Balancing Multi-Target Semi-Supervised Medical Image Segmentation With Collaborative Generalist and Specialists.

Despite the promising performance achieved by current semi-supervised models in segmenting individual medical targets, many of these models suffer a notable decrease in performance when tasked with the simultaneous segmentation of multiple targets. A vital factor could be attributed to the imbalanced scales among different targets: during simultaneously segmenting multiple targets, large targets dominate the loss, leading to small targets being misclassified as larger ones. To this end, we propose a novel method, which consists of a Collaborative Generalist and several Specialists, termed CGS.

Predicting cognitive decline in Parkinson's disease using FDG-PET-based supervised learning.

BackgroundCognitive impairment is a common symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD) that increases in risk and severity as the disease progresses. An accurate prediction of the risk of progression from the mild cognitive impairment (MCI) stage to the dementia (PDD) stage is an unmet clinical need.MethodsWe investigated the use of a supervised learning algorithm called the support vector machine (SVM) to retrospectively stratify patients on the basis of brain fluorodeoxyglucose-PET (FDG-PET) scans. Of 43 patients with PD-MCI according to the baseline scan, 23 progressed to PDD within a 5-year period

Validation of a Cyclic Algorithm to Proxy Number of Lines of Systemic Cancer Therapy Using Administrative Data.

PURPOSE: Researchers are automating the process for identifying the number of lines of systemic cancer therapy received by patients. To date, algorithm development has involved manual modifications to predefined classification rules. In this study, we propose a supervised learning algorithm for determining the best-performing proxy for number of lines of therapy and validate this approach in four patient groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed BC Cancer pharmacy records from patients' cancer diagnosis until end of follow-up (cohort-specific, 2014/2015). We created and valid

The machine learning methods to analyze the using strategy of antiplatelet drugs in ischaemic stroke patients with gastrointestinal haemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: For ischaemic stroke patients with gastrointestinal haemorrhage, stopping antiplatelet drugs or reducing the dose of antiplatelet drugs was a conventional clinical therapy method. But not a study to prove which way was better. And the machinery learning methods could help to obtain which way more suit for some patients. METHODS: Data from consecutive ischaemic stroke patients with gastrointestinal haemorrhage were prospectively collected. The outcome was a recurrent stroke rate, haemorrhage events, mortality and favourable functional outcome (FFO). We analysed the data using conve

Stable warfarin dose prediction in sub-Saharan African patients: A machine-learning approach and external validation of a clinical dose-initiation algorithm.

Warfarin remains the most widely prescribed oral anticoagulant in sub-Saharan Africa. However, because of its narrow therapeutic index, dosing can be challenging. We have therefore (a) evaluated and compared the performance of 21 machine-learning techniques in predicting stable warfarin dose in sub-Saharan Black-African patients and (b) externally validated a previously developed Warfarin Anticoagulation in Patients in Sub-Saharan Africa (War-PATH) clinical dose-initiation algorithm. The development cohort included 364 patients recruited from eight outpatient clinics and hospital departments i

Are smartphones and machine learning enough to diagnose tremor?

BACKGROUND: Patients with essential tremor (ET), Parkinson's disease (PD) and dystonic tremor (DT) can be difficult to classify and often share similar characteristics. OBJECTIVES: To use ubiquitous smartphone accelerometers with and without clinical features to automate tremor classification using supervised machine learning, and to use unsupervised learning to evaluate if natural clusterings of patients correspond to assigned clinical diagnoses. METHODS: A supervised machine learning classifier was trained to classify 78 tremor patients using leave-one-out cross-validation to estimate perf

A Multi-Frequency Self-Supervised Fusion Model for EEG-Based Dementia Classification.

BACKGROUND: Brain source localization technology enables precise characterization of the spatial distribution of neural activity, serving as a crucial tool for exploring the pathological mechanisms underlying dementia. However, effectively integrating complementary diagnostic information from source localization features across multiple frequency bands remains a major challenge to enhancing classification performance and model interpretability. METHODS: An attention-based multi-frequency self-supervised fusion model (AM-SSF) is proposed to address this issue. Independent contrastive self-supe

Skeleton-guided sparse anchors for rotated instance segmentation in cell microscopy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Accurate instance segmentation of clustered cells in microscopy images remains a major bottleneck, as traditional methods often break down when objects of varying sizes and shapes touch or overlap. We introduce A2B-IS, a novel one-stage framework that represents each cell with a pixel-level mask and a rotated bounding box, specifically designed to improve segmentation quality in densely packed regions. METHODS: A2B-IS decouples mask and box prediction into parallel branches to simplify the pipeline and reduce error propagation. We incorporate a Gaussian skeleton map

Multi-view semi-supervised adversarial attention network for drug repurposing.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Drug repositioning represents an efficient strategy for uncovering new therapeutic indications for approved drugs. However, most existing prediction methods rely on similarity data and overlook biological and chemical information. In addition, data sparsity and randomly selected negative samples further limit predictive performance. METHODS: We propose the Multi-view Semi-Supervised Adversarial Attention Network (M-SSAAN) for drug-disease association prediction. M-SSAAN combines structural and similarity embeddings to generate multi-view representations, and employs

Weakly and semi-supervised segmentation of uterus using coarse annotations in MRI.

