Time processing skills in individuals with math impairment and Developmental Dyscalculia.

In recent years the literature has investigated the relationships between time processing (TP) abilities and mathematical/numerical skills, considering a possible overlap in cognitive systems aimed at processing different types of magnitudes. In this framework, the description of TP deficits in individuals with Developmental Dyscalculia (DD), that is the aim of the present work, could offer both theoretical contribution and practical implications. Specifically, this review addresses three complementary aspects: 1) theoretical accounts of the potential association between time and number proces

Spatial metric in blindness: behavioural and cortical processing.

Visual modality dominates spatial perception and, in lack of vision, space representation might be altered. Here we review our work showing that blind individuals have a strong deficit when performing spatial bisection tasks (Gori et al., 2014). We also describe the neural correlates associated with this deficit, as blind individuals do not show the same ERP response mimicking the visual C1 reported in sighted people during spatial bisection (Campus et al., 2019). Interestingly, the deficit is not always evident in late blind individuals, and it is dependent on blindness duration. We report th

Crossmodal temporal order and processing acuity in developmentally dyslexic young adults.

We investigated crossmodal temporal performance in processing rapid sequential nonlinguistic events in developmentally dyslexic young adults (ages 20-36 years) and an age- and IQ-matched control group in audiotactile, visuotactile, and audiovisual combinations. Two methods were used for estimating 84% correct temporal acuity thresholds: temporal order judgment (TOJ) and temporal processing acuity (TPA). TPA requires phase difference detection: the judgment of simultaneity/nonsimultaneity of brief stimuli in two parallel, spatially separate triplets. The dyslexic readers' average temporal perfo

Spatiotemporal integration and object perception in infancy: perceiving unity versus form.

3 experiments investigated 5-month-old infants' perception of an object whose center was fully occluded and whose ends were visible only in succession. Infants perceived this object as one connected whole when the ends of the object underwent a common motion behind the occluder, but not when the ends were stationary. Although infants perceived the connectedness of the object, they did not appear to perceive the object's shape. These findings suggest (a) that young infants are capable of integrating information over time to perceive object unity but not object form, (b) that young infants perce

Detection of deficits in temporal pattern discrimination using the seashore rhythm test in young children with reading impairments.

A deficiency in temporal pattern discrimination frequently is a distinguishing characteristic of children with dyslexia or learning disabilities (LD). We studied the feasibility of using the Seashore Rhythm Test, a subtest of the Halstead-Reitan neurological assessment battery (Halstead, 1947), with young children to discriminate children with reading impairments from age-matched controls reading at a normal level, in an effort to develop tools to determine readiness to read in young school-age children. Major considerations in test selection were ease of administration and wide use and accept

Temporal segmentation and "look ahead" simulation: Physical events structure visual perception of intuitive physics.

How we perceive the physical world is not only organized in terms of objects, but also structured in time as sequences of events. This is especially evident in intuitive physics, with temporally bounded dynamics such as falling, occlusion, and bouncing demarcating the continuous flow of sensory inputs. While the spatial structure and attentional consequences of physical objects have been well-studied, much less is known about the temporal structure and attentional consequences of physical events in visual perception. Previous work has recognized physical events as units in the mind, and used p

Effect of trichloroethylene on spatiotemporal pattern of LTP in mouse hippocampal slices.

The effect of trichloroethylene (TCE) on long-term potentiation (LTP) was studied using both electrical and optical recording. The hippocampi from mice injected with 300 mg/kg or 1000 mg/kg TCE were sliced 24 h after administration. The field potential from the CAI was recorded. After the application of tetanus, population spikes (PS) were potentiated in all groups, but the post-per-pre ratio of PS was smaller in TCE groups than in the control. Optical recording was also carried out in 1000 mg/kg TCE-injected mice and a new analytical method using a high speed camera was employed. After the in

Human ocular vergence movements induced by changing size and disparity.

Human subjects viewed an electronically generated bright square. Horizontal movements of the two eyes were recorded with the scleral coil method. The dynamic properties of vergence movements induced by movement of the bright square were investigated for the following three kinds of stimulus motion: (a) both the size and the binocular disparity of the square changed together, in such a way as to exactly mimic the retinal image changes produced by a real object's motion in depth; (b) the changing-size component in (a) was present with no disparity component; (c) the changing-disparity component

Developmental trajectories of visual temporal integration and segregation in children with and without developmental dyslexia.

