This randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of a 10-week intervention incorporating imagery and breathing exercises on swimming performance, mental toughness, and cardiac coherence in adolescent swimmers. Nineteen licensed swimmers (aged 13–18 years) were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (n = 9), receiving daily 15-min imagery and breathing sessions in addition to regular training, or a control group (n = 10), receiving standard training alone. Pre- and post-intervention assessments included 200-m freestyle performance, the Sports Mental Toughness Questionnaire (

Many animals use adaptive locomotor strategies to traverse the physical boundaries between aquatic, aerial, and terrestrial environments; these strategies can provide insight into not only evolutionary relationships but novel bio-inspired designs. Insects capable of locomotion both underwater and on land can offer a compelling window into the underlying mechanics of amphibious locomotion. This study focuses on understanding how aquatic hexapods (Dytiscidae and Notonectidae) transition their locomotion from dry land to shallow water. Using high-speed videography and kinematic tracking, we quant

Fish swim with four main gaits-anguilliform, subcarangiform, carangiform, and thunniform-produced by waves along varying portions of the body. However, how muscle activation length influences swimming performance remains poorly understood. We present a reconfigurable robotic fish that replicates all four gaits in a single platform by rapidly tuning its body stiffness. Vacuum-driven layer jamming muscles in four tensegrity joints enable quick (≤1 s) stiffness modulation (stiffness ratio of 46.6) and gait switching. In thunniform gait, the robot reaches 1.24 body lengths per second, whereas in a

Background: As a non-weight-bearing full-body exercise, swimming may reduce inflammation and boost anti-inflammatory agents to decrease the risk of cardiovascular, neurological, and rheumatological disorders. This systematic review examines the current evidence on the role of swimming exercise in modulating immune responses through inflammatory pathways. Methods: First, the PubMed and Scopus databases were searched through December 2024 for studies on swimming and inflammation. The initial search using keywords yielded 509 articles; 102 met the inclusion criteria after screening for relevance,

Recent studies have reported that endurance exercise enhances mitochondrial function, facilitating discussions of its potential as a therapeutic strategy for mitochondrial diseases caused by the accumulation of mutant mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). In this study, we assessed the effects of endurance exercise on muscle pathology in a mitochondrial disease mouse model (mito-miceΔ) that is characterized by severe clinical phenotypes owing to the predominant accumulation of mtDNA with a large-scale deletion (ΔmtDNA). Contrary to expectations that endurance exercise may enhance mitochondrial function,

BACKGROUND: Critical swimming velocity (CV) is widely used as an index for setting intensity in endurance training (IT). This study aimed to examine the effects of varying repetitive swimming distances on physiological and stroke parameters during IT at CV.
METHODS: Eleven male national-level collegiate swimmers participated in all-out 200 and 400 m front crawl swims to determine the CV. The participants then completed three interval training sets at CV: 5×400 m (400-m IT), 10×200 m (200-m IT), and 20×100 m (100-m IT) interval swims at the CV with rest periods of 60, 30, and 15 s, respectivel

PURPOSE: Postural control deteriorates following a transition between two environments, highlighting a sensory conflict when returning to natural conditions. Aquatic immersion offers new perspectives for studying postural control adaptation in transitional situations. Our aim is to study immediate and post-task static postural control adaptation on land after a prolonged fin swimming exercise in total immersion.
METHODS: Standing static postural control was assessed in 14 professional or recreational SCUBA divers (11 men, 3 women; 33.21 ± 10.70 years), with eyes open and closed, before, immed

Asthma is a complex medical problem for which currently available treatment can be incompletely effective. This case report describes a 49 year old woman who had suffered from asthma since her teenage years that resolved after she took up regular open water swimming. After sharing this case report with an international open water swimming community on social media, over one hundred people with asthma commented that their symptoms had also improved after taking up this activity. The mechanism whereby open water swimming might alleviate asthma has not been established. Possibilities include bene

AbstractEastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) are sessile, relying on a larval phase to disperse in estuaries. Oyster larval swimming behavior can alter dispersal trajectories and patterns of population connectivity. Experiments were conducted to test how both (1) acclimation time to new environmental conditions and (2) larval swimming behavior change with salinity and larval age. Acclimation time to changes in salinity was longest in lower salinity (6 ppt) and decreased with age. To test changes in behavior with salinity, larvae were placed into four salinities (6, 10, 16, and 22 ppt) where