Endometrial cancer (EC) seriously threatens women's lives via invasion and metastasis, potentially causing multi-system organ failure. Accurate segmentation of the uterus on MR images has important implications for determining the depth of myometrial infiltration in EC, and for benign uterine diseases such as uterine fibroids, it enables efficient quantification of uterine volume and clear visualization of anatomical contours, thereby providing essential support for clinical disease assessment and preoperative planning. However, current deep learning-based uterine segmentation relies on manual

CMOS: Confidence-Guided Multi-Scale Semi-Supervised Segmentation for Retinal Layers in OCT Images.

Accurate segmentation of retinal layers in optical coherence tomography (OCT) images is crucial for the quantitative analysis and diagnosis of ophthalmic diseases. However, existing segmentation methods face two significant challenges. First, the scarcity of high-quality annotated data severely restricts the performance of supervised learning approaches. Second, structural alterations in retinal layers caused by lesions, combined with inconsistencies in imaging quality, further complicate the task of achieving precise segmentation. To address these challenges, we propose a novel Confidence-Gui

Rethinking masked image modelling for medical image representation.

Masked Image Modelling (MIM), a form of self-supervised learning, has garnered significant success in computer vision by improving image representations using unannotated data. Traditional MIMs typically employ a strategy of random sampling across the image. However, this random masking technique may not be ideally suited for medical imaging, which possesses distinct characteristics divergent from natural images. In medical imaging, particularly in pathology, disease-related features are often exceedingly sparse and localized, while the remaining regions appear normal and undifferentiated. Add

Weakly supervised label propagation algorithm classifies lung cancer imaging subtypes.

Aiming at the problems of long time, high cost, invasive sampling damage, and easy emergence of drug resistance in lung cancer gene detection, a reliable and non-invasive prognostic method is proposed. Under the guidance of weakly supervised learning, deep metric learning and graph clustering methods are used to learn higher-level abstract features in CT imaging features. The unlabeled data is dynamically updated through the k-nearest label update strategy, and the unlabeled data is transformed into weak label data and continue to update the process of strong label data to optimize the cluster

Joint localization and classification of breast masses on ultrasound images using an auxiliary attention-based framework.

Multi-task learning (MTL) methods have been extensively employed for joint localization and classification of breast lesions on ultrasound images to assist in cancer diagnosis and personalized treatment. One typical paradigm in MTL is a shared trunk network architecture. However, such a model design may suffer information-sharing conflicts and only achieve suboptimal performance for individual tasks. Additionally, the model relies on fully-supervised learning methodologies, imposing heavy burdens on data annotation. In this study, we propose a novel joint localization and classification model

Semi-supervised liver segmentation based on local regions self-supervision.

BACKGROUND: Semi-supervised learning has gained popularity in medical image segmentation due to its ability to reduce reliance on image annotation. A typical approach in semi-supervised learning is to select reliable predictions as pseudo-labels and eliminate unreliable predictions. Contrastive learning helps prevent the insufficient utilization of unreliable predictions, but neglecting the anatomical structure of medical images can lead to suboptimal optimization results. PURPOSE: We propose a novel approach for semi-supervised liver segmentation using contrastive learning, which leverages u

A Combined mmWave Tracking and Classification Framework Using a Camera for Labeling and Supervised Learning.

Millimeter wave (mmWave) radar poses prosperous opportunities surrounding multiple-object tracking and sensing as a unified system. One of the most challenging aspects of exploiting sensing opportunities with mmWave radar is the labeling of mmWave data so that, in turn, a respective model can be designed to achieve the desired tracking and sensing goals. The labeling of mmWave datasets usually involves a domain expert manually associating radar frames with key events of interest. This is a laborious means of labeling mmWave data. This paper presents a framework for training a mmWave radar with

Facial nerve image enhancement from CBCT using supervised learning technique.

Facial nerve segmentation plays an important role in surgical planning of cochlear implantation. Clinically available CBCT images are used for surgical planning. However, its relatively low resolution renders the identification of the facial nerve difficult. In this work, we present a supervised learning approach to enhance facial nerve image information from CBCT. A supervised learning approach based on multi-output random forest was employed to learn the mapping between CBCT and micro-CT images. Evaluation was performed qualitatively and quantitatively by using the predicted image as input f

Identification of right ventricular dysfunction with LogNNet based diagnostic model: A comparative study with supervised ML algorithms.

Right ventricular dysfunction (RVD) is strongly associated with increased mortality in patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE), making its early detection crucial. Identifying RVD risk factors rapidly, accurately, and economically within the acute PE population could significantly improve diagnosis and treatment, potentially reducing mortality rates. This study evaluates the performance of LogNNet and supervised machine learning (ML) models for diagnosing RVD using a repeated stratified hold-out validation procedure. An ensemble-based LogNNet model is proposed for practical application. Th