In the present study, 43 Italian school-age children (age range = 7-14 years, 16 females) with (N = 19) and without DD (N = 24) were presented with pairs of visual displays separated by varying interstimulus intervals and performed either a temporal integration or segregation task despite an identical visual input. Children with DD had lower accuracy and slower RTs for longer temporal intervals. Additionally, efficiency (combined accuracy and speed trade-off) increased as a function of age only in the DD group, most markedly for the integration condition. Results suggest that visual temporal p

Temporal processing in dyslexia.

The temporal processing capabilities of 15 children with dyslexia versus 15 age-matched and 15 reading-matched controls in a word identification task were examined. The hypothesis underlying the present experiment was that word recognition would be inferior in children with dyslexia, relative to controls, when the task demanded the temporal integration (sequencing) of two-syllable words. Such a hypothesis must predict that one-syllable word recognition does not distinguish between these two populations and that these effects cannot be accounted for in terms of eye movement differences. To test

Does the representation of time depend on the cerebellum? Effect of cerebellar stroke.

Behaviours that appear to depend on processing temporal information are frequently disrupted after cerebellar damage. The present study examined the role of the cerebellum in explicit timing and its relationship to other psychological processes. We hypothesized that if the cerebellum regulates timekeeping operations then cerebellar damage should disrupt the perception and the reproduction of intervals, since both are thought to be supported by a common timekeeper mechanism. Twenty-one patients with cerebellar damage from stroke and 30 normal controls performed time perception and time reproduc

Musical experience enhances time discrimination: Evidence from cortical responses.

Time discrimination, a critical aspect of auditory perception, is influenced by numerous factors. Previous research has suggested that musical experience can restructure the brain, thereby enhancing time discrimination. However, this phenomenon remains underexplored. In this study, we seek to elucidate the enhancing effect of musical experience on time discrimination, utilizing both behavioral and electroencephalogram methodologies. Additionally, we aim to explore, through brain connectivity analysis, the role of increased connectivity in brain regions associated with auditory perception as a

Sociodemographic correlates of perceived COVID-19 impact on movement behaviors in Croatian school-aged children.

BACKGROUND: Levels of physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior (SB), and sleep, as important determinants of children's health and weight status, may have been significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine factors associated with parental perception of COVID-19 negative impact in PA, SB, and sleep during the COVID-19 period, and whether the parental perception of COVID-19 negative impact was associated with actual post-lockdown behavioral levels among 2nd and 3rd grade elementary school students in Croatia. METHOD: Data was gathered on a nati

Comparative effectiveness of 12-week open- and closed-skill exercises on executive function in children with ADHD and developmental dyslexia: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and comorbid developmental dyslexia (ADHD + DD) demonstrate both core symptoms of ADHD and pronounced reading difficulties, which further compromise executive function (EF). This study compared the effects of open-versus closed-skill exercises (OSE vs. CSE) on EF in children with ADHD + DD. METHODS: Thirty children (6.9-8.5 years) with ADHD + DD were randomly assigned to OSE (n = 15) or CSE (n = 15) training, with 15 typically developing (TD) children receiving CSE. All completed 12-week, thrice-weekly, moderate-to-high intens

A stimulus-brain coupling analysis of regular and irregular rhythms in adults with dyslexia and controls.

When listening to temporally regular rhythms, most people are able to extract the beat. Evidence suggests that the neural mechanism underlying this ability is the phase alignment of endogenous oscillations to the external stimulus, allowing for the prediction of upcoming events (i.e., dynamic attending). Relatedly, individuals with dyslexia may have deficits in the entrainment of neural oscillations to external stimuli, especially at low frequencies. The current experiment investigated rhythmic processing in adults with dyslexia and matched controls. Regular and irregular rhythms were presente

Effects of age on psychophysical measures of auditory temporal processing and speech reception at low and high levels.

Age-related cochlear synaptopathy (CS) has been shown to occur in rodents with minimal noise exposure, and has been hypothesized to play a crucial role in age-related hearing declines in humans. It is not known to what extent age-related CS occurs in humans, and how it affects the coding of supra-threshold sounds and speech in noise. Because in rodents CS affects mainly low- and medium-spontaneous rate (L/M-SR) auditory-nerve fibers with rate-level functions covering medium-high levels, it should lead to greater deficits in the processing of sounds at high than at low stimulus levels. In this
