[Development and the developmental disorders of human brain. I. Early development of the cerebrum].

The recent discovery of many genes that regulate brain development is revolutionizing our knowledge of neuroembryology and, moreover, our understanding of how gene defects cause human birth defects. The first 8 weeks of the development of the cerebrum can be subdivided into 23 stages, with early development of mostly the spinal cord and the brain stem. Regionalization of the brain has been related to genes that play a part in it. A characteristic developmental disorder for this early phase in the development of the forebrain is holoprosencephaly, a brain patterning disorder. Numerous genes pla

"Wrong-way eyes" in supratentorial hemorrhage.

A patient developed conjugate horizontal eye deviation to the side opposite a large frontal-perisylvian hemorrhage from a ruptured aneurysm. Autopsy examination confirmed the hemispheric locus of the hemorrhage and failed to disclose any lesion of the brainstem or thalamus to explain the "wrong-way" eye deviation.

Forebrain in human anencephaly.

Gross and microscopic study of twelve human anencephalics revealed existence of the forebrain with variable growth in all specimens, meaning thereby closure of the neural tube at its cephalic extremity. This is supported by the findings of choroid plexus, pineal tissue and rudimentary pallium within the anterosuperior margin of a median dorsal opening situated behind the forebrain mass. The opening bears an intimate relation to the undue dorsal convexity of the sphenooccipital junction, and leads cranially to a cavity representing the third and lateral ventricles. This opening is situated in t

Investigation of a cyclopic, human, term fetus by use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the internal neural and craniofacial malformations of a cyclopic fetus are described. External facial features were characterized by a tubular proboscis situated above a single eye slit. The brain was recognized as 'pancake' type alobar holoprosencephaly (a condition where the undifferentiated telencephalon partially surrounds a monoventricle). Displacement of some bones that normally contribute to the orbit could be clearly discerned. Absence of neural structures (e.g. falx cerebri, corpus callosum) and missing components of the ethmoid bone indicated a

Olfactory sensory axons expressing a dominant-negative semaphorin receptor enter the CNS early and overshoot their target.

Sensory axons extend from the chick olfactory epithelium to the telencephalon well before the maturation of their target, the olfactory bulb. During a waiting period of several days, olfactory axons arrive and accumulate outside the CNS while the bulb differentiates beneath them. Semephorin-3A is expressed in the tel-encephalon during this period and has been proposed to prevent their entry into the CNS. We show that the misexpression of a dominant-negative neuropilin-1 that blocks SEMA-3A-mediated signaling in olfactory sensory axons induces many of them to enter the tel-encephalon prematurel

Perinatal pathology of interhemispheric cyst with thinned posterior corpus callosum: four cases.

This paper presents four posterior, interhemispheric cerebral cysts found at perinatal autopsy. All cysts appeared to attenuate the overlying posterior corpus callosum. All had a base over the roof of the third ventricle and midbrain with a lining that resembled tela choroidea with the choroid plexus tufts projecting into the lumen of the cyst. Three cases had enlargement of the lateral ventricles. One case had complete communication between the cyst and the posterior lateral ventricles reminiscent of a holoprosencephaly confined to the posterior telencephalon. One case demonstrated a complete

Embryonic and neonatal development of the vomeronasal and olfactory systems in garter snakes (Thamnophis spp.).

Newborn, unfed garter snakes (Thamnophis spp.) respond preferentially to aqueous extracts of natural prey items, and these responses are mediated by the vomeronasal system (VNS). Since the VNS, and possibly the olfactory system (OS), are functional at birth, we examined the ontogeny of VNS and OS structures in four embryonic stages and two postnatal ages in garter snakes. The results of this study show 1) significant changes in thickness of the receptor epithelia for both systems; 2) temporal differences in the innervation of the telencephalon for each system; and 3) concurrent development of

High substance P-like immunoreactivity (SPLI) in the olfactory and electrosensory cells of gymnotid fish.

Substance P has been proposed as a candidate neurotransmitter or neuromodulator in the nociceptive system. Using a light microscopial immunohistochemical peroxidase-anti-peroxidase technique we have detected high substance P-like immunoreactivity (SPLI) in several types of sensory organs of 4 species of gymnotiform teleost fish: olfactory epithelium, vestibular, lateral line and electrosensory organs. The olfactory nerve and its endings within the olfactory bulb and the telencephalon were also strongly labelled. At these sites no SPLI was revealed in other teleosts (Carassius auratus, Gnathone

Forebrain Control of Behaviorally Driven Social Orienting in Zebrafish.

Deficits in social engagement are diagnostic of multiple neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism and schizophrenia [1]. Genetically tractable animal models like zebrafish (Danio rerio) could provide valuable insight into developmental factors underlying these social impairments, but this approach is predicated on the ability to accurately and reliably quantify subtle behavioral changes. Similarly, characterizing local molecular and morphological phenotypes requires knowledge of the neuroanatomical correlates of social behavior. We leveraged behavioral and genetic tools in zebrafish to b

Evolution of cognitive and neural solutions enabling numerosity judgements: lessons from primates and corvids.

