Regional levels of glucose, amino acids, high energy phosphates, and cyclic nucleotides in the central nervous system during hypoglycemic stupor and behavioral recovery.

The effects of insulin-induced hypoglycemic stupor and subsequent treatment with glucose on mouse cerebral cortical, cerebellar and brain stem levels of glucose, glycogen, ATP, phosphocreatine, glutamate, aspartate and GABA and on cerebral cortical and cerebellar levels of cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP have been measured. Hypoglycemia decreased glucose, glycogen and glutamate levels and had no effect on ATP levels in all three regions of brain. GABA levels were decreased only in cerebellum. Aspartate levels rose in cerebral cortex and brain stem, and creatine phosphate increased in cerebral cortex

Anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in the CSF, blood-brain barrier dysfunction, and neurological outcome: Studies in 8 stuporous and comatose patients.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the pathophysiologic mechanism of encephalopathy and prolonged comatose or stuporous state in severally ill patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHODS: Eight COVID-19 patients with signs of encephalopathy were tested for antibodies to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in the serum and CSF using a Food and Drug Administration-approved and independently validated ELISA. Blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity and immunoglobulin G (IgG) intrathecal synthesis were further tested using albumin and IgG indices. The CSF was also tested

Pulmonary Embolism during Stuporous Episodes of Catatonia Was Found to Be the Most Frequent Cause of Preventable Death According to a State Mortality Review: 6 Deaths in 15 Years.

Case reports have indicated that pulmonary embolism (PE) can be associated with deaths during episodes of catatonia. A 15-year death registry in Kentucky state psychiatric hospitals was reviewed for deaths during episodes of catatonia. From 2002 to May of 2016, reports of 96 deaths at these state psychiatric hospitals were found and reviewed by the state mortality committee. The charts of the identified catatonic patients were thoroughly reviewed. All 6 deaths occurred during episodes of what Fink and Taylor would call retarded catatonia and Ungvari would call acute stuporous catatonia. The de

Clinical assessment and short-term mortality prediction of older adults with altered mental status using RASS and 4AT tools.

BACKGROUND: Altered mental status (AMS) in older adults is a common reason for admission to emergency departments (EDs) and usually results from delirium, stupor, or coma. It is important to proficiently identify underlying factors and anticipate clinical outcomes for those patients. AIM: The primary objective of this study was to reveal and compare the clinical outcomes and etiologic factors of older patients with delirium, stupor, and coma. The secondary objective was to identify the 30-day mortality risk for those patients. METHOD: The study was conducted as prospective and observational

Nonconvulsive status epilepticus in thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.

Fluctuating neurologic symptoms, including confusion, stupor, and convulsions, are common signs in thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). We describe a patient with TTP who had a clinical seizure, intermittent stupor, and a declining course despite aggressive treatment. An EEG showed continuous rhythmic epileptiform discharges, and she improved with anticonvulsants. Fluctuating stupor in TTP has generally been attributed to microvascular occlusive disease, but nonconvulsive status epilepticus is a treatable condition that can cause similar symptoms.

Pharmacological effects produced by intracerebral injection of drugs in the conscious mouse.

A method has been described for the study of the central effects produced by the intracerebral injection of drugs in the unanaesthetized mouse. The effects observed were in good agreement with those obtained after similar injections in cats, dogs and human beings. After intracerebral injection, drugs of diverse structure produced certain generalized effects: changes in positioning of the tail, stupor, hyperexcitability and tachypnoea. Both acetylcholine and methacholine produced an akinetic seizure and depression, but the latter compound also caused lacrimation and salivation. Atropine produce

Electroconvulsive therapy for an older patient with schizophrenia complicated by nonconvulsive status epilepticus during catatonia: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) can present with symptoms resembling catatonia, such as stupor, staring, and immobility. Distinguishing between the two conditions using electroencephalography (EEG) is crucial. However, reports of NCSE coexisting with catatonia are rare. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of catatonia associated with schizophrenia complicated by NCSE. A 77-year-old woman with a 30-year history of well-controlled schizophrenia developed stupor and was admitted to our hospital. EEG revealed evolving spike-and-wave complexes, leading to a diagnosis of NCSE.

