Combining imaging flow cytometry and machine learning for high-throughput schistocyte quantification: A SVM classifier development and external validation cohort.

BACKGROUND: Schistocyte counts are a cornerstone of the diagnosis of thrombotic microangiopathy syndrome (TMA). Their manual quantification is complex and alternative automated methods suffer from pitfalls that limit their use. We report a method combining imaging flow cytometry (IFC) and artificial intelligence for the direct label-free and operator-independent quantification of schistocytes in whole blood. METHODS: We used 135,045 IFC images from blood acquisition among 14 patients to extract 188 features with IDEAS® software and 128 features from a convolutional neural network (CNN) with K

Using machine learning and an electronic tongue for discriminating saliva samples from oral cavity cancer patients and healthy individuals.

The diagnosis of cancer and other diseases using data from non-specific sensors - such as the electronic tongues (e-tongues) - is challenging owing to the lack of selectivity, in addition to the variability of biological samples. In this study, we demonstrate that impedance data obtained with an e-tongue in saliva samples can be used to diagnose cancer in the mouth. Data taken with a single-response microfluidic e-tongue applied to the saliva of 27 individuals were treated with multidimensional projection techniques and non-supervised and supervised machine learning algorithms. The distinction

Phybrata Sensors and Machine Learning for Enhanced Neurophysiological Diagnosis and Treatment.

Concussion injuries remain a significant public health challenge. A significant unmet clinical need remains for tools that allow related physiological impairments and longer-term health risks to be identified earlier, better quantified, and more easily monitored over time. We address this challenge by combining a head-mounted wearable inertial motion unit (IMU)-based physiological vibration acceleration ("phybrata") sensor and several candidate machine learning (ML) models. The performance of this solution is assessed for both binary classification of concussion patients and multiclass predict

Lightweight Deep Neural Network Method for Water Body Extraction from High-Resolution Remote Sensing Images with Multisensors.

Rapid and accurate extraction of water bodies from high-spatial-resolution remote sensing images is of great value for water resource management, water quality monitoring and natural disaster emergency response. For traditional water body extraction methods, it is difficult to select image texture and features, the shadows of buildings and other ground objects are in the same spectrum as water bodies, the existing deep convolutional neural network is difficult to train, the consumption of computing resources is large, and the methods cannot meet real-time requirements. In this paper, a water b

Pain Recognition With Electrocardiographic Features in Postoperative Patients: Method Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: There is a strong demand for an accurate and objective means of assessing acute pain among hospitalized patients to help clinicians provide pain medications at a proper dosage and in a timely manner. Heart rate variability (HRV) comprises changes in the time intervals between consecutive heartbeats, which can be measured through acquisition and interpretation of electrocardiography (ECG) captured from bedside monitors or wearable devices. As increased sympathetic activity affects the HRV, an index of autonomic regulation of heart rate, ultra-short-term HRV analysis can provide a re

Establishment and evaluation of prediction model for multiple disease classification based on gut microbial data.

Diseases prediction has been performed by machine learning approaches with various biological data. One of the representative data is the gut microbial community, which interacts with the host's immune system. The abundance of a few microorganisms has been used as markers to predict diverse diseases. In this study, we hypothesized that multi-classification using machine learning approach could distinguish the gut microbiome from following six diseases: multiple sclerosis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome, acquired immune deficiency syndrome, str

Feature Selection and Comparison of Machine Learning Algorithms in Classification of Grazing and Rumination Behaviour in Sheep.

Grazing and ruminating are the most important behaviours for ruminants, as they spend most of their daily time budget performing these. Continuous surveillance of eating behaviour is an important means for monitoring ruminant health, productivity and welfare. However, surveillance performed by human operators is prone to human variance, time-consuming and costly, especially on animals kept at pasture or free-ranging. The use of sensors to automatically acquire data, and software to classify and identify behaviours, offers significant potential in addressing such issues. In this work, data coll

Automated multi-model framework for malaria detection using deep learning and feature fusion.

Malaria remains a critical global health challenge, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. While traditional methods for diagnosis are effective, they face some limitations related to accuracy, time consumption, and manual effort. This study proposes an advanced, automated diagnostic framework for malaria detection using a multi-model architecture integrating deep learning and machine learning techniques. The framework employs a transfer learning approach that incorporates ResNet 50, VGG16, and DenseNet-201 for feature extraction. This is followed by feature fusion and dimensionalit

Prediction of dengue cases using the attention-based long short-term memory (LSTM) approach.

This research proposes a 'temporal attention' addition for long-short term memory (LSTM) models for dengue prediction. The number of monthly dengue cases was collected for each of five Malaysian states i.e. Selangor, Kelantan, Johor, Pulau Pinang, and Melaka from 2011 to 2016. Climatic, demographic, geographic and temporal attributes were used as covariates. The proposed LSTM models with temporal attention was compared with several benchmark models including a linear support vector machine (LSVM), a radial basis function support vector machine (RBFSVM), a decision tree (DT), a shallow neural n

Solving the class imbalance problem using ensemble algorithm: application of screening for aortic dissection.

BACKGROUND: Imbalance between positive and negative outcomes, a so-called class imbalance, is a problem generally found in medical data. Despite various studies, class imbalance has always been a difficult issue. The main objective of this study was to find an effective integrated approach to address the problems posed by class imbalance and to validate the method in an early screening model for a rare cardiovascular disease aortic dissection (AD). METHODS: Different data-level methods, cost-sensitive learning, and the bagging method were combined to solve the problem of low sensitivity cause

A conflict-based approach for real-time road safety analysis: Comparative evaluation with crash-based models.

An innovative approach for real-time road safety analysis is presented in this work. Unlike traditional real-time crash prediction models (RTCPMs), in which crash data are used in the training phase, a real-time conflict prediction model (RTConfPM) is proposed. This model can be trained using surrogate measures of safety, and can therefore be applied even in situations in which highly spatial/temporal-accurate crash data are unavailable or unreliable. The application of an RTConfPM consists of using a set of input variables recorded during a given time interval, to predict whether there will b

Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation prediction based on HRV analysis and non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm III.

This paper presents a method that able to predict the paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). The method uses shorter heart rate variability (HRV) signals when compared to existing methods, and achieves good prediction accuracy. PAF is a common cardiac arrhythmia that increases the health risk of a patient, and the development of an accurate predictor of the onset of PAF is clinical important because it increases the possibility to electrically stabilize and prevent the onset of atrial arrhythmias with different pacing techniques. We propose a multi-objective optimization algorithm based on the
