BACKGROUND: Patients with head and neck neoplasms receive therapeutic neck dissections which may include the submandibular gland unilaterally or bilaterally. The clinical consequences of salivary gland resection could be reduced salivary output, altered cariogenic microflora, and increased incidence of dental caries.
METHODS: This investigation evaluated whole salivary flow rates of patients who had received unilateral (n = 29) or bilateral (n = 8) submandibular gland resections and compared them with noncancer control subjects (n = 29).

The usefulness of fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in the diagnosis and treatment of submandibular gland lesions is not well known. The 210 FNACs taken from submandibular gland lesions at Turku University Central Hospital between 1984 and 1991 were reviewed. Of these FNACs, 78 samples from primary lesions were confirmed histologically. Within this subset 10 FNACs were taken from benign neoplasms, all of which were correctly classified (sensitivity 100 per cent; specificity 88 per cent). A case of true malignant mixed tumor of the submandibular gland is reported. The submandibular tumor, occurring in a 52-year-old man, started to grow rapidly after a long history without any change in size. Laryngopharyngeal or cervical pain following ingestion of foreign bodies is one of the most frequently encountered emergencies in otolaryngologic practice. Although most of these foreign bodies can be easily removed under laryngoscopic examination without any complications, surgical removal may be required when foreign bodies migrate extraluminally. This report describes two rare cases of ingested fishbones that had migrated, one each to the thyroid gland and submandibular gland. Extraluminal migration fishbones should always be considered in otolaryngologic clinics.

A mucocoele or extravasation of mucus is common in minor salivary glands, but unusual in major ones. Those from the submandibular gland are a diagnostic challenge and conventional management includes excision of the associated gland. We describe a 27-year-old man with a mucocoele of the submandibular gland that presented as a lateral cervical swelling and looked like a plunging ranula. The cystic lesion was completely excised and, to our knowledge, this is the first published case in which the submandibular gland was saved with no recurrence up to two years postoperatively.
