Effect of taurine supplementation on plasma homocysteine levels of the middle-aged Korean women.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of taurine supplementation on plasma homocysteine (Hcy) levels, an independent risk factor of cardiovascular disease. The subjects consisted of 22 healthy middle-aged women (33 to 54 years). Serum lipids, plasma taurine and plasma Hcy levels were measured before and after supplying 3 g taurine per day for 4 weeks. The concentration of plasma taurine was significantly increased from 63.7 +/- 14.2 micromol/L to 73.8 +/- 16.6 micromol/L after taurine supplementation (p < 0.001). On the other hand, the concentration of plasma Hcy was significant

Changes in taurine as an indicator of hepatic dysfunction and biochemical perturbations. Studies in vivo and in vitro.

We have shown that urinary taurine level may be used as a biomarker of pathological and biochemical lesions. Detection of changes in the urinary concentration of this low molecular weight metabolite indicates biochemical lesions which may also be associated with pathological damage. Hepatotoxic compounds such as CCl4, galactosamine and thioacetamide that cause hepatic necrosis and compounds such as hydrazine and ethionine that cause fatty liver all result in elevated urinary taurine levels in rats. However compounds which do not cause liver damage, such as cycloheximide, also raise urinary tau

Stimulatory effects of taurine on insulin secretion by fetal rat islets cultured in vitro.

Islets of rat fetuses born to mothers fed a low protein diet (LP) have a depressed insulin secretion in vitro in response to secretagogues. These fetuses have lower plasma levels of taurine than controls. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of taurine on fetal islets insulin secretion. After 5 days of culture in serum containing standard RPMI medium, islets were cultured for 2 days in serum-free DME/F12 medium with 8.2 or 16.7 mM glucose alone or with taurine at 0.3 or 3 mM. They were then incubated for 120 min in Krebs Ringer solution with glucose alone (5.6 or 16.7 mM) or glucose

Chemopreventive effects of taurine on diethylnitrosamine and phenobarbital-induced hepatocarcinogenesis in male F344 rats.

Modifying effects of taurine, a naturally occurring organosulfur compound, on diethylnitrosamine (DEN) and phenobarbital (PB)-induced hepatocarcinogenesis were examined in rats. Male F344 rats, 5 weeks old, were divided into 8 groups. Rats of groups 1 through 5 were given i.p. injections of DEN (100 mg/kg body weight) once a week for 3 weeks from one week after the start of the experiment. Of them, animals of group 2 received taurine mixed in a basal diet at a concentration of 2000 ppm for the initial 4 weeks, and those of groups 3 and 5 were given the agent starting 4 weeks after the beginnin

Nuclear microanalysis of the effect of magnesium and taurine on the ionic distribution in the human amniotic membrane.

The effect of the addition of MgCl(2) and of taurine on the concentration and distribution of ions, present in physiological fluid, in epithelial (EL) and compact (CL) layers of the human amniotic membrane has been investigated using the Bordeaux nuclear microprobe. Particle induced X-ray emission and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry techniques had been used to provide quantitative measurements. In physiological medium (Hanks' solution), the monovalent ions (Na+, K+, Cl-) concentrations were identical in both layers. This data indicates that the compact layer acts as a buffer which fix m

Developmental and gestational changes of phosphoethanolamine and taurine in rat brain, striated and smooth muscle.

Concentrations of taurine and phosphoethanolamine in rat smooth (intestinal and uterine), skeletal and cardiac muscle, and brain have been determined, using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), to examine possible interrelationships in their tissue content. Concentrations were determined in fetal and neonatal samples, as well as in adult tissue, to investigate whether phosphoethanolamine and taurine levels are influenced by developmental state. The effect of gestational state was also studied. A marked decrease in cerebral phosphoethanolamine concentration during development was foun

Cloning and expression of a cDNA encoding the transporter of taurine and beta-alanine in mouse brain.

A taurine/beta-alanine transporter was cloned from a mouse brain cDNA library by screening with a partial cDNA probe of the glycine transporter at low stringency. The deduced amino acid sequence predicts 590 amino acids with typical characteristics of the sodium-dependent neurotransmitter transporters such as sequence homology and membrane topography. However, the calculated isoelectric point of the taurine/beta-alanine transporter is more acidic (pI = 5.98) than those (pI > 8.0) of other cloned neurotransmitter transporters. Xenopus oocytes injected with cRNA of the cloned transporter express

Taurine lowers blood pressure in the spontaneously hypertensive rat by a catecholamine independent mechanism.

Taurine, a sulfur aminoacid, has been studied for a role in blood pressure regulation since it functions as a generalized inhibitory neurotransmitter and is found in high concentrations in the myocardium. We reinvestigated the magnitude of the hypotensive effect of chronic taurine administration to the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) and the role of catecholamines in such an action. The SHR received either a 1% taurine solution or tap water to drink for 16 weeks. Taurine treatment caused a significant persistent reduction in blood pressure by 4 weeks that was maximal at 16 weeks (146 +/-

Evidence for an hereditary defect in taurine transport in the ciliary epithelium of an inbred strain of rabbits.

The concentration of taurine in the aqueous humour and serum of 21 rabbits with hereditary buphthalmia (Bu rabbits-genotype bu/bu) was compared with the aqueous and serum taurine levels of eight strain-related normal rabbits (JAX) and nine non-strain-related normal rabbits (MCV). There was a significant difference in the mean aqueous taurine concentration in each of the three groups. The Bu rabbits had only 29% of the MCV rabbits' level while the JAX rabbits were intermediate with 56% of the MCV level. It is suggested that some of the JAX rabbits may be heterozygous and the Bu rabbits homozygo

Protective Effects of Taurine Against Zearalenone-Induced Quality Impairment During Porcine Oocyte Maturation.

