Acardiac twin fetus with severe hydrops fetalis and bilateral talipes varus deformity.

Twin reversed-arterial-perfusion syndrome (TRAPS) is a rare complication of monochorionic twin pregnancies. TRAPS is characterized by the hemodynamic dependence of a "recipient" twin from a "pump" twin. The "recipient" twin exhibits lethal abnormalities, such as acardia and acephaly. Circulatory failure of the normal twin derives from the existence of arterio-arterial and veno-venous anastomoses within the placenta that allow retrograde perfusion of the acardiac twin by blood coming from the normal twin. Acardiac twinning is the most extreme manifestation of the twin-twin transfusion syndrome.

Overcorrection and generalized joint laxity in surgically treated congenital talipes equino-varus.

Fifty patients with 70 previously operated clubfeet were assessed for overcorrection (using Tachdjian's flat foot grade) and generalized joint laxity. Twenty-eight patients (40 feet) had signs of generalized joint laxity using the Biro score and of these 25 feet were overcorrected. Of the 22 patients (30 feet) who did not have signs of joint laxity, only three overcorrected. This difference was statistically significant (P<0.001). A significant correlation exists between flat foot grade and laxity score (P<0.01). Overcorrection is a complication largely ignored in the published literature but

[Analysis of association between 5' HOXD gene and idiopathic congenital talipes equinovarus].

OBJECTIVE: Four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in HOXD10, HOXD12 and HOXD13 genes were chosen to investigate SNP and haplotypes distribution in idiopathic congenital talipes equinovarus nuclear pedigrees. METHODS: Genotypes of 4 SNPs in 84 idiopathic congenital talipes equinovarus nuclear pedigrees were analyzed by restriction fragment length polymorphism and DNA sequencing. Analysis of association between SNP locus and idiopathic congenital talipes equinovarus was performed using ETDT software. Haplotypes and their frequencies in 84 nuclear pedigrees were established and analyzed by T

Clinical and radiographic appearance of congenital talipes equinovarus after successful nonoperative treatment.

Thirty-one children with 49 feet after successful nonoperative treatment for congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) by redressements, hypoallergic adhesive bands, and plaster casts underwent follow-up. At the follow-up, the patients ranged in age from 4.2 years to 12.3 years (average, 8.3 years). The initial type of the deformity was as follows: type I (mild), 18 feet; type II (intermediate), 29 feet; type III (severe), two feet. Mild supination of the forefoot in five feet, isolated excavation in three, and adduction greater than physiological in two feet were the only persistent elements of t

Factors Related to Relapse of Congenital Talipes Equinovarus (CTEV) After the Ponseti Method.

BACKGROUND: Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) is one of the common congenital disorders in pediatric orthopedic practice that affects a large group of children. It is a combination of four parts of deformity that affect either a single foot or both feet. Our aim in this study is to estimate the prevalence and incidence of CTEV and to evaluate the risk factors that lead to relapse in some children to avoid relapse in future and complex surgical interventions, as well as to improve the final outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study for the cases of CTEV was conducted to e

Prenatal diagnosis and genetic etiology analysis of talipes equinovarus by chromosomal microarray analysis.

BACKGROUND: With the advancement of molecular technology, fetal talipes equinovarus (TE) is believed to be not only associated with chromosome aneuploidy, but also related to chromosomal microdeletion and microduplication. The study aimed to explore the molecular etiology of fetal TE and provide more information for the clinical screening and genetic counseling of TE by Chromosomal Microarray Analysis (CMA). METHODS: This retrospectively study included 131 fetuses with TE identified by ultrasonography. Conventional karyotyping and SNP array analysis were performed for all the subjects. They w

Variations in arterial pedal circulation in idiopathic congenital talipes equinovarus: a systematic review.

Variations in pedal circulation in congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) are well documented. There is a reported risk of vascular injury to the posterior tibial artery (PTA) during operative procedures for CTEV, potentially leading to necrosis and amputation. The aim of this systematic review was to identify the most common anomalies in arterial pedal circulation in CTEV and to determine the relevance of these to clinical practice. The systematic review was registered on PROSPERO and was carried out according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta Analyses guidelines by

Patient-Based Long-Term Results of the Surgical Treatment of Congenital Talipes Equinovarus.

UNLABELLED: Long-term results of surgical treatment for congenital talipes equinovarus are documented in the literature but mainly in correlation with clinical and radiographic objective criteria. We present a retrospective study of 48 patients who underwent surgical correction (extended Cincinnati type "a la carte" approach) in our department with an average of 17 years' follow-up. Patients were interviewed and completed a validated disease specific instrument, which evaluates foot function as well as patients' satisfaction, the use of orthotics, shoe size, and the impact of this operation in

Congenital talipes equinovarus in Papua New Guinea: a difficult yet potentially manageable situation.

