Neurotological studies on the role of the sympathetic nervous system in the formation of traumatic vertigo of cervical origin.

To test the validity of the hypothesis that irritation of the cervical sympathetic nerves is a cause of hypertonicity of the cervical soft supporting tissues, especially the deep nuchal muscles, and that this hypertonicity is a cause of traumatic vertigo of cervical origin, we examined 44 vertigo cases with whiplash injury by testing equilibrium function and EMG discharges from the neck before and after administration of drugs affecting the sympathetic receptors. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Administration of iso-proterenol (beta-receptor stimulant) caused a significant increase in

Exploring the mechanisms connecting the sympathetic nervous system and type 2 diabetes: Focus on renal denervation.

The interplay between sympathetic nervous system activation and metabolic disorders, particularly type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and hypertension, has been increasingly recognized as a critical factor in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. This review explores the potential mechanisms linking sympathetic overactivity to insulin resistance (IR) and T2DM, highlighting the role of renal denervation (RDN) as a promising therapeutic intervention. Sympathetic activation contributes to metabolic dysregulation by increasing plasma fatty acids, enhancing hepatic gluconeogenesis, and impairing panc

Inhibition of either the sympathetic or parasympathetic nervous system increases tonic immobility duration in laying hens.

Tonic immobility (TI) is a temporary state where a chicken remains immobile after restraint. It is a commonly used fear test in research, where a longer latency to right is equated with more fear. Despite its commonality, there is limited research done on the physiological systems that underlie TI. The objective of our study was to examine the roles of the sympathetic (SNS) and parasympathetic nervous systems (PNS) on TI. In experiment 1, sixteen Dekalb White hens (43 weeks of age) were given 0.1 mL/kg of either saline as a control (CON), labetalol (5 mg/mL) to inhibit the SNS (LAB), or glycop

Interaction between SGLT2 and the sympathetic nervous system in normal and various cardiovascular metabolic disease states.

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have been shown to suppress cardiovascular events and are widely used for treating diabetes, chronic heart failure and chronic kidney disease. Although the underlying mechanisms by which SGLT2 inhibitors suppress cardiovascular events are not entirely clear, several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the cardiorenal protective effects of SGLT2 inhibitors. One of these involves sympathoinhibition. In vitro, SGLT2 expression is upregulated by norepinephrine, and SGLT2 inhibitors have been shown to attenuate SGLT2 expression and normalize th

It's cool to be stressed: body surface temperatures track sympathetic nervous system activation during acute stress.

The acute stress response can be considered the primary evolutionary adaptation to maximise fitness in the face of unpredictable environmental challenges. However, the difficulties of assessing physiology in natural environments mean that comparatively little is known about how response variation influences fitness in free-living animals. Currently, determining acute stress physiology typically involves blood sampling or cardiac monitoring. Both require trapping and handling, interrupting natural behaviour, and potentially biasing our understanding toward trappable species/individuals. Importa

Changes in sympathetic nervous system activity after renal denervation: results from the randomised Oslo RDN study.

PURPOSE: Sympathetic nervous system (SNS) over-activity is associated with essential hypertension. Renal sympathetic denervation (RDN) possibly lowers office- and ambulatory blood pressure (BP) in patients with treatment-resistant hypertension (TRH). We aimed to assess the effect of RDN compared to drug adjustment on SNS activity among patients with TRH by measuring plasma catecholamines and heart rate variability (HRV) during stress tests. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with TRH were randomised to RDN (n = 9) or Drug Adjustment (DA) (n = 10). We measured continuous HRV and beat-to-beat-BP u

Stress and brain immunity: Microglial homeostasis through hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal gland axis and sympathetic nervous system.

Stress has been well documented to bring about various clinical disorders, ranging from neurodegeneration, such as Parkinson's (PD) and Alzheimer's diseases (AD), to metabolic disorders including diabetes mellitus. Importantly, microglia, immunocompetent cells in the brain, have been shown to be involved in these clinical disorders. In the recent studies aiming to clarify the microglial responses, microglia are found to be quite responsive to stressful events, such as acute, subchronic, chronic stress, and social defeat stress. However, the mechanisms of these stress response on microglial act

Microscopic Study of Nervous System Plasticity: Interactions of Sympathetic Nerves with Neurons of Intraocular Hippocampal Transplants.

Functional interactions of sympathetic fibers innervating the iris with the neurons of central origin in intraocular transplants of the rat hippocampus were studied by optic, confocal, and electron microscopy. After formaldehyde fixation, fluorescent dye Dil was applied to the upper cervical ganglion; the dye migrated to the transplant by lateral diffusion via axons. Sympathetic nerves labeled with fluorescent dye grew into the neurotransplants along perivascular membranes of blood vessels. In addition, some fluorescent axons were identified in the transplant parenchyma. Electron microscopy sh

Sympathetic Nervous System Control of Carbon Tetrachloride-Induced Oxidative Stress in Liver through α-Adrenergic Signaling.

