Pet ownership increases human risk of encountering ticks.

We examined whether pet ownership increased the risk for tick encounters and tickborne disease among residents of three Lyme disease-endemic states as a nested cohort within a randomized controlled trial. Information about pet ownership, use of tick control for pets, property characteristics, tick encounters and human tickborne disease were captured through surveys, and associations were assessed using univariate and multivariable analyses. Pet-owning households had 1.83 times the risk (95% CI = 1.53, 2.20) of finding ticks crawling on and 1.49 times the risk (95% CI = 1.20, 1.84) of finding t

Neurologic, neuropsychologic, and electroencephalographic findings after European tick-borne encephalitis in children.

Tick-borne European early summer meningoencephalitis is believed to be a benign disease in childhood. The causative RNA virus is from the same family as the West Nile virus, and the respective clinical presentations have many similarities. We studied 19 German children who had suffered from tick-borne encephalitis virus meningitis or meningoencephalitis in an endemic area and compared them with 19 matched controls. Epidemiologic data were consistent with known features of tick-borne encephalitis infection in southern Germany. None of the children studied had severe neurologic or neuropsycholog

High protective efficacy of a recombinant Fer2 vaccine against Dermacentor marginatus infestations.

Dermacentor marginatus is an important disease vector in China, yet current control methods remain heavily reliant on chemical acaricides. This study evaluated the vaccine potential of Ferritin 2 from D. marginatus (DmFer2). The DmFer2 gene was cloned, expressed as a recombinant DmFer2 (rDmFer2) in a prokaryotic expression system, and subsequently used to immunize rabbits. Immunization elicited high anti-rDmFer2 antibody titers, which peaked at a detectable maximum of 1:25,600 on day 35, and significantly reduced tick fecundity and altered tick feeding kinetics in challenge trials. Preliminary studies on the effect of Anaplasma marginale antibodies ingested by Dermacentor andersoni ticks (Acari:Ixodidae) with their blood meal on infections in salivary glands.

The effect of Anaplasma marginale antibodies ingested with the tick blood meal was tested on infected male ticks that were allowed to feed on cattle immunized with the erythrocytic stage of A. marginale. The experiments were done in two trials. Trial 1 was done using splenectomized calves (two calves per treated and control groups) while ticks in trial 2 were fed on intact yearling cattle (four cattle per treated and control groups). The cattle were immunized with purified outer membrane proteins of erythrocyte-derived A. marginale using saponin (trial 1) or monophosphoryl lipid-A-trehalose di

Susceptibility of Rhipicephalus microplus to fluralaner: assessment before and after implementation of a strategic control protocol in taurine cattle in a tropical region.

BACKGROUND: Fluralaner has been used in the strategic control of the Rhipicephalus microplus tick, an important ectoparasite for cattle farming. However, the effects of its application on the susceptibility profiles of these tick populations after treatment have not yet been investigated. In this study, we evaluated the effect of a strategic control protocol with fluralaner on the phenotypic susceptibility profile of a population of R. microplus before and after its implementation. METHODS: Thirty naturally infested cattle were divided into two experimental groups: T01 (control group): cattle

A reappraisal of vector control strategies for babesiosis.

This review suggests that we are on the threshold of a new epoch in the control of ticks and the diseases transmitted by them. Ecological studies of parasitic and non-parasitic stages of the tick life cycle have shown how strategic dipping can lead to effective control of Boophilus ticks. However, this approach can lead to drastic reduction in tick populations which may favour the development of enzootic instability. On the other hand, mathematical models and field studies indicate that we can eradicate babesiosis without eradicating the tick vector. As no well-established vaccine exists for b

Rhipicephalus microplus: An overview of vaccine antigens against the cattle tick.

Rhipicephalus microplus, popularly known as the cattle tick, is the most important tick of livestock as it is responsible for significant economic losses. The use of chemical acaricides is still the most widely used control method despite its known disadvantages. Vaccination would be a safe alternative for the control of R. microplus and holds advantages over the use of chemical acaricides as it is environmental-friendly and leaves no residues in meat or milk. Two vaccines based on the Bm86 protein were commercialized, TickGARD® and Gavac®, with varying reported efficacies in different countri

Potential impact of wildlife on the tropical bont tick eradication program in the Caribbean.

Wildlife are hosts for A. variegatum throughout its range in Africa, and have been demonstrated to serve as hosts for larvae and nymphs on several islands in the Caribbean. Studies conducted in the Caribbean have indicated that most larvae and nymphs and all adults of the tick feed on livestock; therefore, eradication can be approached through the treatment of livestock. However, since small numbers of animals such as the mongoose are infested with larvae and nymphs, these animals may represent a short-term alternative host system. Such infestations potentially could result in a presence of sm

[The occurrence of Babesia divergens in the Freiburg i. Br. district and piroplasmosis prevention trials in cattle].

