Screening of some medicinal plants used in south-west Nigerian traditional medicine for anti-Salmonella typhi activity.

Ten Nigerian medicinal plants used traditionally for the treatment of several ailments of both microbial and non-microbial origins were tested on multi-drug resistant S. typhi (MDR) strains of which six of them were active. The results revealed that both the aqueous and ethanol extracts of Terminalia avicennioides, Momordica balsamina, Combretum paniculatum and Trema guineensis were effective on the MDR-S. typhi strains with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values ranging from 9.60 to 14 mcg/ml and 24 to 33 mcg/ml, respectively. Whereas, only

Green-synthesized LaOCl/ZnO heterojunction for efficient photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange.

A novel LaOCl/ZnO photocatalyst was synthesized via a Terminalia catappa-assisted coprecipitation route for methyl orange (MO) degradation under simulated sunlight. The leaf extract acted as a green structure-directing medium that promoted nucleation, stabilization, particle dispersion, and composite formation. XRD, EDS, TEM mapping, and XPS confirmed the coexistence of crystalline ZnO and LaOCl with Zn, O, La, and Cl distributed in the composite. The optimal material was obtained at a La/Zn molar ratio of 20% and 500 °C calcination. SEM/TEM observations showed aggregated nanoscale particles w

Host breadth and parasitoids of fruit flies (Anastrepha spp.) (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Puerto Rico.

Twenty fruit species representing 12 families were collected from various regions in western Puerto Rico and monitored for the emergence of Anastrepha spp. pupae. We collected 14,154 tephritid pupae from 16 fruit species representing 10 families. The relative infestations of these fruits (pupae per kilogram of fruit) were recorded. Recorded host ranges were not in complete agreement with those reported in the literature. This host-use pattern should give pause to regulators of fruit importation and exportation that base their decisions on literature from regions other than those of immediate i

Morphological redescription of Simulium takahasii (Rubtsov), the first species of the subgenus Wilhelmia Enderlein (Diptera: Simuliidae) recognized in East Asia.

Simulium takahasii (Rubtsov), which was originally described from Japan, and recorded from Korea and China, is the first among the 19 species of the subgenus Wilhelmia Enderlein recorded from East Asia. It is striking in mating, blood-feeding and ovipositing in captivity and in experimentally transmitting Dirofilaria immitis (Leidy) and Brugia pahangi (Buckley & Edeson), and it is a severe biter of cattle and horses, rarely of humans. Nevertheless, updated information about its morphological characteristics was lacking, making comparisons with related species described from China difficult, si

Drosophila male genitalia rotation depends on permissive remodeling of the posterior abdomen.

BACKGROUND: One of the most characteristic morphogenetic processes in Drosophila is the 360° rotation of the male pupal genital disc. This movement is driven by the myosin Myo1D, whose expression in the genital disc is controlled by the Hox gene Abdominal-B (Abd-B). The rotation takes place in contact and relative to the posterior abdomen, yet the contribution of abdominal tissues has remained unclear. RESULTS: Here we show that normal genital disc circumrotation requires active remodeling of posterior abdominal larval epidermal cells that contact the rotating terminalia. Preventing apoptosis

Nootropic and Anti-Alzheimer's Actions of Medicinal Plants: Molecular Insight into Therapeutic Potential to Alleviate Alzheimer's Neuropathology.

Medicinal plants are the backbone of modern medicine. In recent times, there is a great urge to discover nootropic medicinal plants to reverse cognitive dysfunction owing to their less adverse effects. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an age-related neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the inevitable loss of cognitive function, memory and language impairment, and behavioral disturbances, which turn into gradually more severe. Alzheimer's has no current cure, but symptomatic treatments are available and research continues. The number of patients suffering from AD continues to rise and today,

Identification of novel natural inhibitor for NorM - a multidrug and toxic compound extrusion transporter - an insilico molecular modeling and simulation studies.

The emergence of bacterial multidrug resistance is an increasing problem in treatment of infectious diseases. An important cause for the multidrug resistance of bacteria is the expression of multidrug efflux transporters. The multidrug and toxic compound extrusion (MATE) transporters are most recently recognized as unique efflux system for extrusion of antimicrobials and therapeutic drugs due to energy stored in either Na+ or H+ electrochemical gradient. In the present study, high throughput virtual screening of natural compound collections against NorM - a MATE transporter from Neisseria gono

Inhibitory effect of TCCE on CCl4-induced overexpression of IL-6 in acute liver injury.

Terminalia catappa L. leaves have been shown to protect against acute liver injury produced by some hepatotoxicants, but the active components and mechanisms are not clear. This study was designed to characterize the protective effects of the chloroform fraction of the ethanol extract of T. catappa leaves (TCCE) against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced hepatotoxicity in mice, and analyze the changes in expression level of interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the process. It was found that TCCE pretreatment (10 or 30 mg/kg, ig) protected mice from CCl4 toxicity, as evidenced by the reversed alterations i

Screening for lead compounds and herbal extracts with potential anti-influenza viral activity.

Nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) of the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (H5N1) contains a conserved RNA binding domain (RBD) that inhibits antiviral functions of host-innate immune response. Dimerization of NS1 forms a central groove and binds to double stranded (ds) RNA. This region might serve as a potential drug target. In this study, three dimensional structure model of NS1 RBD protein was constructed and virtual screening was performed to identify lead compounds that bound within and around the central groove. The virtual screening showed that 5 compounds bound within the central gro
