal process granuloma has been attributed to intubation, laryngopharyngeal reflux, and phonotraumatic/hyperfunctional vocal behaviors. Vocal process granuloma has recurrence rates following surgical excision approaching 92%. We hypothesize that a portion of persistent or idiopathic cases of vocal process granuloma result from underlying glottal insufficiency (GI) caused by paresis, scar, or atrophy. Our goal was to examine our vocal process granuloma population and determine the incidence of GI, treatment interventions, and outcomes.