The occurrence of Babesia divergens in the Freiburg i. Br. district is reported. By interviewing farmers and by serological investigations, three valleys where located in which bovine piroplasmosis occurs since many years. Main objective of this study was to strategically control the vector ticks, Ixodes ricinus with the synthetic pyrethroid flumethrin, in order to prevent clinical piroplasmosis after turnout to pastures in spring, without interfering with protective immunity against Babesia divergens. A total of 200 cattle were used for trials in the period 1990-92. Three pour-on treatments o

Stage- and host-dependent microbiome remodeling and reciprocal changes between Haemaphysalis longicornis and host skin.

Ticks harbor diverse microbial communities that are crucial for their biology and capacity to transmit pathogens. Although interactions between tick and host skin microbiomes are likely to play critical roles in feeding and pathogen transmission, these reciprocal changes during tick-host interactions remain largely unexplored. Here, we used 16S rRNA-seq to investigate how blood feeding by Haemaphysalis longicornis (larvae, nymphs, and adults) influences both the tick microbiome and the host skin microbiome. We further characterized microbial distribution across major tick tissues. Results reve

Vaccine efficacy of recombinant BmVDAC on Rhipicephalus microplus fed on Babesia bigemina-infected and uninfected cattle.

Rhipicephalus microplus is the most widely distributed tick worldwide and causes significant economic losses in the livestock industry. It directly affects hosts (especially in large infestations) by feeding on blood and piercing the skin and indirectly affects hosts as a vector of pathogens that cause infectious diseases, such as bovine babesiosis. Current research on the control of ticks is focused on integrated tick control programmes, including vaccination treatment with acaricides and completely blocking pathogen transmission. Our previous studies showed that R. microplus VDAC (BmVDAC) ex

Molecular screening of cattle ticks, tick-borne pathogens and amitraz resistance in ticks of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas province in Ecuador.

The province of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas in Ecuador is a strategic place for cattle production and trade. The lack of knowledge about tick species, tick control and tick-borne diseases in Ecuador prompted this study with the goal of identifying the cattle-tick species and tick-borne agents present in the area and molecularly determining the potential acaricide resistance to amitraz of the major cattle tick species. Eighty-four cattle farms were visited and in 88 % of them, cattle were infested with ticks. Additionally, 24 historical samples from other surrounding Ecuadorian provinces, we

Host Immunization with Recombinant Tick Antigen and Evaluation of Host Immune Response.

Ticks are classified as hematophagous arthropods and transfer a variety of pathogens-such as viruses, bacteria, and protozoans-to vertebrate hosts during blood feeding. These transmitted pathogens cause infectious diseases that continue to affect both humans and animals worldwide. Chemical acaricides are commonly used for tick control to prevent infectious diseases. However, the continuous use of acaricides leads to the emergence of acaricide-resistant tick species; thus, alternative methods for tick control are necessary. Vaccination of vertebrate hosts with tick-derived molecules is consider

Emerging Tick-Borne Diseases.

Increases in tick-borne disease prevalence and transmission are important public health issues. Efforts to control these emerging diseases are frustrated by the struggle to control tick populations and to detect and treat infections caused by the pathogens that they transmit. This review covers tick-borne infectious diseases of nonrickettsial bacterial, parasitic, and viral origins. While tick surveillance and tracking inform our understanding of the importance of the spread and ecology of ticks and help identify areas of risk for disease transmission, the vectors are not the focus of this doc

Projecting the potential distribution of ticks in China under climate and land use change.

Ticks are known as vectors of several pathogens causing various human and animal diseases including Lyme borreliosis, tick-borne encephalitis, and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever. While China is known to have more than 100 tick species well distributed over the country, our knowledge on the likely distribution of ticks in the future remains very limited, which hinders the prevention and control of the risk of tick-borne diseases. In this study, we selected four representative tick species which have different regional distribution foci in mainland China. i.e., Dermacentor marginatus, Dermacent

Lesser protein degradation machinery correlates with higher BM86 tick vaccine efficacy in Rhipicephalus annulatus when compared to Rhipicephalus microplus.

Infestations with cattle ticks, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus and Rhipicephalus annulatus, economically impact cattle production in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Vaccines containing the recombinant R. microplus BM86 gut antigen were developed and commercialized to induce an immunological protection in cattle against tick infestations. These vaccines demonstrated that tick control by vaccination is cost-effective, reduces environmental contamination and prevents the selection of drug resistant ticks that result from repeated acaricide applications. The protection elicited

Emerging tick-borne pathogens of public health importance: a mini-review.

Ticks are the most important vectors of human pathogens, leading to increased public health burdens worldwide. Tick-borne pathogens include viruses (e.g. tick-borne encephalitis and Powassan); bacteria, such as the causative agents of Lyme disease, spotted fever rickettsiosis and human anaplasmosis; and malaria-like protozoan parasites causing babesiosis. Tick-borne diseases are emerging due to the geographical expansion of their tick vectors, especially in the northern hemisphere. Two examples of this phenomenon are Ixodes scapularis and Amblyomma americanum, which have expanded their ranges
