Proceedings of the 2015 ASPEN Research Workshop-Taste Signaling.

This article summarizes research findings from 6 experts in the field of taste and feeding that were presented at the 2015 American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Research Workshop. The theme was focused on the interaction of taste signals with those of a postingestive origin and how this contributes to regulation of food intake through both physiological and learning processes. Gastric bypass results in exceptional loss of fat mass and increases in circulating levels of key gut peptides, some of which are also expressed along with their cognate receptors in taste buds. Changes i

The tongue map and the spatial modulation of taste perception.

There is undoubtedly a spatial component to our experience of gustatory stimulus qualities such as sweet, bitter, salty, sour, and umami, however its importance is currently unknown. Taste thresholds have been shown to differ at different locations within the oral cavity where gustatory receptors are found. However, the relationship between the stimulation of particular taste receptors and the subjective spatially-localized experience of taste qualities is uncertain. Although the existence of the so-called 'tongue map' has long been discredited, the psychophysical evidence clearly demonstrates

The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor paroxetine does not alter consummatory concentration-dependent licking of prototypical taste stimuli by rats.

Serotonin and the 5HT(1A) receptor are expressed in a subset of taste receptor cells, and the 5HT(3) receptor is expressed on afferent fibers innervating taste buds. Exogenous administration of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, paroxetine, has been shown to increase taste sensitivity to stimuli described by humans as sweet and bitter. Serotonergic agonists also decrease food and fluid intake, and it is possible that modulations of serotonin may alter taste-based hedonic responsiveness; alternatively, or in combination, serotonin may interact with physiological state to impact ingesti

The structure and function of taste G protein-coupled receptors and their implications in diseases.

Taste G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), including sweet (TAS1Rs) and bitter (TAS2Rs) taste receptors, are essential for detecting nutrients and avoiding toxins, influencing dietary behavior, metabolism, and overall health. Beyond their role in taste perception, these receptors are widely expressed in extra-gustatory tissues, including the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems, where they regulate innate immune responses, hormone secretion, and energy balance. Dysfunctions or polymorphisms in TAS1Rs and TAS2Rs have been linked to various diseases such as asthma, type 2 diabetes, obesity,

Long-Term Dysfunction of Taste Papillae in SARS-CoV-2.

BACKGROUND: We sought to determine whether ongoing taste disturbance in the postacute sequelae of coronavirus disease 2019 period is associated with persistent virus in primary taste tissue. METHODS: We performed fungiform papillae biopsies on 16 patients who reported taste disturbance lasting more than 6 weeks after molecularly determined severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Then, on multiple occasions, we rebiopsied 10 of those patients who still had taste complaints for at least 6 months postinfection. Fungiform papillae obtained from other patients befor

Comparative Investigation of the Morphological Structure of the Tongue in Lambs and Rams: A Macroscopic, Morphometric Light and Scanning Electron Microscopic Study.

The tongue, which has a unique mucosal structure, undertakes the task of taking food in living things, turning it into morsels, and transmitting it to the oesophagus. This study aimed to investigate the development of tongue papillae in young (lamb) and adult (ram) Hamdani sheep (Ovis aries) by comparing light and electron microscopic features and morphometric characteristics. Tongue tissues of 7 crossbred Hamdani lambs aged 4-6 months and 7 rams aged 1-2 years were used in the study. Tongues were evaluated macroscopically and morphometrically, and light microscopic and scanning electron micro

Channel-mediated ATP release in the nervous system.

ATP is well established as a transmitter and modulator in the peripheral and central nervous system. While conventional exocytotic release of ATP at synapses occurs, this transmitter is unusual in also being released into the extracellular space via large-pored plasma membrane channels. This review considers the channels that are known to be permeable to ATP and some of the functions of channel-mediated ATP release. While the possibility of ATP release via channels mediating volume transmission has been known for some time, localised ATP release via channels at specialised synapses made by tas

A morphological investigation of the tongue of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus Linnaeus, 1758).

