What is your diagnosis? Blood smear from an injured red-tailed hawk.

An injured juvenile red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) was evaluated at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at the University of California, Davis. The hawk was quiet, alert, and emaciated, and had a closed comminuted, mid-diaphyseal ulnar fracture. CBC results included heterophilia with a left shift, monocytosis, and increased plasma fibrinogen concentration. The blood smear included rare heterophils containing small, dark blue inclusions approximately 1-2 mum in diameter that ranged from round to coccobacillary in shape and formed variably shaped aggregates; the morphology of the inclu

The role of SVS volunteer vascular surgeons in the care of combat casualties: results from Landstuhl, Germany.

With a shortage of active duty vascular surgeons in the military, Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) members have been called upon to perform short-term rotations at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC), the US military's receiving facility for combat injuries sustained in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. From September 2007 to May 2008, 20 SVS vascular surgeons have performed 2-week rotations at LRMC through American Red Cross and US Army sponsorship. Volunteers were surveyed for previous military and/or trauma experience. In addition to reporting number and types of procedures perform

Improving staff awareness of sensory aid needs and dementia status in an old age ward.

BACKGROUND: Having initially done our critical appraisal of various studies, we found that geriatric wards have a higher prevalence of delirium and dementia. Among this older population, sensory aids were found to be important in orientating delirious patients, and deficits in vision/hearing were associated with an increased risk of delirium. Delirium and dementia are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. This quality improvement project aimed to increase staff awareness of patient sensory aid needs and thus improve patient care as a result. METHODS: We started off with a driver

The STRIDOR mnemonic as a learning aid for post-operative ward care of head and neck cancer patients: a pilot randomized educational intervention trial.

BACKGROUND: Post-operative care of head and neck cancer (HNC) patients is complex, posing significant learning demands on junior trainees. Mnemonics are widely used as learning aids in medical education. We hypothesized that a specialized mnemonic would be beneficial for HNC ward round (WR) education. METHODS: The 'STRIDOR' mnemonic was developed after a literature review and a Delphi process with an expert panel of HNC surgeons. A pilot randomized educational intervention blinded trial was conducted. Recruited medical students were randomized into two groups: Group 1 (n = 10) received an edu