Brains that are capable of representing numerosity, the number of items in a set, have arisen repeatedly and independently in different animal taxa. This review compares the cognitive and physiological mechanisms found in a nonhuman primate, the rhesus macaque, and a corvid songbird, the carrion crow, in order to elucidate the evolutionary adaptations underlying numerical competence. Monkeys and corvids are known for their advanced cognitive competence, despite them both having independently and distinctly evolved endbrains that resulted from a long history of parallel evolution. In both speci

[MR scanning of cerebrum in the investigation of delayed development in children. Syntelencephaly--is it really so rare?].

A 14-month-old boy presented with a mild global developmental delay, plagiocephaly, and a mild mid-face dysmorphology, including hypertelorism. At 24 months of age, early signs of a spastic diplegic cerebral palsy were noted. MRI of the brain showed middle interhemispheric fusion: syntelencephaly.

Thoughts on the development, structure and evolution of the mammalian and avian telencephalic pallium.

Various lines of evidence suggest that the development and evolution of the mammalian isocortex cannot be easily explained without an understanding of correlative changes in surrounding areas of the telencephalic pallium and subpallium. These are close neighbours in a common morphogenetic field and are postulated as sources of some cortical neuron types (and even of whole cortical areas). There is equal need to explain relevant developmental evolutionary changes in the dorsal thalamus, the major source of afferent inputs to the telencephalon (to both the pallium and subpallium). The mammalian

A volumetric comparison of brains between greylag geese (Anser anser L.) and domestic geese.

Volumes of brain and brain subdivisions in greylag and domestic geese are determined by cytoarchitectonical methods in order to confirm the reduction in brain weight of 16.13% due to domestication which was described in an earlier study. Olfactory structures, nucleus basalis and the 'piriform' corticoid layer are found to be particular different in shape and position compared to other birds, especially the pigeon. The volumes of brain parts in relation to the total brain are very similar in both: greylag geese and domestic geese. The extent of changes in brain parts due to domestication varies

Allometric Brain Development and Neuroecological Adaptations in Juvenile and Adult Raja polystigma.

INTRODUCTION: Chondrichthyans represent some of the earliest diverging lineages of jawed vertebrates, making them key models for studying the evolution of vertebrate brains. Despite their evolutionary significance, Mediterranean species remain understudied. This research focuses on the speckled skate (Raja polystigma), an endemic Mediterranean benthic species with distinct life history traits, such as bathymetric segregation and postnatal shifts in diet. These traits provide a unique opportunity to explore how ecological factors influence postnatal brain development and neuroecological adaptat

NMDA receptor antagonist induced c-Fos expression in the medial entorhinal cortex during postnatal development.

N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) antagonists, including ketamine, phencyclidine (PCP), and dizocilpine (MK-801), are an important class of drugs that can produce antidepressant, hallucinogenic, dissociative, psychotomimetic, and anesthetic effects in humans and animal models. To understand the effects of NMDAR antagonists on the brain, it is essential to map their actions at cellular resolution. We quantified c-Fos expressing cells in the mouse telencephalon after systemic injection of the potent NMDAR antagonist MK-801 and found a 10-fold higher density of c-Fos in the medial entorhinal

Organization of GnRH and FMRF-amide systems in two primitive bony fishes (order polypteriformes).

To investigate the evolution of the neural organization of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), we have examined GnRH-immunoreactivity in two brachiopterygian fishes (Polypterus palmas and Calamoichthys calabaricus). Distal regions of the terminal nerve (TN) within the medial olfactory nerve contained clusters of GnRH-immunoreactive (ir) perikarya (< 10 microns). More proximal, isolated GnRH-ir neurons were present among TN fascicles as they penetrated the ventral forebrain, and a few ir neurons were observed accompanying GnRH-ir fibers in the rostromedial telencephalon. GnRH-ir neurons were

3D reconstruction of the cardiovascular and central nervous system of a human embryo Carnegie-stage 15--case report.

A human embryo at Carnegie stage 15 was serially sectioned and 3D computer aided reconstructions were made to demonstrate the cardiovascular system and cranial structures and to study developmental variations at this stage. The development of the heart and pharyngeal arteries was according to the existing literature. Differences were found in the development of the arterial circle of Willis and the central nervous system. The cranial venous system seemed to show great variability. Whereas the telencephalon was not developed according to the stage, the development of the hypophysis had occurred

[Extra-bulbar primary olfactory projection in teleost fishes].

Immunohistochemical investigations with anti-substance P antiserum demonstrate the existence of an extensive extrabulbar primary olfactory projection in several gymnotid teleost fish. This projection, never described before, originates in particular primary olfactory bundles which enter with the olfactory nerve into the olfactory bulb. While the bulk of the olfactory fibers end with glomeruli in the glomerular layer of the olfactory bulb, two particular bundles penetrate into the telencephalon and end, without forming glomeruli, in several telencephalic and diencephalic regions. A few fibers r

Thiamine deficiency: selective impairment of the cerebellar serotonergic system.

To explore the role of thiamine deficiency in synaptic transmission, the high-affinity uptake and release systems for putative neurotransmitters were studied in synaptosomal preparations isolated from the telencephalon, hypothalamus, and cerebellum of rats made thiamine deficient by diet or pyrithiamine. There was significant decrease in the uptake of serotonin by the synaptosomal preparations of the cerebellum. Although thiamine and its phosphorylated forms added in vitro did not restore the decreased serotonin uptake, the administration of the vitamin in vivo resulted in a significant revers