The morphological structure of the tongue and papillae that occur on it vary according to an animal's lifestyle, nutrition, and adaptation to various environmental conditions. This study aimed to reveal in detail the morphological, histological, and electron microscopic structure of the tongue of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus Linnaeus, 1758). In this study, nine roe tongues were used. The tongue consists of three parts: the apex, body, and root. When the dorsal surface of the tongue was examined in detail, five different papillae were observed: filiform, lenticular, conical, fungiform, and val

Morphological study of the lingual papillae in the fruit bat (Rousettus amplexicaudatus) by scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy.

This study was carried on the tongues of ten normal, healthy and adult fruit bats (Rousettus amplexicaudatus, also known as the nyap biasa bat) in Yogyakarta, Java Island, Indonesia. The tongue was protrusible, elongated and flat with a rounded apex, and its width and thickness increased gradually towards to lingual root. There were two main types of lingual papillae, mechanical (filiform) and gustatory (fungiform and circumvallate). The tongue was divided into three parts (apex, corpus and radix), and then, each part was subdivided into three regions (two lateral regions and a median region).

Deciphering Taste Disorders: Mechanistic Insights and Nonclinical Evaluation.

Drug-induced taste dysfunctions are an underrecognized yet clinically significant class of adverse effects that can substantially impair patients' quality of life and compromise adherence to therapeutic regimens. Despite the potential for many pharmacologic agents to alter taste perception, these effects are frequently overlooked in both clinical practice and drug development. Gustatory disorders are rarely assessed in toxicology studies, and current knowledge regarding the pathophysiology of dysgeusia, the relevant organ systems involved, and nonclinical evaluation methods remains limited. A search for the cortical gustatory area in the hamster.

The gustatory area was searched in the cerebral cortex of the hamster by means of a combined approach using electrophysiological, behavioral, and histological experiments. The chorda tympani (CT), which innervates taste buds on the anterior part of the tongue, projected to a confined area anterior to the middle cerebral artery and just dorsal to the rhinal fissure. The trigeminal component of the lingual nerve (LN) area was located anterodorsal to the CT area, and the glossopharyngeal nerve (GN), which innervates taste buds on the posterior part of the tongue, was posterior to the CT area. Symptomatic subgemmal neurogenous plaque in patients with COVID-19: Is there an association?

BACKGROUND: Subgemmal neurogenous plaques (SNP) are composed of neural structures found in the posterolateral portion of the tongue, rarely biopsied as most of them are asymptomatic or eventually only clinically managed. We aimed to investigate a case series of possible correlation of symptomatic subgemmal neurogenous plaque (SNP) with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHODS: Eleven formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded cases from patients with previous confirmed COVID-19 (by RT-PCR) were retrieved from two pathology files. Histological sections were morphologically studied, and then submitte

Morphological tongue and palate characterizations in Trachemys adiutrix (Vanzolini, 1995) turtles.

Morphological studies on the oropharyngeal cavity of turtles are an interesting tool in understanding evolutionary processes associated with feeding habits. There is paucity of morphological information on the oropharyngeal cavity of the Trachemys adiutrix turtle. Thus, the aim of this study was to describe the tongue and palate morphology of T. adiutrix to establish a standard model for the species, providing information that may improve knowledge on the species feeding habits. Gross dissection, light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy assessments of 11 specimens were carried out. Th

Comparative anatomical studies on the cranial nerves of the fully formed embryos of the Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (Ostiechthyes-Cichlidae). I. Nervus glossopharyngeus.

The organization of the roots, ganglia and the peripheral distribution of the cranial nerves of the fully formed embryos of Oreochromis niloticus are examined in the transverse serial sections. These nerves carry fibers, which were also analyzed. The results of this study demonstrated that the glossopharyngeal nerve originates by means of only one root, which leaves the cranium through the glossopharyngeal foramen. This nerve gives fibers (visceromotor) to the first internal and external levator arcus branchialis muscles. There is a single epibranchial (petrosal) ganglion located extracraniall