Complex dissociation following maternal suicide attempt in a 17-year-old female: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Dissociative disorders involve disruptions in memory, identity, sensory awareness, and motor control, often triggered by psychological distress. Dissociative amnesia may appear as either retrograde or anterograde memory loss, and dissociative stupor as well as conversion disorder are also considered part of the dissociative disorders spectrum. Cases presenting with generalized amnesia (both retrograde and anterograde), dissociative stupor, and conversion disorder are rare. Here, I report a unique case of a 17-year-old female exhibiting this combination of symptoms following her mot

Distinctive sleep complaints and polysomnographic findings in antibody subgroups of autoimmune limbic encephalitis.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep disturbances are being increasingly recognized in association with autoimmune encephalitis (AIE). We investigated the prevalence of sleep-related symptoms and polysomnographic features of patients with AIE and the long-term outcomes in these patients in a multi-center, prospective study from Turkey. METHODS: We prospectively evaluated patients with definite AIE in a common database including demographics, AIE-related and sleep-related symptomatology. Maximum and latest modified Rankin scores (mRS) and Liverpool Outcome Score (LOS) were noted. RESULTS: Of 142 patients, 87

[Unconsciousness and clouded awareness].

Stupor and coma are clinical states in which patients have impaired responsiveness or are unresponsive to external stimulation and are either difficult to arouse or are unarousable. The term stupor refer to states between alertness and coma. An alteration in arousal represents an acute life-threatening emergency, requiring prompt intervention for preservation of life and brain function.

Isopropyl alcohol intoxication.

Three patients had neurologic signs due to isopropyl alcohol (IPA) intoxication. Over a several-week period, a known alcoholic developed apathy, confusion, ataxia, and hyperreflexia. During this period, there was no ethanol available to him, and he denied use of other intoxicants. He was found stuporous in the hospital after drinking IPA and admitted to IPA abuse during the preceding weeks. Two other men were admitted in a stupor after large ingestions of IPA. Intoxication with IPA has two different presentations: stupor in a known alcoholic and encephalopathy of unknown cause in individuals w

[Importance of osmolality in diabetic emergency-situations].

It is reported on 37 diabetic patients with coma or stupor. The discussion of the case histories leads to the conclusion that moderate hyperosmolality greatly affects the condition and prognosis of the patients. In those instances, where diabetic coma or stupor was complicated by pneumonia, myocardial infarction or shock, life could be saved only, when on admission osmolality or osmolarity was found to be lower than 334 mosm/kg and 328 mosm/1, respectively.

[An Adolescent Case of ASD Presenting with Persistent Catatonia and Epileptic EEG Discharge].

A 26-year-old man developed a catatonic state after his grandmother's death and the Great East Japan Earthquake. He was admitted to hospital because of the prolonged severe stupor. Electroencephalography (EEG) revealed focal (F3 electrode) and generalized epileptic abnormalities. He was administered antiepileptic agents and benzodiazepines, but his stupor did not improve in spite of a reduced frequency of epileptic EEG abnormalities. His clinical his- tory did not suggest any psychotic disorders. Thereafter, extensive physical examinations were performed, but an organic cause of the stupor was

Familial occurrence of adult-type neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis.

The adult type of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL) occurred in a 49-year-old man and his 51-year-old sister. They showed episodic stuporous and psychotic states, mental retardation, generalized convulsions, and ichthyosis vulgaris. At autopsy the woman had excessive accumulation of lipofuscin throughout the CNS. The degree of neuronal lipopigment accumulation was very severe in the neurons of the thalamus, substantia nigra, inferior olivary nuclei, motor nuclei of the brain stem, and cerebral cortex. Mental symptoms, such as stupor, excitement, hallucinations, and delusions, were the predo

Heat stress is associated with disruption of ion balance in the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria.

Thermal tolerance is important in determining the spatial and temporal distributions of insects but the mechanisms which determine upper thermal limits remain poorly understood. In terrestrial insects heat tolerance is unlikely to be limited by oxygen supply but in some arthropods, heat stress has been shown to cause haemolymph hyperkalaemia which is known to have detrimental effects on neuromuscular excitability. It is however unresolved if heat-induced hyperkalemia is the cause or the result of cellular heat injury. To address the putative role of heat-induced hyperkalemia we quantified chan
