A BENCHTOP PLATFORM FOR EVALUATING SEPTOSTOMY IN AORTIC DISSECTION.

Aortic dissection is a major aortic catastrophe associated with significant morbidity and mortality. While Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR) is the standard treatment for chronic type B aortic dissection cases, a persistent fibrotic septum often prevents complete false lumen exclusion, leading to continued pressurization and treatment failure. Endovascular septostomy is increasingly explored as an adjunctive therapy to modify this septum and promote aortic remodeling. However, current techniques carry risks such as embolic debris generation, thermal injury, and unpredictable tearing,

Lanthanide-Centered Polyoxoalkoxide Complexes Provide a Platform for Systematic Room- and Variable-Temperature Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Studies.

A single, high-yielding approach was employed to synthesize the complete series of lanthanide (Ln) containing polyoxoalkoxide sandwich-type complexes (TBA)3[M{Mo5O13(OMe)4NO}2] (M = La-Lu, except Pm). The complexes were characterized by solution-state 1H/17O NMR spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and electronic absorption spectroscopy, while the new derivatives (M = Tm, Yb, Lu, and Y) were also characterized using single crystal X-ray diffraction experiments. Compared to similar [Ln(W5O18)2]9- or [Ln(PW11O39)2]11- series, the presence of large noncoordinating tetrabutylam

The impedance mismatch theory: A non-equilibrium thermodynamic framework for a shared energetic stress pathway in neurodegeneration.

Current neurobiological models of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and Huntington's Disease (HD) utilize multi-omic interactome analyses to map cascades of proteinopathy. While essential, these approaches often overlook the macroscopic thermodynamic limits of the neural substrate as an information processing system. We propose the Impedance Mismatch Theory, a theoretical biophysical model and quantitative framework for the thermodynamic limits of neural computation, positing that these distinct pathologies converge as a shared energetic stress pathway. We introduce

Trident: Three-dimensional ray tracing for modeling high intensity focused ultrasound ablation.

The lack of magnetic resonance (MR)-based thermometry in fat and bone poses significant challenges for temperature control in high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablation treatment. This paper introduces Trident, a ray tracing method to calculate the spatial heat production during HIFU, handling both longitudinal and shear waves in isotropic solids. Trident is especially advantageous for setups with complex geometries where other numerical methods prove computationally prohibitive. It outperforms current state-of-the-art ray tracing techniques by being at least 20 times faster without sac

Composition Control in Molecular Cluster-Aggregates: A Toolbox for Optical Output Tunability via Energy Transfer Pathways.

Composition control is a powerful tool for obtaining high-performance lanthanide (Ln) luminescent materials with adjustable optical outputs. This strategy is well-established for hierarchically structured nanoparticles, but it is rarely applied to molecular compounds due to the limited number of metal centers within a single unit. In this work, we present a series of molecular cluster-aggregates (MCAs) with an icosanuclear core {Ln2Eu2Tb16} (Ln = Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb) in which we explore composition control, akin to nanoparticles, to modulate the optical output. Hyperthermia alone in the treatment of recurrences of malignant tumors. Experience with 60 lesions.

Localized hyperthermia alone has been used for the treatment of cancer recurrences in which previous conventional therapies have failed. Since 1983 and 1988, 57 patients with 60 lesions have been heated by means of a microwave and radiofrequency system. Treatment protocol provided 45 minutes of heating at the intratumor temperature of at least 42 degrees C, twice a week, for a total number of six, eight, or ten heating sessions. Invasive intratumor thermometry was performed for all lesions. Complete response (CR) was obtained in ten cases (16.6%) and partial response (PR) in 14 (23.4%). Higher

Closing the Loop: High-Precision 3D Photofabrication in Living Tissues.

Multiphoton absorption enables three-dimensional fabrication of photoresists ranging from ceramics to hydrogels and has recently been extended to the writing of microstructures within the dermis, muscle, and brain of living animals. However, an intrinsic difficulty prevents its widespread application in vivo. Absorption, cure kinetics, heat accumulation, and matrix stiffness each vary steeply across neighboring micro-environments and across intervals spanning a single pulse to several minutes. Therefore, any pre-selected exposure drifts out of the safe and effective window as fabrication proce

Infrared Thermography for Temperature Measurement in Adult Female C57BL/6NCrl Mice: A Comparison with Rectal Probe and Subcutaneous Transponder.