BACKGROUND: Cardiac arrhythmias have not been previously reported in horses while swimming.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the type and frequency of encountered arrhythmias during repetitive swimming cycles.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive observational study.
METHODS: Sixteen horses swam five pool lengths (75 m), each separated by an active recovery walk. Continuous electrocardiograms (ECGs) were recorded (n = 80) and analysed during the pre-swim, swim and active-recovery periods. Arrhythmias were categorised as sinus arrhythmia (SA), sinus block, sinus pause (compensatory and non-compensatory), second

Danio rerio (zebrafish) is an elective model organism for the study of vertebrate development because of its high degree of homology with human genes and organs, including bone. Zebrafish embryos, because of the optical clarity, small size, and fast development, can be easily used in large-scale mutagenesis experiments to isolate mutants with developmental skeletal defects and in high-throughput screenings to find new chemical compounds for the ability to revert the pathological phenotype. On the other hand, the adult zebrafish represents another powerful resource for pathogenic and therapeuti

Flagella are the well-known structural appendages used by bacteria for motility. Although generally reported to be non-motile, the enteropathogenic bacterial species Escherichia albertii produces flagella intermittently. We found that E. albertii expressed flagella under specific environmental conditions. After several generations (involving 4 to 12-h incubations), six of the twelve strains we investigated displayed swimming motility in various aquatic environments, including pond water containing nutrients from pigeon droppings (10% suspension) as well as in 20 × -diluted tryptic soy broth. Jellyfish are a successful and diverse class of animals that swim via jet propulsion, with swimming performance and propulsive efficiency being related to the animal's feeding ecology and body morphology. The Rhizostomeae jellyfish lack tentacles but possess four oral lobes and eight trailing arms at the centre of their bell, giving them a body morphology quite unlike that of other free-swimming medusae. The implications of this body morphology on the mechanisms by which thrust is produced are unknown. Here, we determined the wake structure and propulsive efficiency in the blue-blubber jellyfi

While disinfection of swimming pools is indispensable for microbiological safety, it may lead to the formation of disinfection by-products. Most studies agree that inhalation exposure is the predominant pathway of the associated health risks, but assumptions are based on concentrations measured in water and evaporation models. Pool water and air were sampled in 19 swimming pools. Trihalomethanes were detected in all sites; chloroform being the most abundant species. Concentrations ranged between 12.8-71.2 μg/L and 11.1-102.2 μg/m3 in pool water and air, respectively. The individual lifetime ca

Swimming Induced Pulmonary Edema, or SIPE, is an emerging condition occurring in otherwise healthy individuals during surface swimming or diving that is characterized by cough, dyspnea, hemoptysis, and hypoxemia. It is typically found in those who spend time in cold water exercise with heavy swimming and surface swimming, such as civilian training for iron Man, triathalon, and military training. We report the case of a highly trained young female swimmer in excellent cardiopulmonary health, who developed acute alveolar pulmonary oedema in an open water swimming training diagnosed in the emerge

Swimming-induced pulmonary oedema/edema (SIPO/SIPE) is likely to become commoner with increasing popularity of endurance sports meaning an increased awareness by participants, organisers and medical personnel is important, especially as individuals are at increased risk of future life threatening episodes and drowning if an accurate diagnosis and appropriate advice are not given. The most important risk factors we identified are a highly trained individual, competitive exercise, hypertension and cold environment.

Attempts to measure the propulsive forces produced by swimming dolphins have been limited. Previous uses of computational hydrodynamic models and gliding experiments have provided estimates of thrust production by dolphins, but these were indirect tests that relied on various assumptions. The thrust produced by two actively swimming bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) was directly measured using digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV). For dolphins swimming in a large outdoor pool, the DPIV method used illuminated microbubbles that were generated in a narrow sheet from a finely porous h

We determined if cutaneous hyperalgesia and pain-induced c-Fos overexpression in the spinal cord produced by repeated forced swimming (FS) stress in the rat were related to changes in GABA neurotransmission by studying spinal release of GABA and the effect of positive modulation of GABA-A receptors with diazepam. Male rats were daily submitted to 10-20 min of either forced swimming or sham swimming (SS) for 3 consecutive days. Two days later, spinal GABA release was estimated by in vivo microdialysis. In other set of rats, either diazepam (2 mg/kg, i.p.) or saline was administered 1h before ei

A piston prosthesis in stapedioplasty significantly modifies the function of the normal ossicular chain. Due to the fact that the ear works as a pressure receptor, a piston prosthesis will be displaced at ambient air pressure changes in a different way than the normal stapes. Our ear is constantly exposed to these pressure changes in daily live, for example during swallowing, with tubal opening, with wind gusts at the external ear, during flying, or diving. Temporal bone experiments showed that elevated static pressures, like in tympanometry, can displace a piston up to 0.5mm in the vestibule.