In addition to being the primary organ involved in redox cycling, the liver is one of the most highly innervated tissues in mammals. The interaction between hepatocytes and sympathetic, parasympathetic, and peptidergic nerve fibers through a variety of neurotransmitters and signaling pathways is recognized as being important in the regulation of hepatocyte function, liver regeneration, and hepatic fibrosis. However, less is known regarding the role of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) in modulating the hepatic response to oxidative stress. Our aim was to investigate the role of the SNS in h

Sleep apnea in heart failure: implications of sympathetic nervous system activation for disease progression and treatment.

Mortality risk in heart failure relates to the degree of chronic sympathetic nervous system activation. Do acute increases in central sympathetic outflow, as occur nightly in patients with sleep apnea, augment this risk? This review explores 4 novel concepts: 1) sleep disordered breathing is common in heart failure, 2) the acute effects of sleep apnea and the chronic effects of heart failure on the sympathetic nervous system are additive when these conditions coexist, 3) such convergence has adverse clinical and prognostic implications, and 4) treating sleep apnea can attenuate sympathetic ner

Autonomic nervous system dysfunction in children with severe tetanus: dissociation of cardiac and vascular sympathetic control.

The medical records of ten pediatric patients with a clinical diagnosis of tetanus were reviewed retrospectively. The heart rate and blood pressure of all tetanus patients were measured noninvasively every hour during the first two weeks of hospitalization. Six of ten tetanus patients presented clinical evidence of sympathetic hyperactivity (group A) and were compared with a control group consisting of four children who required mechanical ventilation for diseases other than tetanus (group B). Heart rate and blood pressure simultaneously and progressively increased to a maximum by day 7. The i

Sympathetic nervous system overactivity in hypertensive patients with chronic renal failure--role of upright body position.

OBJECTIVE: The renal functional consequences of an activated sympathetic nervous system and plasma atrial natriuretic hormone (ANP) in various renal diseases are not well described. We hypothesize that norepinephrine (NE) and ANP have antagonizing effects on renal hemodynamics in diseased kidneys. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Plasma NE, ANP. glomerular filtration rate (GFR), effective renal plasma flow (ERPF) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) were measured in the upright position in healthy controls (n = 9) and hypertensive patients with reduced GFR (n =11). The same parameters were compared between

Cardiovascular consequences of loss of supraspinal control of the sympathetic nervous system after spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) with resultant quadriplegia or high paraplegia is associated with significant dysfunction of the sympathetic nervous system. This alteration of sympathetic nervous system activity occurs as a consequence of loss of supraspinal control of the sympathetic nervous system and is further complicated by at least three subsequent phenomena that occur below the level of SCI: reduced overall sympathetic activity, morphologic changes in sympathetic preganglionic neurons, and peripheral alpha-adrenoceptor hyperresponsiveness. Reduced sympathetic activity below the level of SCI ap

Mechanisms responsible for postmenopausal hypertension in a rat model: Roles of the renal sympathetic nervous system and the renin-angiotensin system.

Hypertension in postmenopausal women is less well controlled than in age-matched men. The aging female SHR is a model of postmenopausal hypertension that is mediated in part by activation of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and by the renal sympathetic nervous system. In this study, the hypothesis was tested that renal denervation would lower the blood pressure in old female SHR and would attenuate the antihypertensive effects of AT1 receptor antagonism. Retired breeder female SHR were subjected to right uninephrectomy (UNX) and left renal denervation (RD) or UNX and sham, and 2 weeks later,

Polymorphisms of genes encoding components of the sympathetic nervous system but not the renin-angiotensin system as risk factors for orthostatic hypotension.

OBJECTIVE: The genetic background of orthostatic hypotension, an important risk factor for future cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, was investigated. DESIGN AND METHODS: The study subjects comprised 415 community-dwelling individuals, who were free from any cardiovascular complications, aged 50 years or older (mean age 70.5 +/- 9 years). Basal systolic blood pressure (SBP) was measured twice in supine posture after resting for more than 10 min. The orthostatic change in SBP was determined at 1 min and 3 min after standing up. The maximum change in SBP after standing was determined. Orth

Nifedipine-sensitive blood pressure component in hypertensive models characterized by high activity of either sympathetic nervous system or renin-angiotensin system.

High blood pressure (BP) of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) is maintained by enhanced activity of sympathetic nervous system (SNS), whereas that of Ren-2 transgenic rats (Ren-2 TGR) by increased activity of renin-angiotensin system (RAS). However, both types of hypertension are effectively attenuated by chronic blockade of L-type voltage-dependent calcium channel (L-VDCC). The aim of our study was to evaluate whether the magnitude of BP response elicited by acute nifedipine administration is proportional to the alterations of particular vasoactive systems (SNS, RAS, NO) known to modulate

Activation of Sympathetic Nervous System Drives Dry Eye Onset Via Norepinephrine-β2-Adrenergic Receptor Signaling in Mice.

PURPOSE: Dry eye disease (DED) and sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activation have clear association with chronic environmental and psychogenic stress. However, the relationship of SNS activation with DED remains incompletely understood. This study aims to explore the role and mechanism of SNS activation in dry eye pathogenesis. METHODS: DED was induced in mice using scopolamine under desiccating stress. Systemic SNS ablation and local norepinephrine (NE) depletion were performed through intraperitoneal 6-OHDA and subconjunctival DPS-4 injection. Topical NE was applied to healthy and Adrb2-/
