This work was originally undertaken to determine the effective conditions of essential oils against Trichophyton mentagrophytes in vitro for the treatment of tinea pedis in a foot bath. Agar blocks implanted with T. mentagrophytes were immersed in 0.1% aqueous agar containing two-fold dilutions of essential oils with or without sodium chloride at 27 degrees C, 37 degrees C and 42 degrees C for 10 and 20 min. The number of surviving mycelia on the agar blocks was determined from the standard curves of the colony diameter and original inocula of the conidia. At the same time, the thermal effect

INTRODUCTION: Onychomycosis is notoriously difficult to treat. While oral antifungals are the most efficacious treatment for onychomycosis, they are contraindicated in certain patient populations, and patients may desire lower risk and accessible alternatives to systemic agents. In this study, we examine the clinical evidence supporting the use of complementary and alternative therapies in the treatment of onychomycosis.
METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched for clinical trials, observational studies, and case reports/case series, examining the efficacy of a complementar

Some evidence has demonstrated that Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, etiologic agent of "white spot disease", causes severe bioenergetics dysfunction in the spleen of naturally infected silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen), which contributes directly to disease pathogenesis. Recently, several studies have demonstrated the efficacy of Melaleuca alternifolia essential oil, popularly known as tea tree oil (TTO), in the treatment of freshwater fish naturally or experimentally infected with I. multifiliis. In this sense, the aim of this study was to evaluate whether TTO is capable of preventing or reducing

BACKGROUND: The threat posed by drug-resistant pathogens has resulted in the increasing momentum in research and development for effective alternative medications. The antioxidant and antibacterial properties of phytochemical extracts makes them attractive alternative complementary medicines. Therefore, this study evaluated the phytochemical constituents of Melaleuca cajuputi flower and leaf (GF and GL, respectively) extracts and their antioxidant and antibacterial activities.
METHODS: Radical scavenging capacity of the extracts was estimated using 2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and Fe(2+)-che

Lactococcosis, caused by Lactococcus garvieae, is a persistent problem of farmed rainbow trout, and the reduced efficacy of conventional antibiotics has prompted interest in plant-derived alternatives. The in vitro antibacterial activity of five commercial essential oils from Melaleuca alternifolia, Mentha piperita, Citrus limon, Rosmarinus officinalis and Lavandula hybrida was evaluated against six L. garvieae isolates from rainbow trout. Minimum inhibitory and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MIC and MBC) were determined by broth microdilution, and the mode of action was defined by the M

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that has been associated with mastitis in dairy animals, including goats. Often, the environmental sources of the bacteria are water-related (such as hoses and muddy pastures). Mastitis attributable to P. aeruginosa was identified in 2 goats in a small herd. Efforts were made to identify environmental sources of the pathogen. Multiple samples from the goats' environment were cultured, including water from the trough, bedding, the hose used to wash udders, and the teat dip and teat dip containers. The bacterium was isolated from the teat dip a

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) may impact the development of prostate cancer (PCa) by altering the steroid metabolism. Although their exact mechanism of action in controlling tumor growth is not known, EDCs may inhibit steroidogenic enzymes such as CYP17A1 or CYP19A1 which are involved in the production of androgens or estrogens. High levels of circulating androgens are linked to PCa in men and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) in women. Essential oils or their metabolites, like lavender oil and tea tree oil, have been reported to act as potential EDCs and contribute towards sex steroid

OBJECTIVES: Despite being a commensal of human skin, Cutibacterium acnes plays an important role in the pathogenesis of Acne vulgaris, with the loss of bacterial phylotype diversity being related to disease progression. This study evaluated differences in the virulence profile of C. acnes strains from different phylotypes and investigated the possible phylotype-selective efficacy of essential oils (EOs) from Thymus x citriodorus (TC), Thymus mastichina, and Cistus ladanifer compared to Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree), focusing on both planktonic and biofilm growth forms, the latter being rel

BACKGROUND: Acne is a chronic skin disease characterised by inflamed spots and blackheads on the face, neck, back, and chest. Cysts and scarring can also occur, especially in more severe disease. People with acne often turn to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, and dietary modifications, because of their concerns about the adverse effects of conventional medicines. However, evidence for CAM therapies has not been systematically assessed.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects and safety of any complementary therapies in people with acne vulgaris.

Fungal deterioration is a recurring problem in citrus fruits, and the search for natural preservatives has been widely publicised. Therefore, the in vitro antifungal activity of clove, white thyme, tea tree, Eucalyptus citriodora, Eucalyptus staigeriana, green mandarin, sicilian lemon, sweet orange, and bergamot essential oils (EO's) was evaluated against the mycelial growth of Penicillium digitatum isolated from contaminated citrus fruits, by direct contact and volatiles action. In addition, the chemical composition and volatile compounds of the EO's were evaluated by gas chromatography. Clov

Psoriasis is a multifunctional autoimmune skin disease with inflammatory and vascular changes. Recent developments show potential for herbal therapies and novel drug delivery systems. A chronic inflammatory skin illness, psoriasis affects 2-5 % of the world's population. It usually manifests itself among individuals of various ages. Redness, swelling, and itching are the hallmarks of psoriasis. Activation of T cells, release of cytokines, abnormal keratinocyte proliferation, altered local vascular structure, neutrophil activation, and inflammation all contribute to psoriasis. The epidermis, de
