Respiratory volume perception through the nose and mouth determined noninvasively.

The relative importance of the nose vs. the mouth in the perception of respiratory volumes has never been assessed, nor have previous respiratory perception studies been performed noninvasively. Using respiratory inductive plethysmography, we monitored 12 normal subjects noninvasively when breathing either exclusively through the nose or mouth. The sensation of inspired volume mouth breathing was compared with that of nose breathing over a wide range of the inspiratory capacity. The psychophysical techniques of tidal volume duplication, tidal volume doubling, and magnitude estimation were util

The occurrence of increased intraperitoneal volume events in automated peritoneal dialysis in the US: role of programming, patient/user actions and ultrafiltration.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND, OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: Increased intraperitoneal volume (IIPV) can occur during automated peritoneal dialysis (APD). The contribution of factors such as cycler programming and patient/user actions to IIPV has not been previously explored. The relationship between IIPV and cycler programming, patient/user actions, and ultrafiltration over a two-year period was investigated using US data from Baxter cyclers. Drain/fill volume ratios of > 1.6 to ≤ 2.0 and > 2.0 were defined as Level I and Level II IIPV events, respectively. RESULTS: Level I IIPV events occurred in 2.39%

Impact of catheter size and endotracheal tube diameter on PEEP stability during closed suctioning in a simulated ARDS patient: a bench top study.

OBJECTIVES: Endotracheal suctioning is performed in mechanically ventilated patients to remove airway secretions. The American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) has provided recommendations on endotracheal suctioning techniques and catheter size selection over the years (1993, 2010, 2022). This bench-top study aimed to compare the effects of closed-suction system manoeuvres performed with different catheter diameters on PEEP and Tidal Volume in an experimental setup of mechanical ventilation in a simulated ARDS scenario. METHODS: A lung simulator was used to simulate severe ARDS in adul

Myocardial performance index during rapidly changing loading conditions: impact of different tidal ventilation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The myocardial performance index is a non-geometric, heart rate-independent echocardiography-derived index of left ventricular performance combining systolic and diastolic function. There is an ongoing debate whether the myocardial performance index is affected by preload or not. Moreover, a systematic evaluation of the effect of changing tidal volume ventilation on the myocardial performance index is still lacking. The aim of our study was to assess whether acute changes in preload and/or different depth of tidal volume ventilation affect the myocardial performance

Gas exchange dynamics in bottlenose dolphins around 2 min apneas conform to values for terrestrial mammals.

Cetaceans are often assumed to employ very high oxygen extractions of ∼40-60% and high tidal volumes (60-80% of vital capacity) to decrease surface time and increase foraging time at depth. However, such oxygen extractions and tidal volumes are greatly at odds with gas exchange in terrestrial mammals, and may, if incorrect, lead to severe overestimations of field metabolic rate (FMR) in wild animals when modeling oxygen uptake from respiration rates. Here, we tested the hypothesis that bottlenose dolphins have such high average oxygen extractions and tidal volumes. By measuring oxygen extracti

The effects on breathing of alternate breaths of air and a carbon dioxide rich gas mixture in anaesthetized cats.

1. An in vivo pH electrode was used to assess the effect in anaesthetized cats of the administration of 5% CO(2) (21% O(2), balance N(2)) and air as alternate inspirates upon the time course of the carotid arterial pH, and by inference, the P(CO2).2. This method of administration of CO(2) and air resulted in a lowering of the recorded pH with the production of oscillations of twice the duration seen on air alone. These larger oscillations had a period of two respiratory cycles and their amplitude was approximately twice that of normal oscillations.3. The respiratory response consisted in all c

State-Aware Contactless Respiratory Volume Monitoring for Breath-Hold-Guided Radiation Therapy.

PURPOSE: Respiratory motion increases setup uncertainty in thoracic and abdominal tumor radiation therapy and elevates dose exposure to organs at risk (OARs), such as the heart and lungs. Deep inspiration breath-hold (DIBH) can reduce OAR dose, but clinical deployment requires accurate, real-time, low-burden monitoring of breath-hold stability and tidal volume. This study proposes a contactless tidal volume-estimation system for DIBH-guided radiation therapy. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A depth camera captured 3-dimensional thoracoabdominal surface motion to construct a surface-based volumetric su

[Pulmonary stretch receptors activity during thermal polypnea (author's transl)].

1 We have studied the unit activity of 88 pulmonary stretch receptors (RPI) in the vagus nerve of the cat by using the single fibre technique. 2 In spite of a 38% decrease in tidal volume, the discharge frequency of RPI is statistically unchanged during polypnea, However, RPI are recruited earlier, but their discharge overlaps expiration. 3 Individual influences of tidal volume, temperature, and FACO2 on RPI activities are tested. During polypnea, the excitatory influences of hyperthermia and hypocapnia act against the depressing action of tidal volume reduction: RPI are still active. 4 During

Diaphragm length during tidal breathing in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Diaphragm function is compromised in severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by hyperinflation, but its ability to shorten and contribute to tidal volume is uncertain. We estimated coronal diaphragm length by measuring zone of apposition length with ultrasound and rib cage diameters with magnetometers, in 10 male patients with severe COPD and 10 age- and sex-matched control subjects. Diaphragm length was 20% shorter in patients at residual volume (413 and 536 mm in patients and control subjects, respectively) and FRC (381 and 456 mm, respectively), but was not different at total lu

Extraction and Analysis of Respiratory Motion Using a Comprehensive Wearable Health Monitoring System.

Respiratory activity is an important vital sign of life that can indicate health status. Diseases such as bronchitis, emphysema, pneumonia and coronavirus cause respiratory disorders that affect the respiratory systems. Typically, the diagnosis of these diseases is facilitated by pulmonary auscultation using a stethoscope. We present a new attempt to develop a lightweight, comprehensive wearable sensor system to monitor respiration using a multi-sensor approach. We employed new wearable sensor technology using a novel integration of acoustics and biopotentials to monitor various vital signs on

Prediction of prolonged ventilator dependence in preterm infants.

Volutrauma is an important factor in the pathogenesis of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Our aims were to identify risk factors in the first 24 h for prolonged ventilator dependence and assess volume delivery and carbon dioxide levels in infants with evolving BPD. A retrospective study was undertaken of 41 infants born at less than 32 weeks of gestational age (GA). A higher tidal volume, minute volume and resistance and a lower GA, birth weight and compliance were associated with a significantly higher risk of ventilator dependence at 28 days. The strongest relationships were with birth weig

The effect of nasal obstruction in infancy and early childhood upon ventilation.

To evaluate the effect of nasal obstruction in infants and young children upon ventilation during sleep, change of ventilation was followed by polygraphic recordings of esophageal pressure, tidal volume and percutaneous oxygen tension when the nostrils were mechanically obstructed in 10 subjects; 3 types of ventilatory changes were noted. In 4 subjects periodic breathing appeared in which hypoventilation was alternated with occasional hyperventilation. Esophageal pressure, tidal volume and PO2 showed concomittant fluctuation. PO2 lowered during hypoventilatory phase was compensated by periodic
