Mental Health Interventions in Middle Schools: A 10-Year Review of Research.

Schools can play an important role in addressing growing concerns about adolescent mental health. Mental health of high school students has predominantly been the focus in literature with less emphasis on younger adolescents. This review identified articles published in the last decade that described evaluations of middle school-based mental health interventions and randomized participants to an intervention or control condition. Fourteen interventions met the inclusion criteria. About two-thirds of interventions were based on mindfulness or cognitive behavioral therapy. Many trials utilized r

Incorporating the principles of the patient-centered medical home into a student-run free clinic.

As the health care delivery landscape changes, medical schools must develop creative strategies for preparing future physicians to provide quality care in this new environment. Despite the growing prominence of the patient-centered medical home (PCMH) as an effective model for health care delivery, few medical schools have integrated formal education on the PCMH into their curricula. Incorporating the PCMH model into medical school curricula is important to ensure that students have a comprehensive understanding of the different models of health care delivery and can operate effectively as phy

The acceptability, feasibility and impact of a lay health counsellor delivered health promoting schools programme in India: a case study evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Studies in resource-limited settings have shown that there are constraints to the use of teachers, peers or health professionals to deliver school health promotion interventions. School health programmes delivered by trained lay health counsellors could offer a cost-effective alternative. This paper presents a case study of a multi-component school health promotion intervention in India that was delivered by lay school health counsellors, who possessed neither formal educational nor health provider qualifications. METHODS: The intervention was based on the WHO's Health Promoting S

[Results of the School Health Service in La Chaux-de-Fonds between 1975 and 1979].

This is a balance sheet of the medical service in la Chaux-de-Fonds schools for the last five years (1975-1979). The activities of the School Medical Service (SMS) are clinical and paraclinical examinations, immunizations, and tuberculin tests, as well as health information. The number of students in three examined grades (1, 4, and 9) varies over the years, with a tendency of going down in the first grade since 1978. The following anomalies are checked and compared between grades and years; overweight, systolic murmurs, hernias, alterations of the tonsils and lymph glands, deviations of the v

[Implementing high-quality school health standards to promote joint prevention of common diseases and multimorbidity among students].

The main health problems faced by children and adolescents in China are constantly changing. Myopia, overweight and obesity, abnormal spinal curvature, and mental health issues have become the main health problems for children and adolescents. However, multidimensional health problems such as infectious diseases, chronic non-communicable diseases and injuries still coexist and present regional imbalances. Since these coexisting health problems usually have common behavioral and environmental factors, implementing joint prevention works for children and adolescents could improve the efficiency

There is something about oppression: Allies' perspectives on challenges in relationships with experts by experience.

The genuine and meaningful involvement of Experts by Experience in the education of health professionals has consistently demonstrated positive attitudinal change in students. These changes are essential if policy goals for recovery-oriented services and service user participation in mental health services are to be realized. To date academic roles for Experts by Experience have often relied on the support of allies. Despite the important role allies play, research investigating their experiences is limited. The aim of this research was to explore allies' views on supporting implementation of

The impact of facilitators and rural immersion on medical student engagement during a child and adolescent mental health videoconference workshop.

OBJECTIVE: Child and adolescent mental health (CAMH) disorders are a major public health problem in Australia, especially outside metropolitan areas. The issue is compounded by a shortage of child and adolescent psychiatrists (CAPs). CAMH receives minimal coverage in health professional training, training opportunities are scarce, and support for generalist health professionals, who treat most cases, is lacking. Novel approaches to early medical education and teaching are required to strengthen the available skilled workforce in rural and remote settings. METHOD: This qualitative study explor

Examining the presence of problem gambling awareness messages on college counseling center websites.

College students are more at-risk for developing a gambling problem than the general adult U.S. population. Information behavior and information seeking theories, as well as empirical evidence, indicate that one resource that may provide guidance for students dealing with this issue is the college counseling center website (CCW). This study addressed the presence and nature of problem gambling messages on CCWs. As a random sample, 203 CCWs were selected to assess how frequently they provided any information about problem gambling, as well as the specific types of communications CCWs offered on

Integration of Pharmacy Student Interns into a Naloxone Telephone Outreach Service.

