Visuo-postural adaptation during the acquisition of a visually guided weight-shifting task: age-related differences in global and local dynamics.

The effects of aging on the acquisition of a novel visuo-postural coordination task were addressed at two levels: (a) changes in the intersegmental coordination (local dynamics) (b) changes in the coupling of postural sway to the visual driving stimulus (global dynamics). Twelve elderly (age: 71.2 +/- 6.4 years; height: 169.3 +/- 3.8 cm; mass: 72.4 +/- 6.1 kg) and 12 young women (age: 27.1 +/- 4.9 years; height: 178.3 +/- 2.9 cm; mass: 56.7 +/- 4.1 kg) practiced a visually guided Weight-Shifting (WS) task while standing on a dual force platform. The participants were asked to keep the vertical

The evolution of fatigue in remote tower controllers: evidence from eye-tracking analysis.

With the increasing deployment of remote tower operations (RTO) in air traffic management, understanding how fatigue evolves and manifests during task execution has become essential for ensuring operational safety. This study investigates the dynamic effects of active fatigue on eye movement behavior in remote tower controllers using a simulated RTO environment. 13 trainee controllers completed identical control tasks under alert and fatigued states, during which 8 eye movement features spanning saccade, fixation, blink, and pupil dimensions are continuously recorded. To capture temporal trend

Robot-Mediated Asymmetric Connection Between Humans Can Improve Performance Without Increasing Effort.

UNLABELLED: Whether working together to move a table or supporting a child learning to ride a bike, physically connected individuals exchange haptic information to improve motor performance. However, this improvement occurs at the cost of additional effort for the more skilled partner. OBJECTIVE: Here, we hypothesize that an asymmetric connection, consisting of a stiffer link to the less skilled partner and a more compliant link to the more skilled partner, could improve task performance without additional effort in collaborative tasks. METHODS: Through computational modelling, we first test

The interplay between cognition, functional and dual-task gait in persons with a vestibular disorder versus healthy controls.

Close links exist between vestibular function and cognition. Dual-task (DT) tests may have ecological validity to assess the impact of daily life cognitive-motor demands in people with vestibular dysfunction (PwVD), functional gait and falls risk. The present paper aimed at building predictive models for functional gait under DT conditions, while clarifying the impact of vestibular dysfunction, individual characteristics, varying task types and motor-cognitive demands. Case-controlled observational study with 39 PwVD and 62 healthy participants. The Functional Gait Assessment (FGA), with and w

Impact of anodal high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation of medial prefrontal cortex on stroop task performance and its electrophysiological correlates. A pilot study.

Medial prefrontal cortex (MPC) has been associated with a wide range of cognitive functions; however, its specific role in interference control is not fully understood. The current study investigates the role of MPC in interference control by externally stimulating it with an electric current and studying associated behavioral and neurophysiological markers. Participants randomly assigned to experimental and sham groups were administered with a high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) of 2 mA for 15 min. They performed a classic color-word Stroop task before, during, a

Dual-tDCS over the right prefrontal cortex does not modulate stop-signal task performance.

Stopping an already initiated action is crucial for human everyday behavior and empirical evidence points toward the prefrontal cortex playing a key role in response inhibition. Two regions that have been consistently implicated in response inhibition are the right inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and the more superior region of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). The present study targets both regions with non-invasive brain stimulation to investigate their role in response inhibition. Thus dual-prefrontal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) was applied to both IFG and DLPFC in

Validating the walking while talking test to measure motor, cognitive, and dual-task performance in ambulatory individuals with multiple sclerosis.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is associated with demyelination of the central nervous system that negatively impacts both motor and cognitive function, resulting in difficulty performing simultaneous motor and cognitive tasks, or dual-tasks. Declines in dual-tasking have been linked with falls in MS; thus, dual-task assessment with the Walking While Talking Test (WWTT) is commonly utilized in the clinical setting. However, the validity and minimal detectable change (MDC) of the WWTT has not been established for persons with MS. The primary objective of the study was to establish the WW

Functional parameters, wrist posture deviations and comfort: A comparison between a computer mouse and a touch pen as input devices.

BACKGROUND: Performing common computer tasks such as pointing, clicking, and dragging requires repetitive movements that cause musculoskeletal disorders in the wrists and hands. Given the growing use of touch screens and touch pens, further studies on the ergonomics of these devices are needed. This study aimed to compare a touch pen and an ordinary computer mouse in terms of movement time, error rate, wrist posture, and comfort of use. METHODS: Performance parameters (movement time and error rate), wrist postures, and comfort when using a mouse and a touch pen were measured based on ISO 9241

Change of Direction Assessment Following Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Review of Current Practice and Considerations to Enhance Practical Application.

Change of direction (CoD) has been indicated as a key mechanism in the occurrence of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during invasion sports. Despite these associations, assessments of knee function in athletic populations at the time of return to sport following ACL reconstruction (ACLr) have often focused on strength and single-leg hop tests, with a paucity of evidence to describe the CoD characteristics. Therefore, the aim of this narrative review was to describe the movement strategies exhibited following ACLr during CoD tasks and to critically analyze the range of tests that have b

A new modular mechanism that allows full detachability and cleaning of steerable laparoscopic instruments.

