This study presents an innovative approach to improve implant biointegration and reduce implant-associated infections using porous poly(vinyl formal) nanocomposite matrices incorporated with gold nanoparticles and antimicrobial/anticancer drugs for plastic surgery applications. The porous matrices were characterized using physicochemical techniques and in vitro biochemical assays. Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare and life-threatening condition characterized by thrombocytopenia, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, and potential multi-organ involvement. We describe our experience of working in plastic and reconstructive surgery in Uganda over the last 10 years. There is a high burden of disease, a health system that is under resourced, and few qualified physicians to provide healthcare for a principally rural population. Purpura fulminans associated with meningococcemia is a devastating disease in children. The tissue loss can be extensive and difficult to determine at the outset. The authors suggest a strategy to manage these wounds with the goal of preserving as much tissue and function as possible. Despite great advances in modern medicine, postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) continue to be a significant problem without a definitive cure. This article describes a prospective study conducted with 143 plastic surgery patients at a single institution between 1998 and 2000 to identify preoperative risk factors for PONV that may be specific to plastic surgery patients. In a retrospective review of 1177 children presenting for plastic surgical procedures, investigations were performed in 487 and abnormal results were found in 138 as defined by variation from the local laboratory reference range. Most of the abnormalities were of no clinical significance. Twenty one children had abnormal haemoglobin results (the lowest was 9 g/dl) and 101 children had clinically insignificant platelet or white cell abnormalities. One child, with a family history of sickle cell trait, was confirmed as sickle-cell trait. No case was postponed as a result of these investigations.