Zearalenone (ZEN) is a common non-steroidal estrogenic mycotoxin that exists widely in contaminated feeds, and its toxicities target multiple organs, especially the reproductive system, since ZEN is shown to affect oocyte quality. In the present study, we reported that taurine (TAU), a sulfur-containing amino acid that exhibits antioxidant properties, protected the maturation quality of ZEN-exposed porcine oocytes. We showed that TAU significantly reversed the cumulus cell expansion and polar body extrusion defects of porcine oocytes under ZEN treatment. The rescue effect of TAU was attributed

Exogenous tryptophan and taurine enhance phenolic metabolism and antioxidant defenses in walnut kernels.

Amino acids are key signaling molecules in plant stress responses. Fresh walnuts are rich in nutrients but face significant nutrient loss, enzymatic browning, and a decline in antioxidant capacity during postharvest storage. This study evaluated exogenous tryptophan and taurine in quality maintenance of fresh intact walnut (Juglans regia L. cv. 'Niangqing'), focusing on antioxidant capacity and phenolic compounds accumulation. Exogenous tryptophan and taurine were applied individually or in combination, effectively maintaining walnut appearance, delaying browning, and extending the shelf life.

Taurine ameliorates burn sepsis-induced intestinal injury by restoring NLRP3/NLRP6 inflammasome homeostasis.

Burn injuries trigger severe systemic complications such as sepsis, which is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Intestinal-barrier dysfunction plays a pivotal role in sepsis progression by promoting microbial translocation and systemic inflammation. However, the mechanisms underlying burn sepsis-induced intestinal injury remain largely unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of burn sepsis on intestinal-barrier integrity, NLRP3 and NLRP6 inflammasome homeostasis, and taurine levels, and evaluated the regulatory effect of taurine on intestinal barrier function and inflammasom

Nuclear receptor Nr1d1 links sleep deprivation to intestinal homeostasis via microbiota-derived taurine.

BACKGROUND: Sleep deficiency significantly compromises human health, with the gut being particularly susceptible. However, the molecular mechanisms by which gut microbiota mediate sleep deprivation-induced intestinal dysfunction remain largely undefined. In this study, we employed a chronic sleep deprivation (CSD) mouse model to investigate the impact of sleep loss on intestinal integrity and microbial composition. METHODS: The CSD mouse model was established using the modified multiple platform (rotating rod) method. Colon histomorphology was assessed by hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining.

Taurine can restrict MtdsRNA mediated pyroptosis by enhancing mitophagy in nucleus pulposus cells.

Mitochondrial double-stranded RNA (mtdsRNA), a long-stranded RNA molecule generated by bidirectional transcription of the circular mitochondrial genome, can trigger the type 1 interferon response by activating pattern recognition receptors in the cytoplasm during mitochondrial dysfunction. However, its regulatory and pathogenic mechanisms in intervertebral disc degeneration are poorly understood. Here, we showed that mtdsRNA was abnormally elevated in degenerative nucleus pulposus tissues. Furthermore, we found that mtdsRNA leakage into the cytoplasm could cause MAVS oligomerization by binding

Exogenous taurine administration abates reproductive dysfunction in male rats exposed to silver nanoparticles.

The broad contemporary applications of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been associated with various toxicities including reproductive toxicity. Taurine is well acknowledged for its potent pharmacological role in numerous disease models and chemically-mediated toxicity. We investigated the effect of taurine on AgNPs-induced reproductive toxicity in male rats. The animals were intraperitoneally injected with AgNPs (200 μg/kg) alone or co-administered with taurine at 50 and 100 mg/kg for 21 successive days. Exogenous taurine administration significantly abated AgNPs-induced oxidative injury by

Taurine protects against cardiac dysfunction induced by pressure overload through SIRT1-p53 activation.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) is an epidemic disease with increased incidence annually. It has been reported that taurine can improve cardiac function. This study investigated the cardioprotective effects of taurine in pressure-loaded HF mice and elucidated the possible mechanism. METHODS: HF models were established by transverse aortic constriction (TAC). Animals were treated with either taurine for 9 weeks and/or the SIRT1 inhibitor EX527 (5 mg/kg/day, every 2days) after TAC operation. Cardiac function and geometry were revealed by echocardiography. Myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis were

Systemic taurine treatment provides neuroprotection against retinal photoreceptor degeneration and visual function impairments.

OBJECTIVE: Retinitis pigmentosa causes progressive photoreceptor degeneration in the subjects while no clinical therapy exists. The present study sought to evaluate the potential protective effects of taurine on a pharmacologically induced RP animal model. METHODS: Photoreceptor degeneration in mice was induced by an intraperitoneal injection of N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU). The MNU-administrated mouse received taurine treatment and then they were examined by electroretinography, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography, optokinetic test, and histological and immunohistochemistry assay.

Taurine regulates mucosal barrier function to alleviate lipopolysaccharide-induced duodenal inflammation in chicken.

The objective of the study was to investigate how taurine alleviates mucosal injury. Young chickens were fed with taurine for 1 week and then challenged with lipopolysaccharide. We found that, under lipopolysaccharide challenge, taurine could attenuate diarrhea and mucosal inflammation. Additionally, under LPS challenge, taurine could enhance epithelial proliferation and goblet cell function, could also decrease epithelial apoptosis by improving the mitochondrial membrane permeability. The high-performance liquid chromatography assay showed that taurine feeding could elevate taurine concentrat