BACKGROUND: Ever since the introduction of laparoscopic surgery, researchers have been trying to add steerability to instruments to allow the surgeon to operate with better reachability and less tissue interaction force. Traditional solutions to introduce this often use a combination of springs, cables, pulleys, and guiding structures, resulting in instruments that cannot be properly cleaned and thus are very costly to manufacture and maintain. The aim of the study is to develop a novel affordable, sustainable, cableless, and fully steerable laparoscopic grasper, and to test its ease of assemb

A time study of physicians' work in a German university eye hospital to estimate unit costs.

BACKGROUND: Technical efficiency of hospital services is debated since performance has been heterogeneous. Staff time represents the main resource in patient care and its inappropriate allocation has been identified as a key factor of inefficiency. The aim of this study was to analyse the utilisation of physicians' work time stratified by staff groups, tasks and places of work. A further aim was to use these data to estimate resource use per unit of output. METHODS: A self-reporting work-sampling study was carried during 14-days at a University Eye Hospital. Staff costs of physicians per unit

Sensory subtraction in robot-assisted surgery: fingertip skin deformation feedback to ensure safety and improve transparency in bimanual haptic interaction.

This study presents a novel approach to force feedback in robot-assisted surgery. It consists of substituting haptic stimuli, composed of a kinesthetic component and a skin deformation, with cutaneous stimuli only. The force generated can then be thought as a subtraction between the complete haptic interaction, cutaneous, and kinesthetic, and the kinesthetic part of it. For this reason, we refer to this approach as sensory subtraction. Sensory subtraction aims at outperforming other nonkinesthetic feedback techniques in teleoperation (e.g., sensory substitution) while guaranteeing the stabilit

Dyslexic adults can learn from repeated stimulus presentation but have difficulties in excluding external noise.

We examined whether the characteristic impairments of dyslexia are due to a deficit in excluding external noise or a deficit in taking advantage of repeated stimulus presentation. We compared non-impaired adults and adults with poor reading performance on a visual letter detection task that varied two aspects: the presence or absence of background visual noise, and a small or large stimulus set. There was no interaction between group and stimulus set size, indicating that the poor readers took advantage of repeated stimulus presentation as well as the non-impaired readers. The poor readers had

What brain science tells us about how to excel.

Millions of people are struggling at work. Some are in the wrong jobs. Others feel no connection to their colleagues or engagement with their. The result is rampant dissatisfaction and underachievement. Hallowell, a child psychiatrist specializing in learning differences, describes the Cycle of Excellence, a plan for helping people achieve peak performance. It consists of five steps: Select a job that reflects what you like to do and what you do best and that adds value to the organization. Research has shown that good job fit reduces stress and increases satisfaction and performance. Connect

Influence of gender on pacing adopted by elite triathletes during a competition.

The aim of this study was to compare the pacing strategies adopted by women and men during a World Cup ITU triathlon. Twelve elite triathletes (6 females, 6 males) competed in a World Cup Olympic distance competition where speed and heart rate (HR) were measured in the three events. The power output (PO) was recorded in cycling to determine the time spent in five intensity zones ([0-10% VT1]; [10% VT1-VT1]; [VT1-VT2]; [VT2-MAP] and > or =MAP) [ventilatory threshold (VT); maximal aerobic power (MAP)]. Swimming and running speeds decreased similarly for both genders (P < 0.05) and HR values were

The evolutionary basis of thermoregulation and exercise performance.

The evolutionary history of mammals, but more specifically humans, indicates that heat stress was a decisive and powerful selection pressure. There is good evidence that early hominids had to adapt to a changing environment by assuming an upright posture and consequently bipedalism. Because of further distances between food sources and the need for prolonged hunting, bipedal locomotion over longer distances required higher aerobic capacities and as a consequence an increase in endogenous heat production. A cooling mechanism to balance heat loads was essential for survival and adaptations by ot

Effect of exercise-induced muscle damage on endurance running performance in humans.

Exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) is known to decrease muscle strength and power but its effect on endurance performance is unclear. Thirty moderately trained adult runners (24 men and six women) were randomly assigned to EIMD or control. The EIMD group jumped 100 times from a 35 cm bench, while controls did not perform any muscle-damaging exercise. Before and 48 h after treatment, subjects were tested on markers of EIMD, steady-state cardiorespiratory, metabolic and perceptual responses during a constant speed submaximal run; distance ran in 30 min on a treadmill. There were significant c

The influence of external ankle braces on subjective and objective parameters of performance in a sports-related agility course.

With lateral ankle sprains being the most frequent sports-related injury, there is an evident demand for the preventive measures in active individuals with chronic ankle instability. Braces are commonly used for prevention and treatment of ankle injuries. Various investigations-mostly performed with healthy subjects-focused on this problem, yet they often compared only a few models or used only limited testing procedures. However, controversy exists whether braces affect sports performance. The purpose of the present study was to compare the effects of ten different ankle braces-one rigid, fiv