Reports in the literature have suggested a high incidence of congenital deformities, including congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), in many Pacific Islands. This study performed a retrospective analysis of cases of CTEV in an isolated region of Papua New Guinea over a 2-year period. Data was collected on the incidence of CTEV, together with an analysis of initial treatment and outcome. The incidence of CTEV was 2.7 per 1,000 live births per year. A peak incidence of CTEV births in September suggested that maternal anaemia secondary to malaria was a significant risk factor. Good functional ou

Assessment of calf volume in Congenital Talipes Equinovarus by computer analysed digital photography.

The development of evidence-based approaches to the Congenital Talipes Equinovarus (CTEV) is impaired by the diversity of assessment techniques available, many of which have not been validated. Highly objective evaluation techniques that reflect the deformity and permit comparison between studies may lack the necessary link to functional features that are paramount to the patient, namely pain and mobility. Calf wasting is an acknowledged but little investigated component of the pathology. The rapid evolution of digital photography and computerised analytical techniques has yielded an opportuni

Simultaneous correction of congenital vertical talus and talipes equinovarus using the Ponseti method.

Talipes equinovarus (clubfoot) and congenital vertical talus are commonly seen as isolated deformities in the newborn; however, the case that we described in this article entailed a classic talipes equino varus on the left and a calcaneovalgus on the right. Both deformities were successfully corrected with manipulation therapy and, ultimately, surgical release of the tendoAchillis.

Soft tissue Ilizarov correction of congenital talipes equinovarus--5 to 10 years postsurgery.

The aim of this study was to address concerns regarding maintenance of correction of foot deformity after soft tissue Ilizarov distraction in relapsed clubfeet. We retrospectively reviewed the results of Ilizarov surgery of 19 rigid clubfeet in 14 children. The postoperative follow-up was at least 5 years (range, 5-10 years). All patients were assessed using the International Clubfoot Study Group score. This is a comprehensive scoring system published in 2003, incorporating morphological, functional, and radiological assessments. Patient and parent satisfaction was also assessed. Using the Int

Mid-trimester ultrasound diagnosis of isolated talipes equinovarus: accuracy and outcome for infants.

Seventeen fetuses were diagnosed with isolated congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) on mid-trimester ultrasound at the Royal Women's Hospital, Melbourne, between January, 1992 and December 1995. Sixteen of the 17 cases had an amniocentesis performed and all karyotypes were normal. The remaining case was phenotypically normal, except for a clubfoot. None of the pregnancies was complicated by any of the recognized intrauterine environmental causes of CTEV. Four of the babies were delivered prematurely and all survived the neonatal period. Six (35%) infants did not have CTEV at birth, although 2

The demographics of talipes equinovarus in Indiana, with a particular emphasis on comparisons between clubfoot types.

Talipes equinovarus (TEV) can be an isolated idiopathic deformity or associated with various syndromes. The purpose of our study was to examine the demographics of TEV in Indiana. All TEV patients from 2010 to 2019 from our institution were reviewed, recording standard demographic variables. The socioeconomic level of the family was determined using the 2018 Area Deprivation Index (ADI). There were 568 patients; 456 had idiopathic TEV and 112 syndromic. Within the idiopathic group, 69.1% were male, 92.1% were typical and 7.9% were atypical. Medical issues during the pregnancy occurred in 19.5%

Congenital talipes equinovarus: a systematic review of relapse as a primary outcome of the Ponseti method.

AIMS: The Ponseti method is the benchmark treatment for the correction of clubfoot. The primary rate of correction is very high, but outcome further down the treatment pathway is less predictable. Several methods of assessing severity at presentation have been reported. Classification later in the course of treatment is more challenging. This systematic review considers the outcome of the Ponseti method in terms of relapse and determines how clubfoot is assessed at presentation, correction, and relapse. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospectively registered systematic review was carried out accordi

Outcome of Percutaneous Tenotomy in the Management of Congenital Talipes Equino Varus by Ponseti Method.

Congenital talipes equino varus (CTEV) is a common complex congenital anomaly affecting approximately 1 per 900 live births in Bangladesh. Current trends in the treatment of idiopathic clubfoot have shifted from extensive surgical release to more conservative techniques. The Ponseti method that includes manipulation, serial casting, percutaneous tenotomy and bracing has recently become very popular for the management of CTEV with reported excellent outcomes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of Percutaneous Tenotomy in the treatment of equinus deformity of idiopathic clubf
