The utility of short message service (SMS) texts to remind patients at higher risk of STIs and HIV to reattend for testing: a controlled before and after study.

BACKGROUND: Patients attending for sexually transmitted infection (STI)/HIV testing may be at continuing risk of infection and advised to return for retesting at a later date. OBJECTIVES: To measure the impact of short message service (SMS) text reminders on the reattendance rates of patients who require repeat STI testing. METHODS: Reattendance rates were measured for two groups of higher risk patients: those listed for routine SMS text reminders in 2012 and a control group of patients from 2011 with the same risk profile who had not received any active recall. Reattendance was counted if i

An incentive-based text-messaging intervention to reduce maternal alcohol use during pregnancy and lactation in South Africa (MaRISA study): Findings from a single-arm pilot study.

BACKGROUND: South Africa has the highest rate of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) globally. As with alcohol use during pregnancy, alcohol consumption while breastfeeding adversely impacts infant development. We pilot tested an incentive-based text-messaging intervention to reduce alcohol use during pregnancy and lactation in South Africa. METHODS: A single-arm pilot trial was conducted over 3 months in healthcare facilities in Cape Town, South Africa. Pregnant and breastfeeding participants tested positive for recent alcohol use by urinalysis. The three-month intervention had two compo

A text message intervention to support women's physical and mental health after breast cancer treatments (EMPOWER-SMS): a randomised controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women worldwide. In developed countries, 80-90% of women will survive five years after diagnosis but the transition from hospital-based care to health self-management and self-efficacy can be difficult. Text messaging programs offer a simple and proven way to provide support to people with chronic diseases. This study aims to test the effectiveness of a text message support program at improving women's health self-efficacy, and physical and mental health outcomes after breast cancer treatments compared to usual care at 6-months a

Treating young adult generalized anxiety disorder with text-message delivered cognitive behavioral therapy: A randomized clinical trial testing efficacy and clinical mechanisms.

Approximately one in five (19.5 %) young adults have experienced generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in the past year. Compared with other age groups, they are least likely to receive mental health treatment despite reporting greater need for these services. To address these issues, we conducted a randomized clinical trial with 102 young adults using an 8-week, automated text-message delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT-txt-A) to treat GAD. We examined treatment engagement, tested treatment efficacy, and tested 3 clinical mechanisms of change. Participants were from 33 states, recruited