Body temperature is an easily measured clinical parameter that provides important information about an animal's health and welfare. In the context of animal experiments, temperature monitoring provides relevant data needed to manage animal care and has been embraced as a means of assessing humane endpoints. At the same time, temperature measurement in the sense of the 3Rs (Replacement, Refinement, and Reduction) should not cause any additional pain or distress to the animals. Therefore, the use of noninvasive, accurate, and cost-effective methods for temperature monitoring is of great importan

Autonomous animal heating and cooling system for temperature-regulated MR experiments.

Temperature is a hallmark parameter influencing almost all magnetic resonance properties (e.g., T\textsubscript{1}, T\textsubscript{2}, proton density, diffusion and more). In the pre-clinical setting, temperature has a large influence on animal physiology (e.g., respiration rate, heart rate, metabolism, cellular stress, and more) and needs to be carefully regulated, especially when the animal is under anesthesia and thermoregulation is disrupted. We present an open-source heating and cooling system capable of stabilizing the temperature of the animal. The system was designed using Peltier mod

Comparison of Temporal Artery and Rectal Temperature Measurement During Cooling and Rewarming in Neonates Treated for Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy.

BACKGROUND: Finding an accurate and simple method of thermometry in the neonatal intensive care unit is important. The temporal artery thermometer (TAT) has been recommended for all ages by the manufacturer; however, there is insufficient evidence for the use of TAT in infants, especially to detect hypothermia. PURPOSE: To assess the accuracy of the TAT in hypothermic neonates in comparison to a rectal thermometer. METHODS: This study was a naturalistic, quantitative, and observational study. Temporal artery temperatures (using Exergen TemporalScanner 5000) were compared to rectal temperatur

How fever is defined in COVID-19 publications: a disturbing lack of precision.

OBJECTIVES: Fever is the single most frequently reported manifestation of COVID-19 and is a critical element of screening persons for COVID-19. The meaning of "fever" varies depending on the cutoff temperature used, the type of thermometer, the time of the day, the site of measurements, and the person's gender and race. The absence of a universally accepted definition for fever has been especially problematic during the current COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This investigation determined the extent to which fever is defined in COVID-19 publications, with special attention to those associated wit

Symmetry-Controlled Thermal Activation in Pyramidal Coulomb Clusters: Testing Kramers-Langer Theory.

Laser-cooled ions confined in electromagnetic traps provide a unique, tunable mesoscopic system where the interplay of the trapping potential, nonlinear Coulomb interactions, and laser-ion scattering generates rich, collective dynamics. In this work, we engineer thermally activated switching between two oppositely oriented, square-pyramidal configurations of five laser-cooled ions in a Paul trap. For identical ions (^{40}Ca^{+}), the inversions proceed via a Berry pseudorotation mechanism with a low activation barrier, enabled by the permutation symmetry, in contrast to the umbrella inversion

Unveiling Anisotropic in-Plane Thermal Conductivity and Thermal Expansion Coefficient in Low-Symmetry Few-Layer ReS2.

ReS2 belongs to a unique class of 2D materials with low structural symmetry and extremely weak interlayer bonding, which give rise to intriguing thermal properties, like in-plane anisotropic thermal conductivity (ATC) and anisotropic thermal expansion coefficient (ATEC). This study provides experimental evidence of in-plane ATC and ATEC in few-layer ReS2, revealed through simultaneous two-mode Raman thermometry. In a single optical configuration, ATC of ReS2 has been determined by simultaneous analysis of two anisotropic Raman modes (III and V) corresponding to in-plane crystallographic axes.

iThermonitor: A wearable non-invasive high-precision alternative to traditional temperature monitoring in thoracoscopic surgery of lateral decubitus position.

In thoracoscopic surgery, temperature monitoring is essential but traditionally relies on invasive methods such as esophageal or rectal thermometry, which risk mucosal injury and patient discomfort. This trial evaluates the iThermonitor, a wireless wearable axillary thermometer, as a non-invasive alternative aiming to minimize procedural trauma while maintaining clinical accuracy. We enrolled 80 adult patients scheduled for thoracoscopic surgery under general anesthesia between December 1, 2023, to May 31, 2024. Luminescence Thermochromism of a Noncluster Copper Iodide Complex.

Hybrid copper(I) halide materials are currently attracting significant attention due to their exceptional luminescence properties, offering great potential for the development of multifunctional emissive materials with, in addition, eco-friendly features. A binuclear copper iodide complex, based on the [Cu2I2L4] motif with phosphite derivatives as ligands, has been synthesized and structurally characterized. Photophysical investigations indicate that this complex displays luminescence thermochromic properties, which are characterized by a temperature-dependent change in the relative intensity