Opioid overdose remains a significant public health issue in the United States and is the leading cause of accidental death. Naloxone has become increasingly accessible, with greater emphasis placed by health systems and pharmacies on distribution of the safety tool. While the utility of pharmacists in advancing this work is clear, there is limited research on the success of integrating pharmacy students into a naloxone outreach program. The purpose of this project was to implement and evaluate the success of integrating pharmacy student interns into a naloxone telephone outreach service for V

Decreasing reproductive and abortion care barriers: findings on the student health center's role from a student survey.

BACKGROUND: College-aged young adults in the US have low utilization and high need for reproductive healthcare. Multiple barriers to reproductive care exist. University Student Health Centers (SHCs) provide varying degrees of reproductive products and services. Recently, California legislated that public university SHCs add medication abortion to their care. METHODS: To examine existing attitudes and barriers to reproductive healthcare for public university students, we conducted an anonymous online survey at a large, diverse, urban coastal California State University. Students were asked abo

An interdisciplinary street outreach program to engage vulnerable neighbors in care.

Those experiencing poverty, homelessness, or behavioral health disorders are difficult to engage and maintain in health care services. These vulnerable populations experience unique barriers to engagement in health care services, which fuel health inequity. We need innovative approaches to address this need. This paper discusses the reciprocal relationship between a community center and a local university, which led to a street outreach program that provides a dynamic interprofessional experience for nursing, medical, and social work students and helps connect vulnerable populations to care. Building Power on "Mass&Cass": A Community-Centered Approach to Addressing Health Resource Gaps for Persons Experiencing Homelessness in Boston, MA, 2021.

In November 2021, two grassroots organizations in Boston, Massachusetts-a housing and health justice organization and a student-led nonprofit-established an initiative to provide persons experiencing homelessness (PEH) near the Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard ("Mass&Cass") intersection in Boston with access to free COVID-19 education and other wrap-around services. They partnered with hospitals, public health organizations, and advocacy groups to make this happen. This community-driven initiative serves as a model for how to enact a sustainable pipeline for PEH to receive health

[Factors associated with the demand for health services by Brazilian adolescents: the National School Health Survey (PeNSE), 2012].

The objectives of this study were to describe the demand for health services by adolescents and to identify associated factors. The study analyzed data from the National School Health Survey 2012 and calculated prevalence rates and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). Data analysis used age-adjusted logistic regression. Half of all students required health services and the proportion was higher in girls. Factors associated with demand for health services were white skin color, enrollment in private school, maternal schooling ≥ 12 years, sexual activity, injuries, toothache, attempts to maintain,

Addressing HIV/Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Pregnancy Prevention Through Schools: An Approach for Strengthening Education, Health Services, and School Environments That Promote Adolescent Sexual Health and Well-Being.

Adolescents' health behaviors and experiences contribute to many outcomes, including risks for HIV, other sexually transmitted diseases, and unintended pregnancy. Public health interventions and approaches addressing risk behaviors or experiences in adolescence have the potential for wide-reaching impacts on sexual health and other related outcomes across the lifespan, and schools are a critical venue for such interventions. This paper describes a school-based program model developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Division of Adolescent and School Health for preventing HIV

Using online interventions to deliver college student mental health resources: Evidence from randomized clinical trials.

This study evaluated the efficacy of Internet-based stress management programs for college students. This approach is particularly fitting for students owing to a lack of mental health resources on campus and to high levels of Internet use among students. Because a history of interpersonal trauma (IPT) is associated with more distress and poorer academic performance, IPT history was assessed as a moderator of intervention efficacy. Students (N = 365) were randomly assigned to a mindfulness plus present control intervention, a mindfulness only intervention, or a stress management information co

Addressing the Consequences of School Closure Due to COVID-19 on Children's Physical and Mental Well-Being.

Prolonged school closures are one of the most disruptive forces in the COVID-19 era. School closures have upended life for children and families, and educators have been forced to determine how to provide distance learning. Schools are also an essential source of nonacademic supports in the way of health and mental health services, food assistance, obesity prevention, and intervention in cases of homelessness and maltreatment. This article focuses on the physical and emotional toll resulting from school closures and the withdrawal of nonacademic supports that students rely on. The COVID-19 pan
